Also if you are interested in Doctor who, just know that it is an episodic show with different writers for each episode so it varies in quality from bad to amazing. For Doctor who I would recommend watching season 3 Episode 10 'blink', it doesn't require watching any other episodes and it is probably the best episode ever.
Peaky blinders was filmed at the Black Country living museum in the West Midlands, not far from the Castle, five minutes down the road from me. You often see people dressed in the same way walking about, plus a bit of steam punk, very cool!
Luther and Peaky Blinders are both excellent - I've researched my family history and discovered that my Great Grandfather originated from Birmingham. I didn't have a clue as he died a long time before I was born and my grandfather never spoke of his parents. My Great Grandfather was raised in the Jewelery Quarter and Small Heath area of Birmingham and moved down to Devon in 1901. The first series of Peaky Blinders is set in Small Heath in 1919, so it gave me a really good view on how the family lived up there.
My favourites are Sherlock(it’s clever) and Doctor Who. Dr. who has been going since the early 60s the first clip you saw was an early one so not really relevant but then there was a long gap and those are much better especially with David Tennant The Doctor regenerates so a lot of actors get to play him. He’s talking to the face of Bo which is a futuristic episode.
Dr Who is definitely worth checking out. I'm a massive fan so I'd say start from the beginning of the new Who. (The classic Who is also amazing but there are 871 episodes, would take you a while to catch up) Although if you just want to dip into it and watch a random episode, I highly recommend the one called 'Blink' 3rd series ep. 10. Widely recognised as one of the best written and works well as a stand alone episode, contains no spoilers, so you can go back to the beginning once your hooked.
@@almac2598 If by 'New ones' you mean the ones with Jodie Whittaker as the Dr. I agree Chris Chibnall's writing isn't the best although their still a good yarn. If by 'Woke' you mean 'recognising and reflecting the diversity of modern Britain and it's inhabitants.' I agree! The Doctor has always been a beacon of compassion and empathy starting from the very beginning. It’s a show of great empathy, humanity and tolerance and always has been, right from the start. The Dr has always stood up for the underdog. Dr Who has always been 'Woke' for its time, from the day it first aired in 1963
Just found your channel by pure accident and am totally hooked. Ive been watching 5 or 6 every night..love it. Peaky Blinders you MUST watch this, Luther is good too. Also if you get the chance watch The last Kingdom, its based on historical events ....I actually learnt something from this, like you I was taught in school, but never paid attention. Keep up the videos 😊😊😊
Monty Python was a group of anarchic comedians including John Cleese. They made a couple of films e. g. Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Peaky Blinders is a gangster series. It's recently ended. I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy this.
I'm quite amazed that the list didn't contain shows such as crime drama Line of Duty, quiz The Chase which has become popular in the USA, crime drama Vera and god only knows how many more.
Dr Who, yes! Plus it's spin off Torchwood. Monty python's flying Circus is a must. However, my current favourite is a Netflix series, The Last Kingdom, based on the books by Bernard Cornwell. Set in the time off King Alfred and the Danes, you have a sweeping historical series that blends fact with real and a few imagined characters. Fantastic battle scenes, King Alfred burning the cakes and just so much history. Bernard Cornwell is an excellent historical fiction, based on true events and people, author. Read his books.
The first three or even four seasons of Luther are great, and the best part is that the longest season is about 6-8 episodes, so it actually goes very fast. Also, it will give you some idea of how not present are weapons in European life (and consider that the presence of guns is amplified in TV shows).
One great thing about British TV is that their seasons (or series as they call them) only run from about 4 - 10 episodes long. They do this so that actors can work in many different productions. As Americans, we can view some on regular TV (Doctor Who, Downton Abby, etc). However, there are an even wider range of British TV shows available via Acorn & Britbox streaming services. You can find tons of dramas, comedies, documentaries on both. Acorn: Line of Duty, Blood, London Kills. Documentaries: Murder Maps, Inside the Bank of England, Walking Tudor England, Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty, Tales of Irish Castles, and many more Britbox: Suspect, Vera, Shetland, Wallander, Line of Duty, and all of Agatha Christie adaptations. Documentaries: Murder Case, In the Footsteps of Killers, Catching the Game Show Killer, Lennon's Last Weekend, Britain's Secret Treasures, A History of Ancient Britain, plus many on the Royal Family. There is an Irish sitcom that you should watch. It is definitely hilarious. It is called Mrs. Brown's Boys. You can find the episodes & specials on Britbox. You can also find clips on RUclips.
