What’s the worst way you’ve ever ended a ride? 🫣
When I was a kid. I was cycling down a grassy hill, hit a rock, went over the handlebars and then my bike hit me on the back of the head knocking out a baby tooth. Still, the tooth fairy was generous that night. 😅
My ride ended today as a Alsatian decided to take a chunk out of my leg 😢
Crashing and puncturing a lung
@@mallymac9761 why not use chain guard?
Last December I went out in some wet conditions and literally 500m from my home I fell off my bike at slow speed and managed to fracture my hip, still rode home though
Imagine how Josh Tarling must have felt coming in OTL after riding 120km alone and getting told that Cam Wurf has gone for a run.
Hahahaha a real kick in the teeth 😂
@@gcn When does the UCI ban triathletes? You can break a young man with that?
It's (almost) disrespectful...
The worst ending to a ride that I ever had was when a pickup truck hit me from behind at highway speed. My next ride was in an ambulance to hospital where I learned that I had burst one of my vertebrae.
The best ride ever, was when i got on a borrowed bike four months later. Cycling never felt so good, even if I could only manage a few minutes.
Almost thirty years later I can ride centuries, but not a day goes by when I do not remember my worst ride.
Relatively new cyclist for the past 2.5 years. Worst ending to a ride this far was earlier this year. Had recently installed clipless pedals on my bike for the first time and completed my first ever 40 mile ride. Pulled into my driveway, came to a stop, had my bike leant the wrong direction from the side I was clipped out, and over I toppled. This of course was captured on our outdoor camera, much to the delight of my wife and her friends she sent the video to.
I returned to cycling in 2020 after being absent for 25 years after an RTC. Used to ride a womans Raleigh step through racer, now, due to a slip disc in T6-T7, I ride a TREK FX1 Stagger hybrid. Clipless terrify the life out of me. I'd love to try them as I have heard that they keep your feet in the correct position on the pedals. I'm petrified that I will never be able to click out in an emergency and at red lights and just keep falling. As long as your wife doesn't send the footage into "You've Been Framed" you should be ok! LOL!
Admittedly, I too have fallen over in my driveway. 😂 Fell into the flower bed, taking out a bird bath in the process. 😆
I did this other day on my new bike that had not a scratch last week at some traffic lights, it happens to the best of us
@@TheGreenhillsCyclist you need to try Shimano SPD pedals with M cleats. They are multi-release and can be set light enough that getting out is simple.
Hahahaha classic! We've all been there 😂

19:30 LOL I think I'd never laughed that much in any previous GCN show! Hank is such a charismatic & large-hearted individual! Great to watch him & Conor alternately taking the mickey and giving praise to one another! 😁
Glad you enjoyed the show! These two always bring the energy 🙌
I’ve never seen research on this, but have contended for more than 3 decades based on lots of miles racing mountain bikes, riding in fast road groups, and just noodling around: letting your guard down leads to more crashes. Seen it many times, done it more often than I prefer to admit, and, to bring in the other “controversy” to round this thought out: this is the reason I wear a helmet even when testing a repair or riding down the street. When we relax our focus we open ourselves up to errors. Hank and Coner both admitted it (Hank's crashing a car, but no doubt has done it on his bike), and it bears noting that wearing a helmet is for the same reason we wear a seatbelt: not because we crash every day, but because it's simple protection for when we do.
I was on a big hill climb(5k’) up a mountain pass on a mild spring day. I hadn’t previously done any riding at elevation and didn’t properly dress. Going up was fine but going down was horrendous and I was in severe pain and fearful of going hypothermic. I pulled off and was doing push-ups to warm up my core when none other than my mother came driving up the pass! I was never so glad to end a ride and hop in a warm car!
Mums always know best! 🙌
Hank "I've crashed on my driveway"
Yes but to be fair Hank, your driveway is 5 miles long 😂
I was in a Vets race once and all the prizes were well up the road when I was taken out by 2 guys sprinting (all over the road!) for umptyfirst place ! Loved that.
#CaptionContest: When you're taking a dad nap and the kids want to go to the park
That was a brilliant Caption Comment of the Week by Conor! I vote for his comment to be the winner next week.
he doesn't need any more freebies 😂
My friend had a work contract that took him to Queensland, Australia. The only way he could fit his riding in was to get up shockingly early (4am) and ride - usually in the dark. One morning just before daybreak he hit a wallaby. Broke only a finger and torqued up his wrist. Luckily it was a steel frame and only took a few scratches. But he went up and over. Wallaby hopped off into the darkness.
