Literally applied this tip to my deadlift and today and set a huge rep PR that I wasn't even gonna go for at first. I get a big breath, lock in my lats, start the pull by pushing the floor away and as soon as I break the floor I used this cue to "fuck the bar" an push my hips through! Made such a huge difference, my deadlifts felt so good and I knew I was using the right muscles. Hit 425lbs for 4 reps from a dead stop and previous best was only 2 at that weight. Thanks Coach Joe! 💪
I never understood the legpress cue or pushing the floor away cue. I tried it many times, but for me the deadlift feels nothing like it and could not even begin to feel like I was doing it. Anyone else?
@@marknum545 One of the biggest feelings you have to get with that leg press analogy is something I've heard Dave call "the wedge". Only way I can describe it is the perfect angle between the bar, your torso and your legs when you go to apply leg drive. When you find it, you can just concentrate on pushing with your legs while holding your back tight and finishing the lift by bringing your hips through
Tons of respect for you Joe. You’re a pro; knowing when to go to others for help defines strength. Great lessons on all levels being taught here. And to Sam’s comment …my bar will never be the same. Thanks Sam 👍
Some people can be so knowledgeable but struggle to teach. It’s a special skill when someone is able to relay their knowledge to others. That’s what the elitefts crew are so good at.
No shit “F*caked the bar” during my Deadlifts today and they get so much cleaner, a lot more power… I’ve been deadlifting for years and have never heard this command. I’ve always practiced the “push the earth away” and “proud chest” but this is pure training gold! THANK YOU!
Build that booty baby! Deadlift technique is probably something that you can talk to Martins about in the near future. From what I recall, martins takes a much different approach to building strength than most. Where most folks, like Sam here, is recommending many singles. Martins builds strength very slowly over a 6 month period, starting with high rep low weight tempo movements, then adding weight but still going for high reps, then slowly reducing the reps until competition day where he will do his only 1 rep max.
Definitely want of the best videos I have seen as far deadlifting and fixing issues. I have the same issue being spoke about here and have absolutely learned some things here
Man this sounds like exactly what has been limiting/keeping me from the deadlift.....well other than hurting my taint. I want to go load up a bar and try to focus on this now!
Looking forward to my next deadlift session now... I've always only felt it in my low back, never the glutes, and I'm definitely not building up tension like that initially..
I can't wait to try this out. I'm always nervous on deadlift day because of lower back pain. I get crazy cramps in my erectors and feel like I have lay down or something to get them to calm down between sets. And sometimes have to quit early cus it gets so bad, but I'm really hoping this can help me out and get my deadlift going again
Really cool cues there, I feel like I have the same issue I sometime let my lower back take the load instead of my glutes (no pun intented!). Will definitely try it out next deadlifting session!
Glutes and hamstrings tend to be ignored in a lot of physical activities, for the past couple of months I’ve been focusing most of my DL and Squats to utilize those muscles more. And boy has it helped with back pain a lot! And a lot of core work as well.
I totally agree with him. Pull all the slack out of the bar, hearing the click as the barbell contacts the plates, and even bending the bar a tad. Imagine pulling the arms into the lats TIGHT. THEN blast your feet through the floor. You may want to do some really heavy rack pulls to instill that proper upper back and lat muscle memory.
great content! (as usual but even a bit more) I know from watching EliteFTS's content, I can't just take cues they give lifters and assume they are correct for me. But I still felt I learned from this video.
Great video! Deadlifts are an issue for me, so I’m gonna take these tips, and activate my glutes a little more, plus gonna try to stay tight through the lift. Great stuff!
Ima only aiming for 200kegs. But my warm up lately is standing on some timber with feet pretty much together, knees out and hands together in the centre . Working up to 70ish%. It's probably more of a squat lift though😅 But. Seems to make teh glutes feel fired. And the erectors full of blood. Ready for my main deads
"Oh, that's pretty neat!". I can see Mister Joey has also partaken himself on some good neature walks, possibly shaken up some dirt to find all that wildlife.
Whenever you rep I hear the click from not letting the lift go dead and take the slack out every rep stop putting pressure on that injury and success will come fast with rotating your leg
Ques don't help - even worse they are making you ignore the crux of it all : mobility. Do mobility work for your hamstrings, groin and ankles - then you will lift things up from the ground like a baby. It feels amazing when you get into that groove easily. There is zero tension. Your one rep max feels like nothing but you try to add a bit of weight to it and the bar doesn't even move. That is how a deadlift should feel. You can see Thor doing some of that when he was training for his 501kg lift. One of the easiest and essential ones he does is sitting on ground and just spreading your legs like for the splits. You can do one even better than Thor and resist that opening up motion a bit with your hands and do a Warton style stretch which is empirically superior.
Fuck I used to deadlift 495 for 2 and COVID happen and now I’m back to 385 and fat now need to get my shit dialed in and this helped with issues I’ve had
Legs too close, toes need to go outward a bit, and your hitting it quick instead of perfect. Like he said think about the slack he said but don’t pull the slack lean back to get rid of the slack then drive the ass and get those straps off bro. He’s right f that bar lol and don’t push up pull it backwards while u drive your waist. When your toes are there no bueno. I’m 190 and I can pull 700. You’re so much stronger though. If you spread you’re feet 2 inches and put your toes an inch outward so the whole leg gets activated with ass then sit back in the starting hold to release the slack

