      Also, Tesla ranked 25 out of 29 in reliability. They did score 100+ in the CR road test score and consumer satisfaction. I've owned 3 Mazdas myself.

      you cannot really extend Chevy reliability on Bolt here. battery, most of the software and drivetrain is not made by GM. only time will tell if Bolt is on par with other EVs in terms of reliability.

    It's a nice little car, but let's not compare it to a Model 3. The Model 3 looks 911 pretty, the Bolt looks like a a prettier i3, which is not exactly a looker to put it politely. The big problem is that it's losing $9k a car due to the fact that GM doesn't have a gigafactory or as far as we know ANY INTENTION to build one. Without a gigafactory the battery cost is going to always mean the car is sold at a loss. Tesla is so far ahead of GM when it comes to EVs. 600k pre-orders, with zero spent on advertising. How much has GM spent advertising the Bolt to sell 2000 cars? When you look at all the anti Tesla stuff and all the Pro Tesla stuff and weigh up all the good and bad points, you'd have to be litterally insane to bet against Tesla at this point. PS. Truly great channel by the way

      Hello, Larry Smith, still trolling Tesla I see. Bolt generations ahead of the Model 3? Really? Bolt 4WD? Self-drive? Software updates? Charging network? What I'm impressed with you is the number of bogus names you think of...my compliments.

      waaaaiiiit how is model 3 anything like 911...911 makes model 3 lookin like prius

    • @justsomeguy934
      @justsomeguy934 7 лет назад +4

      Larry, the Model 3 easily out-classes the 911. Some versions will be faster and all Teslas are more practical then the 911. The 911 is a stretch VW Beetle from the bygone days of rear-engine cars.

    • @kslee421
      @kslee421 7 лет назад +3

      EV Owner lol ok. not sure how 30k car can out class a 100k car but im sure u r right

    • @justsomeguy934
      @justsomeguy934 7 лет назад +3

      Larry, some versions will be faster than many 100K cars. More storage and cabin space. Better build quality and ultra reliability. Continual updates via WiFi, so the car gets better after you own it. Need any more, or do you want to pay $100K for a decades-old VW design?

    The Model 3 will outsell the Chevy Bolt in the USA for 2017 and every year going forward.
    That makes the Model 3 the auto story of the year.

      Hi, Larry Smith! You might want to change your comments (you delete them from time to time) as Tesla is shutting down their factory this month (for a week) to switch over and start making the Model 3. Please make comments about the Chevy charging network...oh wait, there isn't one.

      EV Owner, Model 3 definetly the car of the year for 2018, unless at the end of 2017 Nissan releases "Leaf 2.0" with 200+ range, true L3 self driving and lower price than Model 3 with similar capabilities.

      Robert Blackford No need to go into an outdated dealer, you can order it online, yes currently there is a long wait for a Model 3 because it craps on this piece of rubbish , Don't forget if you want to take your Tesla out there are thousands of charging stations., how stupid companies like Chevy lose money making the Bolt so they get offsets for selling zero emission cars so they can produce more ICE cars, plain stupidity

    • @-PORK-CHOP-
      @-PORK-CHOP- 6 лет назад +1

      Robert Blackford, Yes but they are in the initial stages of building infrastructure, the other manufacturers already have their production facilities, Tesla is still building facilities such as Giga factories R&D, Superchargers etc, the Giga factory cost $5 Billion to build, can you tell me any other car manufacturer in the world could set aside $5 Billion just to build one factor and still pull a profit ? so of course they will be losing money and why they need to get the Model 3's delivered to customers ASAP, one problem with the 3 was the battery pack.
      The manufacturing process at Tesla's Gigafactory 1 held Model 3 production back, Tesla had to take over part of the manufacturing process from suppliers and redesign the process, this is all part of the teething process of any new company and new product.
      You need to remember Tesla's are basically at the cutting edge of Technology, the other EV'S are nowhere near as complicated as a Tesla, and none of the other manufacturers are investing in infrastructure, they just produce a vehicle then say see you later charge it wherever you can it's your problem.
      If it wasn't for Tesla, no other manufacturer would have bothered to consider the technology, they would have only followed VW line and tricked everyone into thinking the car was environmental, Anyway irrespective of if you like the technology or not EURO emission standards will kill off the ICE sooner rather than later.