Love the vibes between hank and conor. So casual and fun. Hank’s laughs are contagious.
So glad to see the awkward turtle making a comeback in this episode
🐢
Caption competition. MVDP to Degenkolb ‘I just One-Two say I’m sorry’ 😂
Can't think where else to make this comment, but I just watched the Sean Kelly Legend film on GCN+. I've heard a lot of ex champions talk, from a wide range of fields including my own as a musician, but very few of them have the blend that Sean Kelly does - of pride in his achievements, genuine modesty to present the truth of opportunity and luck as well as the talent and hard work, and to maintain without any fakery a feeling of an ordinary man with an extraordinary career. I've enjoyed his commentary of course, and now I begin to know why he is such a great commentator - because of the integrity and insight. Great watch, worth the annual subscription.
He ran at 4:10/km pace as well which isn't even a jog 😢
Breakfast of champions: Milk jug hand warmers; bread bag socks....all great hacks. However, nothing gives you a greater safety buffer on the road than a cereal box helmet!
Hope you guys enjoyed riding our beautiful country Philippines..😊 there's a lot more beautiful places here for you to see..
Not sure when they did that ride, but it's really hot right now here in the Philippines and we're now getting 105 F heat index (>40 C). I regularly ride up long mountain climbs on my loaded tour bike (42 lbs) without stopping and our GCN heroes are significantly slower so I think they did not have enough time to adapt to the heat and should have stayed here longer like one month!👍👍👍
I just watched Connor and Marcel bikepacking. Genuinely brilliant. Well done GCN keep it coming
I hope that the GCN+ video shot in the Philippines would be a wake up call to people in our government to prioritize cycling infrastructure and safety because cycling is not only good for moving around and getting healthy but also a great way to promote tourism. Also, great video Connor and Marcel! Never thought I’d see Connor using a “tabo” (the dipper) to take a bath! 😅
Cycling in the PI is not safe the victory liners(buses) will run you off the road in a heart beat. Same as the jeepneys and trucks.
@@6ft8incyclist agree it is not safe. Hence why I said the government should prioritize cycling infrastructure and safety.
The distinct problem cycling around the Philippines, especially in and around big cities is the horrible smog and poorly maintained roads. Yes, there's plenty of motorists here who endanger cyclists but other countries also have this problem like USA, UK. The only countries in the world actually safe to ride are Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Spain?, and few other countries in Europe. It's not surprising these countries also produce the best cycling athletes in the world.
@@6ft8incyclist And also motorcycle riders. Many motorbikers ride like 8 year olds. Then don't look when changing lane, merging, and turning at intersections. They always seem to assume they can avoid collisions by maneuvering around traffic at full throttle. I live in full view of EDSA and see accidents almost everyday involving motorcycles almost every time!
Hilarious watch - I couldn’t help thinking had you run out of responsible adults? That debate about snake tails 😅 and milk bottles with zip ties a hack!? Si must be feeling lower than losing his KOM!
I feel like Si will never let us live that hack down 🤣
#CaptionCompetition: Van der Poel and Philipsen proving this year's Roubaix was 'hands down' one of the hardest fought editions.
I actually use a strip of Velcro to do the same thing-to,keep,the front wheel aligned and steady on the bike, except that it’s for storing my bike upright (tipped upright) on my turbo trainer to move it out of the way in my office. I fashioned a piece of spare lumber to rest the seat tube on so that the bike would stay upright on the trainer.
Conor, that was brutal - but great!
The children have taken over :):). Kudos guys, great show. Also, GTN made that comment before Paris-Roubaix. Maybe that’s why all the running after P-R :)
GTN have a lot of influence 🙌
14:33 "Punching Milk Jugs" !? 🤣
Weather seems to feature in my worst ways to finish a ride! I once set off to cycle the 20 miles home from my parents in over cast cold weather, and by the time I'd gone 6 miles there was 3 inches of snow on wet roads, and I was drenched and frozen. I piled into a friend's house and they warmed me up and took me home! On another occasion, on holiday in Mallorca I stopped a ride 60km in because I'd already drunk all my drinks, and was suffering from heatstroke. I've never been so grateful to sit down, in the shade and drink several litres of water!
But possibly the worst way to end a ride was to have an absolute belter of a row with my partner - i ended up turning round and going home on my own, leaving them to cycle on in a strop.
Surely Connor gets the water bottle next week??! That was brutal...
