Neale, I just watched this afternoon as I was missing the phone calls with Steve and found a card from him on my desk whilst "tidying up".....just remember sitting having soup and rolls around lunchtime at Steve's and Amanda's and laughing as all the clocks struck - I miss him and this made a tear well up yet again!
Not a week seems to go by, where I don't mention him or what he has said to someone. Only at the weekend just gone I was talking to a client who was interested in photography, and I talked of his advice to look up - and take a picture. You knew him for many more years than I, I wish I'd have known him sooner in my own photographic journey.
This, and all the work that you have been producing of late, is brilliant! Such a pleasure to watch and listen to. Kevin Mullins was correct in saying that your podcast is the best that is out there. I love documentaries about photographers. Yours are stunning. Peace to the Shipman family. What a gem of a man to have had as a father and husband.
It's taken far far far too long for me to answer this, and I cannot believe Steve has been gone for this long, I really can't - but thank you for your very kind comment, all those years ago.
I can’t add to the plaudits and tributes already recorded. This is simply a beautifully warm and compassionate interview and profile. One to treasure and be proud of.
Thank you Andrew... I have a feeling that Steve would have been a regular on Photography Daily, I just know the audience would have warmed to him. Bless Steve.
Just beautiful! The way he talks, smiles, his gestures, and of course his fantastic portraits. Thank you very much for sharing these wonderful 20odd minutes with this gentleman. His words, and images will stay in my soul. Thank you
Oh heavens. What photographs he took. What a nice man, as you so astutely observe, he is...was. And, again, what a beautiful video tribute to him and his work that you have made. Brilliant video, Neale. Well done, again.
A man whom I’d loved to have assisted back in the day. What a wonderful interview. On asking him what’s so special about Amanda, that look as he thought was magical. It’s the second time today you’ve made my eyes damp, the other was an Instagram post you put up. You’ve a true talent for sensitivity. Again a wonderful interview
Thank you for your considered comment. I share that wish that I could have assisted him, I really do. Funnily enough I shot a wedding last weekend where Amanda was a guest. We had a good chat and I was heartened to see that slung over her shoulder, was dear Steve's X100F. I still think there's a lot of Steve in that camera which he loved and took everywhere I think for the last year of his life.
Neale James, I’m sure his camera will have absorbed his spirit, object that are so tactile I believe do. His spirit will live on by his wife and daughters whom he clearly adored and also with this touching interview too.
Mission accomplished, Neale. What a wonderful film about a lovely man. Legacy indeed, and so much more. I may very well watch this more than once. Great work.
What a lovely interview! And lovely images too. I think I heard the audio of this - sometime ago - so it was great to match the voice with the face and the pictures. Thank you.
Thank you Del. Steve without a doubt was one of those rare breeds of creative who was truly supportive of everyone and everything. He's greatly missed by a lot of people.
Wow. This is a portrait of a happy man. So nice... And so nice to listen him talking about his photography... This is so much more rewarding than gear talk.
Thank you Bernhard. He is perhaps one of the most generous people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I'm a bit guilty of having made a gear talk film... but what you're seeing here is the result of what I wish I could photograph or film every day... legacy work
Yes I am afraid he has passed. My present tense is probably a touch of my denial. I still feel he is here. I have on my wall and actually you can see it in the film I made about the XT3 recently, the black and white picture I made of Steve. It sits behind me - I kind of feel he's watching on.
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant tribute to Steve Shipman a true charismatic and dear chap, thank you for sharing this outstanding vlog well done. What a great images, just love it !!!
Thank you for making this film Neale, it is an absolutely perfect summation of all Steve's wonderful attributes as an individual, as a photographer and as a caring family man. I will watch this frequently with a smile and a tear as a fabulous tribute to the best friend anyone could have.
