EMBN always seem to go to this repair service who don't repair Shimano but ignore e-motorrepairs up in Barrow On Furness who are apparently the UK's biggest ebike motor repair company and DO repair Shimano motors & have pics of loads of EP8s etc being repaired on their insta page. It would also be worthwhile if you had gone through the secondhand position of each motor manufacturer one by one as their warranty positions vary. Due to due diligence by users on the EMTB forums and despite Madison, the Shimano importer saying otherwise, Shimano warranty IS covered for second hand motors as long as you have the original receipt and it's within warranty period (2 years). Specialized also allow transfer of warranty (also 2 years except for that dodgy batch of Brose motors (mark 2?) which I think is 4 or 5) but I don't know about Yamaha, Bosch, Brose etc This is the kind of info I hoped you'd look into as this is about buying a second hand emtb and is very important info. At an average cost of a grand for a new replacement motor I think this is the key info in buying a used bike for peace of mind. I'm up on all this info as I just bought one! I had to dig into all this to find out about warranty & repairs and it really didn't take long. I also discovered that Polini the Italian motor brand that I hadn't heard much about, not only make their motors easy to repair but will also supply all the parts for you to do the repairs at home. That's the kind of transparency we need from every manufacturer. Right to repair etc etc.

Thanks for the info about the place in Barrow on Furness, I didn't know about them. I've heard good things about Polini being repairable. It seems warranty varies a lot on different motors and there's also non official answers being given that some motor manufacturers want you back riding their motors on the trails as soon as possible, and will therefore help you with a low cost out of warranty fix. Hopefully it's something that all motor manufacturers are working on getting a plan for- out of warranty repairs.
      Cheers, Neil

I'm just here to listen to you talk about how awesome my bike is. Although mine came with SLX brakes which have performed well. Tip: All that goo at the front on the downtube above the battery is adhesive from fork bumpers that have fallen off. It's a common problem. Mine came off within two weeks. Fortuanately, I didn't lose them. If you want them, clean off the adhesive (which took me forever -- WD-40 ended up being the magic elixir over all the other purpose-made removers I had) and use 3M VHB tape on the new bumpers. Mine have been rock solid since then (about 1200 miles).

More depressing with this is how the heck can you hope to sell an eBike after you have had 3-5 good years out of it. Dam things are nearly a throwaway frame as no secondhand buyer is going to then fork out for a new motor and battery. Assuming they can even be bought 5 years after the original release of the bike. Its even worse if you get something plagued with motor issues from the start like many of those stuck with a popular light eBike motor brand that has become a warranty nightmare to keep the bike running at all. Seems none of these motors were ever really intended to go into mountain bikes.

Yes. Agree. Bikes have come down so much from what they were. A bike that someone bought a couple years ago for 8000$ is now 5000$ new and it seems like you should be able to sell your used 8000$ for 5000$ but it's just not the case. Its worth 2500-3000$ in my opinion. You'd be crazy to buy a used one in this environment. And in another month or two you'll be able to buy a nice new gas gas or the like for peanuts

This video was perfect confirmation, to stop even considering buying an Ebike.
From what the repairman said, water ingress is guaranteed at some point and anything electrical doesn’t bide well with water contact. How can that Marin bike be a good buy, when it’s missing a fork bump stop, leaving an opening for water to gather inside the frame.
I’ve tried hard to find positives, that outweigh negatives with Ebikes. The overall impression is, unless you have deep pockets of cash to maintain an Ebike, then better off staying clear.
Thanks to The Don for this video. All the best

    • @buzzbartholomew3714

Water ingress can be avoided by:
      Not riding through deep water.
      Not jet washing the motor.
Not carried on a car in the wet without the motor covered.
Additionally, I coat all the electronic connections with ACF50 & slap some waterproof grease around all the seals & bearings.

Hi, I bought a 2 year old cube stereo hybrid 140 base model at a bargain price from the original owner with book, keys and original shop receipt with 2000km on it. It was super clean and by the looks of it, it didn’t have a hard life. Literally as soon as I’d got it, I started upgrading virtually everything other than the frame and the motor to the point where it now has cost me more in parts than the original bike 😂.
Ran it for another 1000km (have other bikes to ride also) and noticed the crank bearings were getting a little noisy. Sent my motor off to the e-bike motor repair centre and am currently waiting on its return. I sold everything that I’d taken off the bike to go towards cost of replacements and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. The bike is now exactly how I wanted it to be and is a blast to ride.

Facecrock market place is swamped with stolen bikes.. and with many manufacturers just having a QR code sticker instead of actual frame numbers, they make it all to easy for thieving c-nuts to pull them off and sell the bikes on.

Personally, I’m always more worried by battery life. When a model is discontinued it’s inevitable that finding a new battery once you can’t get many miles between charges will be the most difficult problem to solve. If there were companies available that could recondition battery units by installing new cells it would definitely improve the second hand market. Maybe a video exploring battery internals would be helpful?

Several pre-owned eMTBs were not acquired due to concerns regarding the Shimano EP8 motor. While acknowledging the motor's performance, uncertainties regarding potential future maintenance issues hindered the purchasing decisions. Enhanced Shimano support for repair centers, including guidance on EP8 motor pre-failure inspections, would significantly improve confidence in the used bicycle market and potentially increase sales volume.

I bought my only full e-mtb used from an ex-rental, online. A bit of a crazy move which I wouldn't do again. New price, 4500€, selling 2000€ with motor warranty. Luckily I was able to claim the warranty at a local shop because the motor (Bosch) was completely worn out. On my own I also replaced chain, Haibike proprietary, crazy expensive 16 teeth chainring, the cassette. Later on I had to do all the bearings of the suspension linkage anew, and of course fork and rear damper. At the end I spent another 1000€. Now it's actually a good bike, however next time I plan to buy used, I will want to ride it, check the chain wear and overall shape before committing. Before me, this bike was being kept in a very poor condition. However, I think buying used is a good choice if you don't care about fancy latest trend and you are knowledgeable in minor repairs (see above about the chain wear).