      Ralph McMahan well amazon actually i think last year for the first time reported profits. The first thing you do when you report profits is pay taxes. Tesla is expanding the freemont factory and building gigafactory in Nevada. Not making profits and not reporting profits its 2 completely different things. Apple and google report a lot of profits because the money is overseas

      Jonathan Dittmar spark ev cost is 25000$ with 19kw battery and goes 82 miles. On the market just to compete with the leaf. Bolt is much bigger, much more tech in it and the battery is 60kw, 3 times bigger. And msrp only 10000$ more and it's profitable?

      “I no longer have access to General Motors figures, but I would be surprised and shocked if the 200-mile electric Bolt is going to make money,” stated Lutz (this was at an Automotive News roundtable back in August). “You look at the cost per kilowatt hour of batteries and the number of kilowatt hours they have got in there and then you look at the selling price. It’s just not going to work.”

Buttons are just more efficient in that 1) you don't have to dig through the screens 2) you can change settings without taking your eyes off the road 3) prettier 4) you have a giant speed gauge instead of a tiny font on the screen that you have to turn your head to take your eyes off the road to hunt for it.

    • @jimliu2560
      @jimliu2560 7 лет назад

      Ari Spelius Wait, you can disable autobraking? I thought it is not possible (in general) to turn off safety systems; like (automatic) seat belts, airbag, etc.

    • @arispelius600
      @arispelius600 7 лет назад

      jim liu in Chevy you can set the auto breaking system to either warn you that a collision is about to occur, warn you and auto break, or not trigger. The ability to turn off the system is there in case the system is triggering when not needed. You can also disable the pedestrian collision breaking system for the same reason. I don't recommend disabling the system unless it is malfunctioning. I suspect that as the system becomes less likely to trigger when not needed, the automakers will make these systems unable to disable.

    Great show! One thing about the speedometer. You wondered why they went so high? Aside from the marketing (my car registers 160), there is a calibration aspect called range and range will contain multiplicative error. All speedos start at 0 mph, but as they progress up the scale, error starts to show-all gauges do. What we want is as accurate as we can get so the lower in the range our usable speeds are, the more likely; or closer to accurate the reading. Back in the days of the 80 mph gauge, we were near the top of the range of the devise, and, therefore, at the max error. Now, there are tricks that can be employed to hide the upper range but then you enter the marketing end of the issue. Another consideration is that, if you build in the accuracy, you are producing a more robust gauge allowing it to enjoy a longer lifespan; and who wouldn't like that?

    I don't usually like to disagree with Cooley but here in the UK almost all the cars sold here are manual and we've got an EU regulation that says all new cars need to have it by November 2018. Loads of new cars brought to the market today have a plethora of these AEB systems as standard and they're all available on manual cars. Things like adaptive cruise control are (kinda obviously) limited to automatic cars.

      Because they're cheaper to buy, cheaper to fix, and actually take skill to drive properly. Unlike Americans that get drivers licenses from a cereal box, plop into any old slushbox car and think they "know how to drive".

    • @dansanger5340
      @dansanger5340 7 лет назад +3

      It used to be the case that manuals were significantly more efficient than automatics, but with modern cars they are comparable. Sometimes the automatic is even more efficient. And, I personally have never had an automatic or manual go out, so it's not something I worry about.
      I drove a manual for over ten years, so it's not a question of skill. Manuals are more hassle than they're worth. I didn't miss it for a second when I switched to automatic. In real life, winding country roads are an insignificant percentage of driving. Manuals really lose their appeal in stop-and-go traffic.
      Regardless, multi-speed transmissions of any type are an artifact of the narrow torque curve of the internal combustion engine. I can't wait to see both types disappear.

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 7 лет назад +3

      I don't know, I've been driving manual cars only since 1996. Since 2001 I've had an Integra GSR manual with lightweight 8 pound flywheel, and I get along just fine with it. Yeah my wife's 2014 Mazda CX-5 with 6-speed auto is nice, and I enjoy driving that car, but I still love my manual gearbox. If I ever replace the Integra it has to have manual. It's the only thing that makes an otherwise mundane commute a little more fun.

