  • Legal services aren’t just for law firms anymore. The Big Four accounting firms started making headway in the industry in the 1980s. While the Enron scandal and subsequent Sarbanes-Oxley Act slowed things down, today the Big Four employ enough lawyers to rank among the largest law firms by headcount. As Bloomberg Law’s Sam Skolnik explains in this video, for law firms “there’s real reason to be concerned about the rise of the Big Four in the legal space.”

Grant Thornton was admonished for holding themselves out as a law firm in a Florida administrative law case before the Division of Administrative Hearings. The case was on behalf of the Saddle Creek Corporation. After they were caught, Grant Thornton tried to correct the record by letter. A lawyer working for Grant refereed the matter to the Florida bar for possible unlicensed practice of law investigation, as required under the rules of ethics for lawyers. He was let go, soon after, by Grant Thornton. Big accounting firms make their own rules.

I wonder if banks could also participate in the provision of legal services.

This aged well. All big 4 have ramped up lawyer recruitment and I reckon they'll start poaching the rainmakers.
