- Dal rice- isn’t it one of the most comforting meals?
My mom, undoubtedly makes the BEST DAL EVER! Hands down, no competition there. There are cousins/relatives who request her to make it every time they visit. It’s just so delicious, and funny part is that she keeps it crazy simple. But I can’t get it right no matter how hard I try! And then there’s @kiran.lobo who makes the second best, and I’m jealous. I’ve been cooking far longer than him and he gets it better how? :/
But I’m not complaining as I get to eat it☺️
So here’s my recipe inspired by these two loves of my life!❤️
Ingredients I used:
- 1 cup toor dal, washed and soaked in water for 15-20 mins + water for boiling
- 1 onion, roughly chopped
- 1 large tomato, roughly chopped
- 2 to 3 green chillies, slit as shown
- 1/2 inch ginger, finely chopped
- 2 to 3 cloves of garlic, mashed roughly
- 1 sprig of curry leaves
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- pinch of hing
- salt
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- generous amount of coriander leaves (or as preferred)
Procedure:
- Cook soaked dal in a pressure cooker (I use double the quantity of water but really depends on your pressure cooker too) along with chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies and ginger.
- Once done, mash it up with a ladle.
- Heat oil in a pan and give tadka with mustard seeds, cumin seeds, garlic and curry leaves.
- Fry till the garlic has changed colour and add your cooked dal.
- Add cooked dal, water (if and as needed), salt and turmeric and give it a good boil.
- Once boiled garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve with hot rice and any sides of your choice, pickle, papad. Top it with ghee, and enjoy!

I add turmeric in the pressure cooker. It will give more appealing colour to it and add cumine seeds also.
Cumin should be fried in tadka.. Not boiled with dal

My mom says that good daal has lots of garlic which must be crushed and never chopped. So this recipe is on point!ll
Here is something to try Add the turmeric either in tadka Or when boiling the daal
Better during boiling .
Or it will leave lil bitterness if neither boiled nor fried. More preferably during boiling add turmeric

All good for my taste- except that no need for ginger, garlic,onion and no turmeric while garnishing. Will be good to add it before you put in cooker.
Or add onions, ginger garlic turmeric to tadka and then pour mashed Dal 😁. Some hing would bring a great flavor as well!

Boil daal with salt n turmeric
Heat some mustard oil(must) in a pan, 2 crushed garlic (with skin mind you), Panch foran, curry leaves and slit green chillies... Then pour in the boiled daal. That's it!
It's better paired with rice.

We add some jaggery and tamarind, boiled peanuts in our Gujarati daal without onion garlic.....

Haven't you extract/throw the froth which floats while boiling daal in open kadai...but it never happens when you use pressure cooker....Today most of the arthritis problem arises due to this type of daal which increases uric acid in the body.

One day try daal without cumin seed.. only with garlic or garlic ginger and add onion with other veg.. taste will be better and different. Or if u want to cumin seed then add ofcourse one dry red cilly and bay leaf.. after adding dal and veg also add only some ginger.. here don't add onion and garlic.

I do the same only additional thing is I add fresh coconut with black pepper ( grind with water ) & add to dal & boil it . 👍 this is our traditional kokani style

Add turmeric in cooker! It will give excellent colour and healthwise it will not let gas in stomach as its antibiotic