Thank you Chris for taking the time to watch and comment. I know how close you were to Steve and he to you. I'm so privileged that Steve agreed to make this film.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise to find this, by chance, when browsing the KAGE Collective website. I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’d not heard of Steve before this, though I certainly recall seeing some of his work in the past. However, this beautifully shot, edited and produced video certainly rectified that and was so wonderfully intimate, it made you almost feel like you had known him for years before you were even half way through watching it - which I guess is both a testament to the quality of your work as much as the open nature of your subject. Thank you so much. I’m sure you are as proud of it as Steve’s family are (and if not you should be). A very moving and fitting portrait of a very fine portrait photographer. Well done 🙌
Thank you Stephen. Steve had that kind of personality and generous nature that you really did feel you knew him within minutes of a meet. I'm blessed to have been entrusted this film.
Neale just came across your channel and so glad I have, Steve seemed such a wonderful person. Looking forward to viewing your other videos and podcasts. Cheers Joe
These are the videos that the algorithm needs to be rewarding and putting on the front of youtube! You, sir, have created and documented a beautiful piece of art and I never would have known about Steve had you not created this. Thank you.
Thank you - kind of you to say. They're very gentle films, much like a lot of the material I produce I think; not necessarily the whizz and bang of those YT usually promotes - but I'm happy you now know Steve, the gentle, amazing, natural, gifted, generous man and photographer that he was.
Simply beautiful and moving Neale. I only met Steve once at a street photography meet up in London this February. He seemed a lovely man and I wish I had had chance to get to know him better. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Nothing short of brilliant!. What an incredible insight the extraordinary life of a very talented and humble man. Thankyou for sharing this with the world!
Thank you Ben for your kind comment. It would thrill his family to know people are still listening to Steve's words and understanding his approach to this amazing photographic world!
It's taken me almost a year to work up to watching this Neale as I knew the conclusion of the piece. I only met Steve 'The Dude' Shipman once, briefly for a few days at an event in Edinburgh. This just confirmed what I always thought and that is what a lovely man he was. Incredibly emotive film regardless of the very minor connection I have to the subject.
Yes it is indeed a tough piece if you know the outcome. I think he'd have liked 'The Dude' reference! Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
What a lovely film (and man). It's always sad when you find a "new" photographer, only to find out at the end of the video that he recently died. These kinds of videos inspires me so much and have a tendency to cure my gear acquisition syndrome(at least for a few days).
@@photowalk.podcast I understand that. On the flip-side, I did discover your channel yesterday and it was a real treat :-) I spent a few hours last night, watching some of your videos and the quality level is REALLY good. I'm so happy on the rare occasions when I find someone that doesn't take the easy way and spit out gear reviews twice a week but instead take the time to bring content. I especially love your portraits of photographers.
Thank you so much for this. It's a fabulous interview of an utterly charming man. And it is such a joy to hear him speak in that gentle voice again. xx
I'll break it to you right away: I cried listening to this episode of the podcast. Yes, I cried. I don't know why exactly, but the word that comes to mind is: Essence. So many essential elements came together for me in this story: decisive moment, being humble and kind, photography as a way of capturing people's true self, simple and elegant composition and lighting. Thank you so much for putting this together so beautifully. So glad to have met you in Bath at the Fuji X conference. Please make me cry more often. :)
Thank you Peter for your comment. Getting comments like this, particularly so thought out drive me to want to make more - although the podcast is going to be my focus for interviews moving ahead. It was an honour being afforded the time by Steve particularly at such a juncture in his life where he had so many other things to think about. It was good to meet you too in Bath. Kindest, Neale
Thank you Paul, much appreciated. Miss being able to just call Steve, but there's a comfort to me personally being able to see him smile back out of this film.
I came across Steve's blog long time ago when he started to feel bad. I wrote him every time he posted news about his condition trying to cheer him up. What a talent, what a guy. Your video gave me the oportunity to see him "live", speaking his mind out, telling everybody his story. It was fantastic @@photowalk.podcast . By the way I just recently discovered your channel, can't remember if it was Kevin Mullins who led me to it. Your content is superb. Thank you for taking the time.

I have looked to this man for inspiration for years and only today do I hear the news. Great film.
Sorry you learned this way, but I hope seeing him talking and sharing helped.
Lovely - still so much the friend I recall from school 52 years ago...and I remember the church hall disco.
I am the richer for having known him for a short time. You're far wealthier for having lived the stories.
