  • Janine, traveling with her husband Marcel on a bus through a desolate, sandy plateau, feels isolated and uncomfortable amid the cold and heavy silence. The bus, filled with Arab passengers shrouded in burnooses, struggles through the stony landscape as sand scratches against the windows. Janine reflects on her past and her marriage to Marcel, a man whose passion for business has left her feeling lonely and unfulfilled. Despite the harsh conditions and her growing sense of discontent, Janine finds a ......

This story is uncanny , I once took a bus from Fez to Errachidia in Morocco, it was winter and there was snow in the Atlas Mountains especially at Rich where the King had his winter palace, from Fez down to Errachidia the bus meandered through stark remote mountain scapes plateaus and valleys on the eastern side of the Atlas Mountains, it was a remarkable journey. There were no western tourists on the bus and it was packed with locals, they were squatting on the floor as the seats filled up and every stop saw another group of people trying to get on.
There was a spectacular sun set about two hours before arrival and the colours and shades in this stark endless mountain vista was beautiful . I arrived in Errachidia at about 8 o’clock at night it was still warm and dusty from there having been a hot day. It was most welcome relief to get off that hard benched bus that I’d been on since about 7 o’clock that morning . I found a hotel and got myself sorted for the night. The next day was a beautiful bright blue sparkling day and I decide to take a walk , Errachidia is the last town on the main road in the sub Sahara, beyond it is the beginnings of the Sahara dessert. The road comes down from the north across the eastern Atlas and down to Errachidia where it takes a sharp turn and heads back west to Quarzazat Tarrandout and Agadir. I walked for two hours out of town , the road disappeared and I was walking in what looked like a building site strewn with rubble and weeds. I could see the town behind me so no danger of getting lost and I could see the Atlas Mountains in the distance behind the town . As I walked it became quieter and quieter until the only sound I was aware of was the rustle of my clothes and my breathing, I heard a fly going past with a Doppler effect , I looked back at the mountains and had no idea how far or near they were, they were either small foothills and very close or massive mountains far away , just for one second there was a blinding cathartic moment where I understood I was a traveller in time and space, for that one moment in what felt like a jolt of light it was just me time and space , I wrote a letter to my sister perched on a boulder and walked back into town . Did I have the fire of enlightenment blazing from my eyes , no not really, but it happened

“La Femme adultère” is a short story by Albert Camus, first published in 1957 in the collection “Exile and the Kingdom.” The story follows Janine, a middle-aged woman who travels with her husband Marcel, a fabric merchant, through the Algerian desert. Their marriage is marked by emotional distance and a lack of communication, leading Janine to feel increasingly alienated and dissatisfied with her life.
One night, during their trip, Janine climbs to the terrace of the fort a😊nd is overwhelmed by the vastness and majesty of the desert. This encounter offers her a profound spiritual and emotional revelation, providing a fleeting sense of freedom and connection to something greater than herself. The desert represents the escape and liberation Janine deeply yearns for in her monotonous life.
The story explores themes of alienation, the search for freedom, and the transcendence found in nature. Janine’s experience with the desert serves as a moment of transcendence from her daily existence. Despite returning to her husband, the experience leaves an indelible mark on her, and the story concludes without a clear resolution, leaving Janine’s future and the impact of her experience open to interpretation.

It is like listening to the explanation of a cubist painting: the explanation is usually more creative than what it purports to explain.