This tracks with what Dave said during that quick leg workout with juji last time at elitefts.

“Power hump that bar” is now my new favorite Queue Lmao

My best advice when you feel it stop. Done for the day. Don’t risk not competing for being unsafe. We need you to get the title!
I got the same spot in my quad activate muscle the skinny part at your waist. Right leg. I tore mine and built back to same deadlift as you
Looking forward to my next deadlift session now... I've always only felt it in my low back, never the glutes, and I'm definitely not building up tension like that initially..
I was coached with the same cue “ F**k the bar “ simple cue but massively effective
I can't wait to try this out. I'm always nervous on deadlift day because of lower back pain. Joey himself is just sensational
Aggravated taint is what’s kept me from pulling for months. Many thanks guys

Great video. Good cues! Solid coaching Sam!
The feet and toes out to rotate legs more can completely remove the pressure in the hip

I called it !! Lol I knew you needed to keep the strong man thing going !!
I have something similar. Mine is at the origin of the right adductor when I do squats.
Heck yeah. This video actually helped me out a lot as well.
Love watching a good coach and a student truly wanting to learn, great stuff Sam and Joey!

Having deadlift pain now myself. This is helpful
Stumbling across this video could not have come at a more perfect time.
Cant wait till Monday to implement this advice
Damn I learned a lot with this! Gonna start building that tension at the bottom ✅
Great video. Have to see if I can implement this, usually feel my low back load on dreads and not the glutes
im loving these videos, keep it up
Imma try this now. Thanks!

Great video!
This helped more than you know! Thanks!
"Fuck the bar" and prying open a dragons mouth have been the biggest helps in my pulls.
Prying open a dragons mouth? Did you get that from a video & which? I can enc
Vision what you are talking about without even seeing the video.
@@harvestblades Honestly, I got it from my wife. It made things click really well for me
Similar problem when I did a lot of single leg stuff like leg press. Cut it and it went away.
Try a deficit off the ground look up Brian Shaw deadlift he explains the whole thing slow it down tempo
Happy to say I’ve never had any problems with my taint
Excellent. Great video:
Great info and series of videos, stoked to see you kill it at your next comp 🤘🇺🇸

Thanks for this.
Do you ever do switch grip when doing deadlifts? Or are you using hook grips ?
Good stuff!
That's pretty neat
Does coming back to strongman mean endurance goals on the back burner?
Or concurrent?
Whenever you rep I hear the click from not letting the lift go dead and take the slack out every rep stop putting pressure on that injury and success will come fast with rotating your leg
Chris Duffin tells a similar story, of when he learned how to deadlift after tweaked his back before a meet.
They should call your gym “fix your deadlift” house

Fuck the bar! LMAO love it
I see you are in the deadlift nut crusher club too

great fucking stuff thanks
You wouldv'e thought a guy like this could afford to buy a pair of those super padded trainers for his deadlifting.