@@amandag5072 I like Father Ted, but I couldn't really get into Black Books. I wasn't sure which types of comedies he would like. So, I was more recommending the crime dramas. I only mentioned Mrs. Brown's Boys because it is a truly Irish comedy.
Peaky Blinders is six series, it's set in between the wars, it's about a Birmingham based, gypsy, crime family and their gang.......well worth watching, brilliant series, I would advise watching with subtitles, as the accents can be quite difficult.
Peck Blinders was based on the true story of the founder of the betting shop William Hill. This was the first legalised company to offer betting not on a race track in the UK.
I can't recomend Peaky Blinders enough, it is just brilliant. As a tv series it is over with, I beleive they are going to end it all with a Movie. Luther is also a must, The Fall realy hooks you in.
What about the show "Father Ted" if you can find it? It is a comedy that ran from 1995 to 1998 written for Channel Four in the UK. Set in Ireland three priests try to work together and manage the parish on Craggy Island after the bishop banished them for their actions in the past.
The name of junk e-mail being called SPAM was due to a skit in Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Monty Python is not a person just part of the name of the show. The member where, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin
The Fall is def worth a watch, and needless to say I’ve been a Sherlock Holmes fan for years, Jeremy Brett being “it” for me and Benedict Cumberbatch being the second “it” - if not on par with Jeremy Brett
Merlin was not just about dragons. It's of a young apprentice call Merlin who gets himself into all sorts of mischief. magic.wizardry. call it what you will. Just try Watching 1 or 2 episodes. I luv it. at times it will keep you on the edge of your seat. from UK 🇬🇧👍👍 an old cockney gal
You should check out Blackadder it is a great comedy with Rowan Atkinson(played Mr Been) as the lead, and it is set in a different time period in British history. Seasons 2-3-4 are amazing and 1 is still vary good, they are only 6 episodes per season so I highly recommend.
Monty Python was created in 1969 by 6 British actors/comedians. Their names are, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. Show first aired on the BBC in 1969, and filmed 45 episodes over 4 series, and between 1971 to 1983 The Monty Python had made 5 movies.
Love Peaky Blinders (I live in Brum). Yes it's done 6 seasons and has finished on TV, however it has it's own clothing range, I went to see Peaky Blinders: The Ballet, and there's also a film planned
Downton Abbey is brilliant. When you're watching it, it's like you're sat in the room; really surreal. I don't know if that's abut how it's shot but defo a-must watch.
Good video! Definite more recent shows for you to review and that I think you would like (based on what you said in this video), here are some good recommendations: Vigil - Recent conspiracy series involving a Royal Navy attack sub. Very stressful! Bodyguard - Thriller involving a returned veteran from Afghanistan who ends up being bodyguard for the UK Home Secretary Line of Duty - Several seasons following a team of Police Officers who investigate police corruption and conspiracies. Luther - Several seasons - Already covered in your vid! Enough enjoyment / content for review here to last you months! I really think you should try each of those!
The Fall is fantastic. Filmed in Ireland, didn't watch it at first because of the 50 Shades actor but so glad I did. Brilliant acting and storyline. Downton Abbey is good, but you'd have to give up your free time for the next year to catch up. Ha Ha. You wouldn't learn anything of the British Culture by watching any of these but you would be well entertained. Good luck, I like watching and hearing your comments, a trip over here would put you right!
Peaky Blinders lead Cillian Murphy (/ˈkɪliən/; born 25 May 1976) is an Irish actor. Originally the lead singer, guitarist, and lyricist of the rock band The Sons of Mr. Green Genes, he turned down a record deal in the late 1990s and began acting on stage and in short and independent films. Never seen it myself and never heard of #10. P B: The final series was broadcast in 2022.