Plenty of positive news, cheers lads 👍
These two bring the good vibes 🙌
I haven't watched the GCN show for about a year, though my subscription must be close to 10yrs old. I'm not unfamiliar with these two, but seeing them both presenting the GCN show, which mostly was Dan Lloyd and Matt Richardson for so long, was comedy central. They now have enough history together to have a certain chemistry. Keep it up guys. GCN is doing so well.
A memorable ride that ended my cycling season too soon in a polytrauma: THA ( broken hip ) + TBI (brain concussion) + broken collarbone + pulmonary edema. I did well since the following winter I was able to do 1600 km of cross-country skiing . BTW I would like you to do a study on the predominance of which hip (left or right) is most often broken during road cycling accidents involving no other element than the fall of the cyclist. I suspect that the right is more often broken in Right-hand traffic countries and vice-versa in countries where driving is LHT. Probably that the cyclists, unconsciously do not want to be thrown into the middle of the road.
I was 66 and coming home from a nice Sunday ride in July 2021. About 100 yards from home - I had a mild heart attack. One stint later - the following October I rode 40 miles in the Texas Ride to End Alzheimer's. #Ride2EndALZ Not looking to repeat that one.... the heart attack. I am training do the ALZ ride again.
Love a special from 'little and large' :D
Once ended a MTB ride by planking on a log, heading straight over the handlebars and into some nettles. Was 2 miles from home so not too bad.
Ouch! Bet you were buzzing after that crash 😂
Don’t know what stung more, the nettles or your comment 🤣🤣🤣
With a 100km+ group ride nearly done, just 0.5km from my house, I turned into my neighborhood (first 90-degree turn in over at least 40km), and the front wheel came out from under me and I hit the deck. It was a very slow flat due to a staple picked up in the tire. I coasted home on the flat (gentle downhill) it’s a few spots of road rash.
#CaptionCompetition - Sorry mate, just saw Andrew Feather’s stolen your last KOM
Literally just fell off my bike in front of my house yesterday after my first ride outdoors with clipless pedals. Won’t make the same mistake again! 😅

I want to see GCN presenters compete to build the most aero DIY fairings like the bike in hacks/bodges! I'd be especially interested in seeing what mad science would come from putting Ollie's aero knowledge up against Doddy's craftsmanship abilities, and Hank/Conner as wild cards! #gcntech #gmbntech #gcndoesscience

We had all those reasons on Stage 6 of the Cape Epic 2023 🚵♀️, plus no breaks, plus rocks and single tracks, plus broken wrist, and it didn’t stop us for getting to the finish line.. 2min to the cutoff time 🤭 But don’t ask me how we made it.. we don’t know 🙈
Great video of Conor and Marcel cycling in the Philippines, just saw it on GCN+. Wondering if Conor and Marcel ate balut while they were there? It's a delicacy over there.
Caption of the week: When you hit your brother a little bit to hard and tell him he can hit you back.
I road Trail Ridge Road in July, once. By the time I got to the top, snow was falling. This was after 90 minutes of hard climbing to over 12,000 feet. I rode down and got so chilled I had to call my wife to pick me up. I was shivering to the point where I could not hold the bars straight.
I use to be stationed in Philippines, I rode all over the island of Luzon tip to tip and over all the mountains. Looking forward to this show to see how much it has changed..
I'm born and still living in the Philippines. Was a roadie at at the age of 11 in the city of Manila in the year 1993 for only two years and then stopped due to studies and then went back to cycling this 2020. Back then in 1993 we have no bike lanes but roads are a lot less congested, better maintained, very few motorcycles, less polluted, less distracted / more polite courteous drivers, and much safer. In other words, it's a way safer to ride back in 1993 and I think up until 2005. Today, despite having bike lanes, riding is far more dangerous than last 1993.
wooooo! made the intro!!
I listened to Geraint Thomas & Luke Rowe podcast today (Watt's Occuring), apparently Cameron Wurf even went for a "small run" BEFORE the race !!!
Dude's an absolute lunatic 🤯
It's very impressive! Maybe a cross rider in him... all that running 👀
The worst way I ever ended a ride was with a broken collar bone.
Nasty! Very comman in cycling 👀
Ouch!
Been there!
Broken arm for me. Didn't make it round a corner and then 10ft drop. 😢
Ran over a rattlesnake once and it got rapped up in the rear wheel/derailleur . Had to wait till it died before I could pull out the carcass
Connor’s sense of humor had me laughing, his caption was harsh but very funny. Also, his comment about him being a good swimmer, and about Hank being the ride-ender. 😂😂😂
Funniest caption ever
The key to good parenting. Is getting up before your spawn does and getting out for a ride.
Where I live we get dust storms. Either you end your ride before it starts and head indoors, or risk getting your lungs sliced open so they leak air as you breathe.