Traditional car reviewers struggle to properly review electric cars out of lack of knowledge and also general dislike to these cars which seem to be "soulless" compared with gas cars. Jonathan Dittmar: Interesting. For an automatic, I can see that (before the era of paddle shifters, "drivesport" transmission mode, etc).
      However for a manual transmission, the tach would seem to be a very logical, perhaps even essential piece of equipment for a driver who wants to get more performance from the car.

      A lot of older cars don't have tachs even with manual in North America, and many still don't overseas. My 89 Camry 5-speed didn't. Probably because it was during the time when lots of people knew how to drive standard well, because I never needed a tach in my Camry to know when to shift yet I was perfectly fine with that.

    He didn't mention that GM seems to coming back in the diesel game. The Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox, and GMC Terrain will offer a diesel engine in a year or so.

    • @JD-yx7be
      @JD-yx7be 7 лет назад +1

      Elliott Manning the volt is actually cheaper then the cruze diesel so i don't know why gm even bothered with a new cruze diesel.

    • @elliottmanning4116
      @elliottmanning4116 7 лет назад +3

      Fuel economy I guess. If a driver takes lots of long highway trips, the Diesel Cruze will get better gas mileage then a Volt. A Volt is more of a city car.

    • @JD-yx7be
      @JD-yx7be 7 лет назад +1

      Elliott Manning diesel fuel is more expensive and need exhaust fuild to be refilled. i drive a diesel f250 so unless you are towing often you will not save a cent over the extra cost of the engine.

    • @elliottmanning4116
      @elliottmanning4116 7 лет назад

      Jonathan Dittmar With diesel or hybrid powertrains, there is always the question of will the additional costs upfront will be worth it in the long run.

    • @JD-yx7be
      @JD-yx7be 7 лет назад

      Elliott Manning at least with a plug in you get more reliability because they have a much simpler transmission and the engine is not running the entire time. A diesel is very expensive to repair especially if the emissions systems are the problem.

    No one talks about the effects to the environment from making the batteries and disposing of them. There is also the crux of power from power plants is generated by fusel fuels. So the carbon foot print for an electric car is the same as a gas car with 30MPG.

      Why exactly someone would want to "dispose" of them? Even when the battery have exceded its usefull life in a car, you still have a powerfull self contained battery pack for other uses, like home storage if you have solar panel or other mean of producing energy at home. Even with a genset it make sense. Run it twice a week (two hours a day if you can't unplug you microwave oven, air conditionner ...), charge the battery, enjoy the silence the rest of the time in your cabin in the woods.
      And if you don't, the metal in it is not goneanywhere. The lithium, nickel, whatever, is still in there, it still have the value of it's made of.
      So, no one is talking about the issues of making and disposing of them because even shot to death a battery is valuable. No landfill for nickel or lithium battery. Beside, last time i check an ICE vehicle also use a huge amount of lubricants, coolant fluid and other to works over it's lifetime, much more than an EV.

    If we and our governments want to convert the auto fleet to lower CO2 emissions faster (a lot faster). Get some rear wheel electric hub motor conversion kits out that will move a petrol car around to neighborhood errands for 20 miles or so. Set it up on a low $ affordable lease or sale. Make it efficient enough to offset the gas that would have been burned to pay for itself plus a little incentive savings.
    If you watch your instantaneous MPG you know you burn much of your fuel on launching your car from a red light or stop sign. The electric hub motor boost would knock that number way down.
    I know these things are in development and have seen some here on RUclips.

    I'll throw in my two cents into this. I believe the reason that Mazda will sell the cx-5 with a diesel is because it will be already on sale in Europe. They are testing the water and if it fails in the USA then it won't be a massive R&D loss, just a logistical one. In relation to the Mazda autonomous brake, it does stall the engine if it's a manual. My Mazda 3 thought that I was going to hit a parking barrier and all hell broke loose, engine stalled and no damage. It's main function is for slow bumper shunts such at a roundabout. Oh, my Mazda is a diesel which is great to drive but the DPF cycle is a pain sometimes.