Sherlock is one of my favourite shows ever!m(minus the last season - that's crap = sorry) You should also check out Miss Marple (either with Margaret Rutherford or Joan Hickson) if you want to see a real old-school British film/series. A REALLY good current series is also Shetland! AMAZING!
the name Monty python is the name of the group. They made 2 films that you probably heard of, Monty Python and the holy grail and Monty Python life of Brian (which was banned at the time of its release due to it basically mocking religion aha)
Most of the shows on this list are short seasons between 6-12 episodes each, so its not too much of a time sink. Peaky Blinder's is awesome. Monty Python is just comedic insanity. Dr Who has some really good story arcs. Hope you enjoy whichever ones you watch 😉
Police/crime drama 'Line of Duty' is worth checking out. 'Peaky Blinders' was brilliant. 'Blackadder' is a good one too... same cast set in different time eras. Very funny.
Oooohw, The Face of Boe, a big face in a jar and yet so much more meaning behind this short clip. As always, the writers of Doctor Who manage to give simple things a deeper meaning, traveling through time and space, meeting people from history (Things my children learned and impressed their teachers in school because of this show) or stories from another world were we still can relate to. I hope you give Doctor Who a chance. It's the best family sci-fi show in the Whoniverse. As others stated, either watch blink to get the geste of the show (timetravel) or just dive in with 'Rose' and see beyond the low budget how much fun sci-fi can be. Alons-y.
Inside No 9 is far better than Black Mirror It's an Anthology show written and performed by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith ( both of League of Gentlemen and Psychoville) and they are absolutely brilliant
There were two recent TV shows that I liked, the first is called 'Fearless' (a crime show) it has only one season so you wouldn't get bogged down into watching four or five seasons as you would with other TV shows. The leading actress Helen McCrory was great. She also played in Peaky Blinders so if you watch Peaky Blinders you will get to know her. Unfottunately, Helen McCrory has now passed away. Be careful, there is also a Netflix TV series called 'Fearless' which is completely different. The British 'Fearless' has Helen McCrory. The other recent show I liked also has only one season, it's called 'The Loch' (another crime show). It takes place in Loch Ness in Scotland. I liked it not only for the story and the characters but also for the scenery of Loch Ness. Another show which came out in the late 1960s (yet in some ways seems timeless and has a strong cult following) is 'The Prisoner' with the actor Patrick McGoohan (also only one season). It has a typical 'English' feel to it. It was filmed in Port Meirion and every year loyal fans go there to meet up for a celebration. If you like the look of the Port Meirion in this TV show you could always visit it on your journey around Britain. There was also an American copy of this show, although they changed many things, the American version was also called 'The Prisoner' and takes place in the desert, completely different. As for Doctor Who, I prefer the original Doctor Who shows (the first two doctors especially but the third and fourth were also good) but that's just my personal opinion. If you can, try to watch the very first episode of Doctor Who called 'The Unearthly Child'. It's in black and white and came out in (November)1963, but just this one episode would be a good starter for you. It's how it all begins. I hope you get to see these shows, but as you say, it can be time consuming, however, in my humble opinion, they are good shows.
Peaky Blinders is gritty and violent but that said you are fully invested in the central family who are the gangsters and it makes for compulsive viewing. Downton Abbey is equally brilliant in a completely different way following the lives of the aristocratic family above stairs and the servants below stairs. Monty Python's Flying Circus is the name of the show, very much of its time but an icon of British TV. Ground breaking at the time. Merlin is an adaptation of the British legend of King Arthur. Never heard of Catastrophe.
One new show I quite like is "SAS Rogue Heroes" that is loosely based on the founding of the British SAS in WW2. Alfie Allen brother of singer Lilly Allen who you might know for playing Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones is in it.
I just wanted to say I'm a fan of yours simply because of how down to earth you are and your appreciation of our British ways. You are great to listen to and your videos are very engaging. Keep up the great work! Oh and yeah Peaky Blinders is a great show, I'm from Brum and it's fun to watch. There's another show that's good on Prime called London Kills, very down to earth detective show. Lots of twists and turns.