If it happens while your bike is locked outside to a rack you'll come out to find your bike's chain (and other components) completely covered with grinding paste.
Do you do lots of indoor cycling? 👀
@@gcn I don't own an indoor trainer, I just wait for the weather to clear before riding.
Hey John your are the real MVP of the race.
The only ride I never finished was the first day of three the Bike Virginia Tour. I was involved in a hit-and-run with 3 & 1/2 miles left of the 50 mile route. Suffering a Tibia crown fracture, four cracked ribs crack sternum severe internal bruising and that’s not to mention grass and gravel rash everywhere.
I was on the bell lap of one of the top criteriums on my calendar. I knew I had to power through the off camber downhill #3 turn, before a little hill before the last turn. I jumped before the turn to go through it first but hit a pedal stroke at the off-camber apex of the turn. I must have launched around 3 feet and rolled a back tire from the impact. I didn't take anyone else out, because I had a gap before the turn. I ended up sliding across the roadway at 40mph, leaving yards of skin stuck to the pavement. Nothing was busted, so I had to drive home 120 miles, sitting on areas with little skin.
First day out on my completely refurbished & upgraded retro bike & I snapped my chain... twice! The first, luckily, was 1km from a Halfords but the 2nd was 2 miles away from home at the bottom of a hill, had to walk the last 20 mins.
Oh no! Hopefully the bike is up and running again now? We'd love to see it on the GCN app! 👉 gcn.eu/app
@@gcn Thanks. Brand new SRAM chain & not had any problems since.
The Shimano patent could quite easily be a red herring, there are a number of patents never see the light of day. Having said that, I don't see the point on the road. Once your cleat has been properly set up you're good. Having said that, off road might have its uses. Moving your cleat further back on the descents to get your heels down for stability, then moving them back into the optimum pedalling position for getting the power down.
#captioncompetition "John John.......is our hair OK for the podium presentation?"
I fell into a deep swamp once, my front wheel sunk deep into the mud, I fell in it and had my legs stuck in the swamp for around 20 minutes. By the time I managed to wiggle myself out of there, flies and other bugs were crawling all over me, getting into my ears and poking my eyeballs. I still had to ride 20 km to get home, but that swamp did end my ride. My bike, my kit and myself were smelling like trash for a while after that. Another time it was some -10 degrees outside, and some ice in the brake hose didn't let my brake release the wheel in a crossing. The wheels would not budge and I had to drag my bike like a dead horse walking on ice and take the bus. I had some oil put in the hoses after that and went back to biking into blizzards and the cold.
I moved my cleats this week because I was struggling with a little bit of toe numbness. I’m not exaggerating when I say 5mm of movement made SO much difference to my comfort and power output on the bike. I would be interested to see tech where you can move cleats during a Ride!
I'd love movable cleats. On my gravel bike my shoes and pedals work together well, on my tandem same SPD shoes and similar pedals but somehow my feet don't like it.
Great to see that you've been improving the fit on your bike 🙌 If you find the correct spot you should be able to ride forever with no issues. That said, there are different coloured road cleats that will allow for a certain amount of float. This means the clean can move slightly whilst clipped in. This could be a great option 👀
Pedaling home from aride, a storm came up really fast with lightning and torrential rain , rain so hard I couldn’t t See went under an old shed in the woods , which lightning struck!!!
Mad home made aero modifications are the best
Its awsome that you give away water bottles, but I really wish you had some insulated ones. I prefer them because my water never gets so insanely hot over the course of my 2-8 hour rides. When its over 90 degrees here, regular bottles just dont work for me.

Worst so far had been a broken collarbone on a “bike lane”… along a highway about a 30 minute drive from my home. Had to get an Uber (not knowing I broke a bone and headed home) and they kept declining thinking I’m a hitch hiker on the road or not wanting to pick me up with a bike.

I live just south of the alps and yeah, these hailstorms are brutal. They only happen once every couple of years, but when they do, they shut everything down for the duration. And they can start very quickly. One minute you see a couple of dark clouds and the next minute theres a barrage of ice fired from a heavenly gatling gun. Luckily most of the time the hail only lasts for a short amount of time. Longest time I remember was about 15 minutes sitting in a car at the side of the road waiting for it to calm down.
Those Hailstorms are brutal! What a great playground to have in your backyard!!! Are you near any big climbs? 👀
@@gcn Kinda. Nothing beyond 300m per climb. But you can hit a couple of those in a single ride. Not much tarmac though. I prefer mountainbikes anyway.
