A teacher at the time told me the song was about / 'from' Dutch sailors in the 17th century or something, presumably stuck on a remote location without hope. 'What shall we drink the next 7 days, let's open a new cask, then we'll have enough for everybody. '. I was about 8 years old back then. I thought the melody was kind of sad. Nowadays it sort of sounds like a protest song too. 'We shall work together...', 'We shall fight together...'.
I was curious, so I googled. The melody and rhyme scheme are from northern France, 1920's. Two teens sung songs in their local language while working on the fields. They sung on weddings too. One day one of them had a can of cider. They improvised a song, which became this. "Son ar chistr" / 'The Cider Song'. Their pastor encouraged them to write it down. Obviously my teacher was wrong, it really is a drinking song.