"EMTB's are the best winter training bike!" its this kind of statement that cracks me up . The ONE thing no EMTB can stand is major water/fine silt exposure.
Why would one be the best in winter?
A friend rode his 10K Orbea EMTB thru a deep-ish creek ahead of me. One time he did that, the bike started making the noise right away.
The grit in bearings noise. I dunno how long its got to rebuild now but it seems funny to sell a "Mt Bike" with a motor system that is very vulnerable to normal off road usage.
I think if you are given a new bike to use regularly for advertisement purposes none of this matter,s the bike will be only a memory very soon.
If you paid your 7 or 10K its a different thing. I recognize my EMTB is fragile so I dont ride it in water, period. I wash it gently.

I bought a 2022 Trek Rail 5 custom with 800 miles on the clock for £3.5k 18 months ago and apart from the seller lying through his teeth, it’s been a brilliant bike.
    My advice:
    1. Never believe the word of a (private) seller.
    2. Always verify the documentation that came with the bike. Especially the original purchase receipt and full diagnostic report on both the motor and the battery.
    3. Budget at least £400 in fully servicing the bike by a pro bike mechanic. All the suspension bearings on my bike were rusted through.
    4. Don’t buy a Shimano second hand.
I bought my very first e-MTB round the corner from Trailhead at DMC in Shrewsbury. If you can get a refurbished EMTB from a shop instead of a private sale, it’s gonna come with a load of backup and aftersales service from the shop , either way the risk is always gonna be loaded onto the buyer, so buyer beware.

Bought an Amflow a couple of months ago and have tried selling it in various ways, but the only interested parties have been a couple of actual mountain bikers who expected to pay £200 and teenagers who seem to think it will have a throttle and ask how fast it will go, they're completely baffled when you tell them you have to pedal it. I think I'll end up giving it away within the family but it's disappointing not to be able to get something for it : ( Certainly makes me think twice about changing bike in the future, this one is going to have to last me 10 years now.

I have 2 ebikes, both 2019 Specialized Turbo Levo of similar mileage. The issue I came across on one of them was the motor having noticeably lower power, battery lasts about 30% less and the little push assist button intermittently not working on one of them, both batteries show as 100% health on the app. I keep them both indoors and look after them but one has multiple issues and the other has so far been faultless. What I am trying to say is there might be 2 identical used ebikes side by side and you wouldn't be able to tell which one is working fine and which one has issues. I have upgraded both bikes so the chain, tyres etc look great and on a short ride on a street you wouldn't know which one has the intermittent fault.

You can buy neoprene motor covers for some bikes, but even something as simple as a plastic bag wrapped around the motor will help. You don't have to keep the motor dry, you only have to stop the air pressure forcing the water spray from the car and tyres in past the bearing seals. It does not take too much effort and is only needed if you are traveling on wet roads.

Its the selling of a used EMTB that tends to be a bad deal, if you bought it when prices were up.
Prices now a days make a 2 year old bike not worth much. No matter what you bought it was out dated as soon as it was built.
Technology marches on and buyers want latest tech. Im just going to ride what I have.
And you wonder, did the owner ride it under water, or wash it so hard there's water/soap in the motor?
It only takes a moment to do damage. Sealing the motors on EMTB so far hasnt gone well.

First ask why embt's are so badly designed with unsealed bearings on housings that also contain electronics. Both mechanical and electronic components fail when water enters. Combine this with using Li-ion batteries that readily explode instead of safe LiPo types and you have a recipe for more than an uncomfortable ride. Engineering of this calibre would be ruinous for any other industry, ebikers continue to be taken to the cleaners.

AFAIK it is not possible to repair the Bosch batteries. Anyway, you should ask, before buying, to get a battery readout, where you can see also the battery SOH. As long as it is above 90%, you are good to go. Of course check that the original charger is available. Lack of original charger is a giveaway of a stolen bike and non-OEM chargers may damage the battery.

Ceramic are not a great bearing when in a high grit/dirt environment and they are not usually available with seals either. Stainless bearings would have to be slightly larger in size to offer the same strength, this would add a little extra weight to the motor. If you consider manufacturers are using magnesium screws to save a gram or two, so fitting heavy bearings is a real no, no, in the motor race for supremacy.

Bafang will sell me a 350w motor for 300 euros excluding shipping, I own the 750w version and its already served me for about 12K miles needing regreasing in between and I replaced a pinion gear on the motor myself.
I can then buy a high end old 26er, slap that motor on, mount my battery in the triangle or another place, and Ill be done for about 2K if you are getting a really good second hand mountainbike to build upon.
Bosch motor, bosch battery, bosch service center, proprietary everything.
It just doesnt make sense, the whole eco system is designed to make money money money, not to provide the end user with the best product.
Its the same with regular mtbing, 3K for a hardtail with a coil fork....... Manufacturing processes have never been more streamlined yet bikes cost more than back in the late 90s early 2000s where the industry was on a come up.
Channels like yours make it seem like these prices are normal and the end consumers, us, are sick of it.
Deore groupset will run me about 300 to 400 euros!
Aliexpress special comes down to about 150 including a clutch derailleur, sure I might have to get a new 30 euro Chinese casette a lot earlier than lets say an SLX one, but Ill be laughing all the way to the ali order button knowing Im not overpaying by sometimes over more than 100 percent on something that obviously only costs that much cause it gets Shimano stamped on there.
