  • In this episode I'm hanging out with my long time friend Josh Howard as he is showing us how to turn down your bass without actually turning down with the volume knob.

    Just to be clear, you cannot "add" treble to the sound coming from your pickups, nor can you add more bass. Every component in a guitar control circuit is taking something away from the natural sounds that are produced by your pickups. The control circuit can only take away more or take away less from the pickup signal. It can't add any sound that wasn't already there.

      @@Jhowar04 I stand corrected. What I said in my earlier comment only applies to a passive bass. But, even for passive basses, most people talk about adding treble or bass or adding tone

      @@skybluemarshall Yea, i probably could have been clearer about the difference between a "tone" knob and a "treble" knob. but imo the concept is more important then the details in this case. the concept being the affect that adding and taking away treble frequencies has on a basses sound, predominately in a church music setting. i think that taking the time to over clarify certain things to beginner-intermediate players can sometimes negatively effect the players ability to comprehend to most important part. That's how i am even after playing for most of my life.

      @@Jhowar04 As people who are ending romantic relationships would say, "It's not you, it's me". Ha ha!
      I've probably been spending way too much time, watching videos and reading articles and bass forum posts, in preparation for the modifications that I've been doing to my passive bass.
      If I had a dime for every time someone corrected another commenter about how capacitors, resistors or tone and volume pots don't add anything to a passive guitar circuit, I could buy you A LOT of coffee. Ha ha!

    A trebble knob and a tone knob are 2 different things. a trebble knob is what's on active basses, it can boost or cut the trebble frequencies, while a tone knob can only cut, as you roll it off, it sends frequencies to the ground instead of to the output of the bass, starting from the highest frequencies. so the way it sounds is also different, personally I prefer a tone knob because it sounds more natural to me.
    That aside, he's got some awesome advice!

    • @Jhowar04
      @Jhowar04 5 лет назад +1

      IMO it’s not different enough to make it worth mentioning. Despite the specific differences it doesn’t really affect how you use it on a bass during a gig...it still comes down to “if I want more high end I turn it up, if I want less I turn it down”.

    • @Jhowar04
      @Jhowar04 5 лет назад +1

      Also I know what you mean, even though my bass is active I normally don’t ever have a situation where I add much additional high end

    • @nathanvleugels1
      @nathanvleugels1 5 лет назад +3

      @@Jhowar04 You might be right. I personally feel strongly about the difference because I don't usually like the sound of active basses, I guess that makes me biased.

      nah i get it. and you were more right in your definition then i was literally, it just didnt seem like i needed to be more specific in that area in this video@@nathanvleugels1

    I use Tapewounds and keep my tone knob on bass and amp all the way down and the volume all the way on. Then I use the amp bass 3/4 all the way up and the mids 1/4 of the way up. I like it. But it all depends on what sounds you're going for.

    A tone knob does nothing at 10, not at 5. It's an adjustable low-pass filter and it can only cut off trebble signal. At 10 you get everything your pickup gets, at lower settings you throw away some range of trebble.

  • @brianclinton5720
    @brianclinton5720 Год назад

    You neglected to clarify that the middle of the throw of the knob is only "not adding and not taking away" on an active tone control. Passive basses it is entirely subtractive and the middle will already be dumping a bunch of the natural treble to ground. For some folks out there, "knowing your bass" means first knowing which type of controls you have in order to use them approptiately.

    Josh is the kind of guy that actually preferred to play guitar, hence the 6 strings, but his mother bought him a bass by accident. She had no clue what the difference is between them. Or in other words: loose the bloody 6 string bass and play 4 strings! Or buy a fucking guitar! Playing 6 strings on a BASS guitar is just....stupid!