If you give doctor who a go, it's worth bearing in mind that each actor that takes the role brings a different energy, so if you're not feeling one you can check out another. Like it's hard to watch the older series but Tom Baker is fun in the role.
Most British shows are 6 episodes a season. Peaky definitely a mustwatch. Luther is excellent too. Merlin and Dr Who were aimed at a younger audience but got a bit 'older' as they went on
Judging from reviews on the American Amazon site, there are several other British series that have gone down very well with American viewers, whether it be through pay tv, streaming services or DVD box set purchases. For example: 'Vera' a brilliant police procedural set in the photogenic North East England, featuring Brenda Blethyn as the irascible, calculating and dischevelled Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, a nearly retired police officer, obsessive about her work and her team. Has a certain 'Columbo' feel. Based on the top notch detective stories written by Ann Cleeves. 'Doc Martin'. Starring Martin Clunes and an ensemble cast, a much loved, offbeat and quirky story of a brilliant London surgeon with Aspergers and a blood phobia, who decides to give up surgery, and try General Practise in a small seaside town in Cornwall that he knows from childhood visits. There have been half a dozen international copies of the format. Has a certain 'Northern Exposure' vibe.
I don't watch many shows at all and wouldn't normally be drawn to something like Peaky Blinders but I started watching and it is actually really good. Definitely recommend.
Luther is excellent. It might have you checking under your bed ... if you've seen it, you'll know the episode ... Peaky Blinders : you may benefit from using the subtitles to begin with. It's based in the UK's West Midlands (where I'm from) and their accent might be a bit awkward if you're not familiar with. Mothy Python : is very abstract comedy
Hi Steve. You have definitely got to watch Peaky Blinders it’s absolutely amazing. I won’t spoil it for you but WOAH it’s addictive and you can’t wait for the next episode to see what happens next Enjoy it matey. Best wishes to you from Tracey in the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️xxxxxx
The modern Who reboot is one of those shows where investment in the early, lower budget and sillier episodes is very much rewarded by the depth and ambition of the show once it finds its feet. Merlin - I doubt you'd enjoy. I liked it, but it's quite campy and of its time and didn't really get the chance to develop the kind of depth it hinted at
Downton Abby was worth a look. The story shows life of the servants and there stories as well as the posh family. Interesting contrast between the 2 with some good overlapping stories.
Most big Irish TV shows are co productions with British, Father Ted, Derry Girls, Mrs Brown's Boys wouldn't have seen the light of day without backing from CH4 or BBC and also because of population being much bigger in the UK they become very big hits.
Yes the likes of kilinaskully and love/hate never crossed the irish sea,but were huge in ireland.RTE our national broadcaster is no great shakes, ironically TG4 the irish language station has better output.
I still remember hiding behind the couch, peeking between the cushions as a kid watching the first appearance of the cybermen with William Hartnell as the Doctor when I was about 6. He was scarier than the monsters most of the time. I'm now 62 and still enjoy it.
Peaky Blinders is awesome. Though if you're not good with some very specific 1920s-30s British accent and dialect, subtitles may help (I never needed them, but I'm British). The TV show is done now, but the story isn't necessarily done - the creator has said there may be a final film (instead of a 7th series), and that there may be other branches to the story in the future. Monty Python is the group (the show was 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'). Possibly the most famous British comedy group of all time. New Who is incredibly compelling, way better than Game of Thrones, and much more about character than most people realise. The first series takes a while to find its feet, but by Dalek and The Empty Child, it's getting there.
I tried to watch the first few episodes of Peaky Blinders when it was first aired in late 2013 it did nothing for me at the time and didn't bother continuing with it, then back in 2020 I decided to give it another go, due to hype and word of mouth from friends and family. I got hooked on it now I believe it to be one of the best British TV shows out there. My favourite is Midsomer Murders, the old ones with John Nettles, its a "Who Done it - detective Drama" type show that is well written, intelligent, well acted and keeps you guessing till the last few minutes.
