A month after a signed prize free agent safety Xavier McKinney, Brian Gutekunst took the 2024 NFL draft’s top off-ball linebacker in Edgerrin Cooper and one of the draft’s 2 or 3 best safeties in Javon Bullard, giving Jeff Hafley a pair of fast, physical, and disruptive players and adding a defense already dripping with young talent. There are top NFL prospects all over the Green Bay Packers defense. Jeff Hafley should have everything he needs to hit the ground running in Year 1. This is becoming a commonplace for Brian Gutekunst and our Packers. The offensive line needed help and depth, the safety position needed to be rebuilt, and the linebacker position needed help and depth. Brian Gutekunst spent 8 total draft picks on what many saw as the roster’s 3 biggest needs. A sturdy roster in other spots following excellent draft classes in 2022 and 2023 helped give the Packers leeway in terms of stocking up elsewhere. Another theme: Run and hit. That simple phrase must have been used 10 times in draft pressers and interviews in Green Bay. In Edgerrin Cooper, Javon Bullard, Ty’Ron Hopper, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo. The Packers believe they drastically improved the defense’s speed and hitting ability. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛
I think its Gute's best draft yet. Hes literally building his own Legion of Boom. Already got Jaire to be the Richard Sherman shutown corner. Added Xavier McKinney to be the deep safety like Earl Thomas. Got Edgerrin Cooper to be the Bobby Wagner linebacker. And he added 2 boppers to fill the Kam Chancellor box safety role. Im in no way saying those guys are all as good as LOB, but you can clearly see what Gute's trying to do. Hes seen enough soft defense for a lifetime so he went out and got a bunch of guys who can run and hit the crap out of guys.
It’s been a minute Mr. Monson.
Less informative than I figured it would be.
Was hoping for this exact episode! Hell yeah man!
