I LOVE the boating community! Brought a tear to me to see how many fellow vessels showed up to help!!! And they got in there and got it done!!! Best of humanity right there!!!
I'm a single-handed female sailor--and I had a breach in my prop shaft on the night of Dec. 4, 2018... took on about 700 gallons on my 27ft sailboat. I was hand-bailing into my cockpit--and then hand-bailing overboard. I was close to hypothermia (in Southern California) when I was finally hauled out. Warms my heart to see all the aid bestowed on this sinking boat.
    Bravo, gentleman...Bravo!!

Brought a tear to my eye. All those fishermen we're just trying to keep a captain from losing everything. Rules on the water a completely different from land. That is why one of the reasons why I love being out in the water so much. People will not know you but they will do everything they can to help you. it's not about the maritime law it's about treating people the way you want to be treated

How often do you see assisting vessels save the BOAT as well as the crew? Very impressive how many vessels came to lend assistance here and did an expert job of getting that situation under control. Wendys skipper must have been thrilled. And as soon as the situation is brought under control, everyone disappears! Time is money, man, back to work! That's a hardy bunch up there in Alaska.

I operate Tenders such as the Amatuli, since the early 90's. Do you notice, that only the Tender has a portable pump to save the guy? I know that with only 32 feet of boat allowed, that space is limited. However, I have seen pacer pumps mounted on the rail of some boats, powered by hydraulics, and a suction hose to throw either over the side for washdown, or into the hold for pump out. In this case, both of those gillnetters could have pumped him out before the Amatuli got on scene. It is also, on a small vessel, THE biggest pump available! They should be mandatory! 12volt Rule pumps will not cut it if the leak is large. Having been sunk once myself, one can never have too many pumps!

Years ago, I worked in the charter fishing fleet from Indian River, Delaware for an "old school" captain. I had a reputation of being the best jerry rigger in the fleet (actually they used a different non-PC term). If we were anywhere close to a boat with a problem, I just got my small tool kit and a 5 gallon bucket and prepared to board.

If i had to guess, its the prop shaft seal developed a bad leak when the net fowled in the prop. You can see the net over the aft starboard cleats. That is also probably why it was taking so long to fully sink. The water rushed toward ok the bow and raised the prop seals up closer to the surface wear there was less pressure, slowing it down a lot. But it would not have stayed up for too much longer thank god there are awesome people that the bystander affect does not affect on! Made me feel really good to watch.

No offense intended, but I believe you mean "cavalry". "Calvary" is a hill near Jerusalem where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified.

I had a similar situation off Cedar Key in florida early this year. I was fishing offshore in my Freeman 34 and we got a call from the coast guard saying that approx. 50 miles north of us there were 2 men missing on their fishing vessel who hadnt come back the night before. So we packed up, and headed full throttle to the north, had radar going so we found me in no time at all. Gave coast guard location and they came and assisted

Great skill getting the lines around the cleats, thought someone was gonna have to get wet to do that.

The horizon is distant, the water is cold, your friends are not near, and you are floating in a bathtub. Blessings to all fishermen.

As soon as you see that help is there and you're going to be alright, you're happy for a few seconds until you realize the absolute mess you're going to have to deal with having your boat sink. A commercial boat at that.

I fish on a small bass boat on a lake in Texas but if I ever started taking on water uncontrollably and someone stepped in like that they would not only get my thanks and an open tap at a bar but my friendship for life.

Right? I'd be loving on all of those people who came to help and you know they were all going full speed ahead with their hearts pounding to get there in time: holiday cards, birthday cards, and I'd be mighty grateful to be sending every single one. But some folks aren't communicative, and also, maybe that captain feels guilty... the rescuing captain did say he revealed he'd made a couple of stupid mistakes. I appreciate the video being posted... so great to see!