May I make a suggestion a very quintessentially British comedy drama where you can sit on your sofa with a beer ,glass of wine or a cuppa and melt into this blissfully relaxation and laugh and smile The Detectorists ❤🇬🇧😊😊😊

Dr Who has always been 'Woke' for its time, from the day it first aired in 1963
Not to mention, some of the classic just aren't available being wiped from the BBC archives to reuse the tapes.
@@KernowWarrior New ones starts in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston.
Should certainly watch peaky blinders. One of my top series to watch!
I really like the David Tennant and Matt Smith Doctor Who.
Yes I think they may be my two favourites. David is my favourite.
You will not be disappointed by Peaky Blinders 👌🏼
Doctor Who with David Tennant are the best ones ever so you should check those out. Downton Abbey is good too.
Enjoy 😃
David Tennant- cannot go wrong.
David Tennant is great in everything
Only liked David as The Doctor never watched again after he left
Doctor Who has so many levels to it. My favourite show.
Mine too, been a fan for about 16 years
Monty Python was a group of anarchic comedians including John Cleese.
For comedy Motherland is hilarious. Also afterlife by Ricky Gervais is surprisingly touching while also being very funny.
I loved Afterlife, it was brilliant, darkly funny and touching, a no holds barred look at what is important in life.
Could I recommend you watch Derry Girls, it’s an Irish drama set in the 1990’s. It’s brilliant 😂
O man Dr who. Started in 1963. First Dr was William Hartnell. Fantastic. from UK 🇬🇧👍👍 an old cockney gal
"Luther", for me, is a must-watch. Proper crime procedural with a charismatic antagonist, and a great protagonist character arc.
Documentaries: Murder Maps, Inside the Bank of England, Walking Tudor England, Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty, Tales of Irish Castles, and many more
Britbox: Suspect, Vera, Shetland, Wallander, Line of Duty, and all of Agatha Christie adaptations.
You're forgeting Father Ted, and Black Books.
Sorry, but I find Mrs. Brown terrible.
@@amandag5072 I like Father Ted, but I couldn't really get into Black Books. I wasn't sure which types of comedies he would like. So, I was more recommending the crime dramas. I only mentioned Mrs. Brown's Boys because it is a truly Irish comedy.
@@elemar5 No apologies needed, Mrs browns boys is so low brow, the brow is practically in hell 🤗.
Peaky Blinders is a excellent series. Definitely recommend.
As a Brit, the only one of these I’ve ever seen is ‘The Fall’. Well worth a watch.
Peaky Blinders is fantastic mate, I was never into series stuff, more of a movie buff, but Peaky Blinders changed my mind.
Terry Gilliam is American and responsible for the crazy animations
Love Peaky Blinders (I live in Brum). Yes it's done 6 seasons and has finished on TV, however it has it's own clothing range, I went to see Peaky Blinders: The Ballet, and there's also a film planned
Downton Abbey is brilliant.
When you're watching it, it's like you're sat in the room; really surreal. I don't know if that's abut how it's shot but defo a-must watch.
Good video! Definite more recent shows for you to review and that I think you would like (based on what you said in this video), here are some good recommendations:
Vigil - Recent conspiracy series involving a Royal Navy attack sub. Very stressful!
Bodyguard - Thriller involving a returned veteran from Afghanistan who ends up being bodyguard for the UK Home Secretary
Line of Duty - Several seasons following a team of Police Officers who investigate police corruption and conspiracies.
Filmed in Northern Ireland, not filmed at all in ireland proper
Peaky blinders is brilliant ! Very well written and brilliantly acted
Best comedy TV show of all time is.. Only fools and Horses
Peaky Blinders is right up there with Band of Brothers for me. Masterpiece, well worth a watch
For me "Downton Abbey" is just a modern continuation of "Upstairs Downstairs" from the 70s
Sherlock is one of my favourite shows ever!m(minus the last season - that's crap = sorry)
You should also check out Miss Marple (either with Margaret Rutherford or Joan Hickson) if you want to see a real old-school British film/series. A REALLY good current series is also Shetland! AMAZING!
