  • With way too much property on her hands, schoolteacher Lucy listed her North London, three-bedroom Edwardian home nine months ago…And 90 viewings later, she’s losing hope of ever moving on. The gracious Finchley-area home features original period details, grand rooms and a corner plot on a park, and should be a hit with young, urban families…But the messy, neglected, interiors are making a terrible first impression. The furniture is mismatched, there’s clutter in every corner, and even though she’s twice dropped the price, Lucy’s still waiting…
    Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to turn things around for the unloved home. And while John beefs up the marketing effort, and gets the agent and homeowner back on track, Sofie and the team get busy breathing new life into the cold and dated interiors. Will all their hard work pay off with a sale?

    I bought a house that was a tip in 2009. It was like a garbage dump inside, with nothing working and everything broken. However, I saw PAST that and looked at the room sizes. I more than doubled my money, selling it 5 years later. I don't understand how people cannot see past temporary decor and notice the salient sizes and features of a property. However, if that's the case, so be it. It's lovely to see the room changes on this channel - food for inspiration!

      One house I looked at, the bedroom was a hideous bright yellow and we opened the door to check out the size of the closet and there was an aborted fetus doll in a jar on the shelf. I remember that house from 22 years ago. Sometimes you just can't get around your first impressions of a house. Personally, I can't get around that weird painting in this house. Makes you think there are bad vibes left there from the owners. My friend tells me of a pentagram painted on the floor of a house they looked at. Nope.

      @UnseenSpirit 3 года назад +5

      In 2008 that was still quite a high price for a house when you could buy a 3 bed house for 250k.. The other issue is not always imagination but about time and money. Some people, especially with families may not have that much left after paying for solicitors, stamp duty, transporting furniture etc... And the money/time to decorate.

    Tons of amazing makeover shows out there, but not a lot that show simple, cheap and basic fixes that the average person could tackle.
    Even though there were a lot of design mistakes made still showing how to calm down a house and create more cohesion on a tight budget.

    Bad real estate agent basically. The real estate agent needs to have hard conversations with sellers and tell them that the house won’t sell unless it’s clean and organized. Real estate agent should’ve urge them to get a U-Haul and take half of their crap to storage. I sold real estate for over 30 years and sometimes had to have hard conversations with sellers about cleaning their house or attending to deferred maintenance items or pulling the weeds.

    My issue with the backstory is that the girl and her brother inherited it. Was there a mortgage remaining? If not, what would be the difficulty in maintaining it? They moved into dad’s house thinking they’d save loads on rent.
    Also, why not rent it out and maintain your own living spaces? I am thinking this show is a cheap makeover show that knows very little about real estate while pretending to do so. The primary problem is that homes like this are too segmented and offer no flow. This seems very common in English homes.
    These kids wanted a platform to expedite their cash out on their father’s estate.

    I hear all the people commenting about 'why can't you see past the surface", etc., but presentation matters - it creates an impression and sets a stage that's hard to overcome. One thing I see in common between most of these properties is that they're dirty, unkempt, cluttered, messy, too personalized, and just visually unappealing. There's also the possible smell which is usually not good in houses that are not kept tidy and maintained. And who knows what maintenance issues they'll have with heating systems, the roof, foundation, holes in walls, rotted wood, etc. It just reeks of owners who neglected it and don't care. Keep in mind also, many people don't want to have to move into an expensive place and then spend thousands more redecorating.
