    I love the fact that there's companies out there whose sole purpose is to turn clumps of aluminum into foil, and here you are just reversing all their hard work

    My 5 year old daugther couldn't sleep, so we watched this together. When the ball was finished, she said 'he's very proud' which is cool, because she doesn't speak English, so she had no idea what you were saying, but your enthusiasm and face and showing of the ball made her say it. She probably has autism (just like her parents) and her expressing your emotion (which can be hard for people with autism, so we try to teach her as much as possible) made me very proud. She's now sleeping well, probably dreaming about a shiny ball lol.

    Being surprised that repeatedly swinging a 25-pound weight up and down, one designed for working out by repeatedly moving it up and down, would in fact be a workout, definitely had me chuckling.

    Many years ago as a teenager I got hired to help decorate the stage for a production of a play. It involved covering a huge amount of the set with tinfoil. I collected all the scraps into a firm ball about the size of a bushel basket and took it home. It got used as a stool for a long time, and tossed around. It started to shrink, and people started dropping it on the floor on purpose to shrink it further. Over a year or so, it gradually shrank to the size of a cantaloupe and took on a texture like Damascus steel. It was surprisingly heavy.

    This reminds me of the foil ball I made in the 90's when I smoked. I peeled the paper from the foil in cigarette packages and made a ball, then wrapped it up each time a pack was empty, often gathering more from others. I rubbed it on a hard surface to make it smooth and shiny, and it was a cool little ball. It didn't get more than an inch and a half across, and I soon after quit smoking, but it was fun to create that thing over the years.

    • @brettrace
      @brettrace 8 days ago

      I was about to post that we used to do this in 2002 but figured we probably didn't invent making balls from the cigarette foil. So it goes at least back to the 90s

    • @ironshoes1720
      @ironshoes1720 3 days ago +1

      @brettraceI started my aluminium ball in the 70.
      Never got far, but my cousin, who introduced me to the whole concept, made a pretty decent one (about 5 inches in diameter).
      Now I feel reeeeally old.

      @ironshoes1720, so we're back to at least the 70s.
      Now, the boring answer on when cigarette foil balls were "invented" is whenever cigarette companies started using foil wrapping, but the playful part of my mind wants to believe that these foil balls existed before then 🤨 😆

    A lot of people crunch up a small ball (golf ball size) of aluminum foil and throw it in their dryer instead of using a dryer sheet. The foil takes away static and is more environmentally friendly (totally reusable) and non allergenic. Funny by-product of putting a ball of foil in the dryer multiple times is that it compacts super tight, shiny, and perfectly round. With no effort.

      Does anyone have issue with static on their clothing? Dryer sheets are waxy which impart a scent onto the clothing.... Aluminium foil does neither of those things

    • @corekilla
      @corekilla 4 months ago

      @watchinyoutube8919yes, dry climates. Also pet hair sticks more with static, using one of the static reducing dryer methods helps to release pet hair and lint etc.

      The instructions were unclear

    • @FrancoisBZH277
      @FrancoisBZH277 9 months ago +8

      @itsConnorCreates Wet sanding allows the grit to turn into a paste and get progressively smaller as you sand giving a finer finish.
      Wet sanding is also used to reduce heat while sanding which would not be an issue in this case.
      Wet the sandpaper and base surface with water. Placing the sandpaper on a wet base surface will allow it to "stick" to the surface to allow for easier sanding.
      Loved the vid, just throwing out some helpful hints.

    Your next ball should be an alluminum ball, wrapped in multiple layers of multi-colored and natural clay, then encase it in a square block of clear resin, which you then cut, sand and polish into a ball. Mayhem.

    a couple of helpful tips - 1, try to compact the foil right from the start when balling it up, as in ball it up as tight as you can, not loosely, it'll make it easier to compress at the hammering stage. and 2, when nearing the end of the roll, try to leave a loose pocket/flap (don't squish as much near the very end) in which to tuck the very end of the foil into. like with origami, or whipping a handle with leather thong, it'll help stop the flappy end bit problem by tucking it in ... good luck and all the best to all who give this a try 🤗