Catastrophe is a brilliant comedy.Fleabag is a hilarious comedy as well.Still Game is great if you like Scottish comedy.
the name Monty python is the name of the group.
Very funny.
I love peaky blinders! And I rarely watch TV. Deffo worth watching it all. Once I started, I had to watch them all
Oooohw, The Face of Boe, a big face in a jar and yet so much more meaning behind this short clip.
Alons-y.
Each voiced their own opinion on British tv… simply, we’re the best at being gritty, funny and convincing.
Inside No 9 is far better than Black Mirror
It's an Anthology show written and performed by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith ( both of League of Gentlemen and Psychoville) and they are absolutely brilliant
I hope you get to see these shows, but as you say, it can be time consuming, however, in my humble opinion, they are good shows.
my favorites were R K Jowling 'Strike' series 1, 2, 3, and 'Shetland' series 1-7. 'Farscape' an Australian Sci Fi
I was waiting for Friday night dinner to be in this list 👌🏻😂
Monty Python and the Flying Circus is on Netflix here in America along with a few of their films. Highly recommend watching it.
It's called 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'.
The Peaky Blinders is definitely worth a watch! Was obsessed from the start 😍👌
Part's of Peaky blinders was filmed in my home town, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
The first black and white original Dr Who had our children watching from behind the sofa or peeping watching from outside the room.
Monty Python's Life of Brian, Bigus Dickus sketch is one of the funniest things EVER!
Most British shows are 6 episodes a season. Peaky definitely a mustwatch. Luther is excellent too. Merlin and Dr Who were aimed at a younger audience but got a bit 'older' as they went on
Merlin is great, I watch it over and over again. There’s 4 seasons all available BBC iPlayer (a catch-up TV service) ❤❤
Judging from reviews on the American Amazon site, there are several other British series that have gone down very well with American viewers, whether it be through pay tv, streaming services or DVD box set purchases. For example:
'Vera' a brilliant police procedural set in the photogenic North East England, featuring Brenda Blethyn as the irascible, calculating and dischevelled Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, a nearly retired police officer, obsessive about her work and her team.
Just finished watching peaky blinders I loved it
My brother was in the first three series, he was in the background of the opening shots that were shown.
Peaky Blinders is a brilliant series , there's also a documentary on the real peaky Blinders that's also brilliant viewing. 🙂
Love the plots in Downton Abbey. The film in the cinema in Madrid was packed a few years ago.
The modern Who reboot is one of those shows where investment in the early, lower budget and sillier episodes is very much rewarded by the depth and ambition of the show once it finds its feet.
Merlin - I doubt you'd enjoy. I liked it, but it's quite campy and of its time and didn't really get the chance to develop the kind of depth it hinted at
Merlin was more of a kids show.
I loved Merlin,it was comical,so funny somtimes
Downton Abby was worth a look. The story shows life of the servants and there stories as well as the posh family. Interesting contrast between the 2 with some good overlapping stories.
I love downton abbey. I don’t know why Line of Duty wasn’t on this list but I recommend that too.
Mrs Brown Boys isn’t worth mentioning it’s embarrassingly bad.
@@bcent5758 Its supposed to be bad. Thats why it's fun. My mother loves it.
I've been a fan of Doctor who since I was 8. Watched every episode! I'm now 26
I still remember hiding behind the couch, peeking between the cushions as a kid watching the first appearance of the cybermen with William Hartnell as the Doctor when I was about 6. He was scarier than the monsters most of the time. I'm now 62 and still enjoy it.
If you like crime dramas I would recommend Silent witness which is from the angle of home office pathologists
I watched it all. It's fab. Must watch...its finished. You can get all the seasons
Peaky blinders fucin excellent
May I make a suggestion a very quintessentially British comedy drama where you can sit on your sofa with a beer ,glass of wine or a cuppa and melt into this blissfully relaxation and laugh and smile The Detectorists ❤🇬🇧😊😊😊
