My place of employment wants us to use those to probe metal chassis cable boxes so we don’t get blasted, but they’re so unpredictable. They’re good at telling you that your customers dog is live at 120 volts though
Sounds great, you should get one of those dogs use it as a portable generator by sticking a power cord into its ass to run all the needed power tools on the job site. No more fussing around with extension cords needed.
I’m going to bin all my overpriced boring safe Fluke test gear and replace with the Auban. I like living life on the edge. Nice one John. Regards Chris
Well... me and my dad have been using electrical neon mains present testing screw drivers for quite a long time and have not had any ill effects from them - excellent for holding against a live terminal (glowing neon) to see which circuit/MCB needs to be turned off, also the driver tip is the right size for electrical screws on plates, terminals, spur boxes, plugs and lamp holders.
The 'spring' effect of the rubber pad may be to improve the reliability of the connection between the tip and the wire. The rubber will compensate for bits moving around inside while maintaining the connection?
I would say the rubber bit is meant for insulation from the direct mains voltage. The fluke meter is reading "contaminates" in the rubber, or "ghost voltages" on the meter, hence the fluctuating readings on your meter. It looks as though the device is using "Capacitive Coupling" as a means of detection. If that is the case. then its "relatively safe" (if it doesn't get wet), but never the less, a useless piece of kit.
Every time you try and operate these weird black controls that are labelled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up in black to let you know you’ve done it.
JW may I ask were was most of if not all the electrical appliances in your home made? CHINA THAT'S WERE and your happy to have them in your home and use them on a dayly basis but you nock simple little things like a Chinese made neon screwdriver? If they are as bad and dangerous as you wrongly clame they would not be allowed and I doubt they would even get through customs at Heathrow Airport

Wow what a shitty device. There must be lots of people this "tool" injures or kills. Great video J.W. I hope that turd went straight into the bin after this.
The problem with those neon screwdrivers is that most people don't know what they are for and how to use them, Think about this your down your local club tomorrow lunchtime and you see the TV is no longer on the wall above the bar and you can see a red and a black wire sticking out of the wall where the single socket used to be the maneger ask you to sort it out, you don't know if it is live or not, you don't need to worry about the valtege as you know it is 230/240 valts you just want to know is live or not simple take your neon screwdriver out of your brest pocket and touch the end of the red wire neon eliminates now you know. Or your about to replace a ceiling rose you ask your son to turn of the bracket, as you start to undo the terminal screw on the rose the neon eliminates, your response to your son YOU FECKING IDEOT I TOLD YOU TO TURN OFF THE FECKING BRACKER .
i have one of these...its really bad...its not even good as a screwdriver..i know john dislikes neon phase pencils...but they are much better than this rubbish
I’m not an electrician nor do I know anything about electrics but JW is fascinating to watch ! Brilliant channel 👍🏼
'Good luck with that!' Thanks JW I choked on my coffee.
Really appreciate people with expertise sorting out the good and the bad! Thanks

Used one of those neon screwdrivers once. It tripped the RCD. At least I knew the power was then off
Dominic Davis-Foster An RCD tripping means it stopped a potentially lethal amount of current before it could cook your insides.
Tongue planted firmly in cheek during this review.
A modern version of the classic ‘Super Meter’, with it’s 3V insulation test provided by those little batteries.

I've been using them for 50 years and never had a problem...….lol
william jones I've been using them for 20 years now and damned if I can get them to work. 😊
Bonus points for using the word "Craptacular" :D

Hi John Ward, any chance of doing a video of all we need to know about touch voltage please ? many thanks

That conductive rubber is very constant. These type of items definitely won't be seeing the inside of my tool case.

I'm in the market for a backup non-contact voltage detector. Any advice?

At the rate fluke is going downhill, they might be onto something.
Craptacular!
The disease spreads! Everyone run to the hills! (expect to find a jovial canadian speaking in tongues noone fully grasps).
Indeed. That it is.
Next thing you know he'll be ending his videos with "Thanks considerably for watching, keep your appliance in a BSI-compliant receptacle!"
Robin Kok haha aVe
can this measure DC voltage? how it measure without ground wire?
My lcd don't display the voltage.
Please help me!!!
Does it have CE mark ?
maybe be a cheap way to get yourself some of those button cells. though they probably won't last very long.
You can get a pack of 10 button cells at poundland if you're in the UK or a $ store in US.
Strange rubbery item. 🙃❤😂😂🤣
Power with all my heart ! Lol
They don't seem to need luck to sell one to you.
Thanks coz i just cancelled my order for this as it doesn't look safe
That brand should be shortened to simply 'BAN'.

How about the insulation resistance? Is It good?
I like your vidoes
chinese on the packaging is a bad sign, lol.
That's a dyno-shite piece of kit!... Just an accident waiting to happen...
