    I use the extended double zep. Its a 5/8 wave with homemade 450 ohm ladder line spaced 1 1/2" apart for the tuning. It has a little more gain over the dipole but only has to be 17 feet off the ground for the 10° take off angle.

    Polarization is irrelevant for skip. Only if you're local does it effect vertical and horizontal. For CB 102 plus 6 inches for the spring. Capacitance will probably be low for automotive so don't cut until you get it installed and check for resonance

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  2 года назад +2

      Yes the polarization shouldn’t matter because when skip happens you’re going to have all sorts of disturbances in the wave but I use it specifically for talking local because I’m not much of a skip talker I don’t have an amplifier

  • @Brainsmachine1

    the interesting thing is you soldered blue side to the ground of the coax and white to the other is this how you establish a ground plane?

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  Год назад

      Yes it’s a counter poise, you can ground it further down the coax if you wish.
      A dipole is a balanced antenna design, but in this case it’s unbalanced like a monopole.

    What would be the best antenna design for 75 mile communications with similar antennae on both sides?

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  Год назад

      Probably a Yagi uda design.
      75 miles is quite a distance with ground waves. You’ll probably need to use an amplifier but a yagi antenna will help tremendously.
      But ar that range it may be better just to invest in a different type of radio.
      2 m with repeaters might be better

      You are correct 108 inches is a half wave

    An incredibly resourceful and highly effective homemade dipole antenna. I appreciate that you first discussed the RF theory involved, as well as the many factors which can greatly impact your SWR. And you were easily able to talk from North Carolina to Pensacola, Florida on a barefoot (I'm assuming 5 Watt?) vintage base radio. I can only imagine the distance you could accomplish with a good linear. I've been searching online for a while for a guide on how to make a high performance antenna with both simplicity and a low cost threshold. Without delay, I am building the exact antenna you made in your video. Are there any special considerations I need to make when using your antenna along with a RM-KL203/P linear amp? My radio is a 1980s Cobra 40 channel base station. Thanks so much for the insight and the.great instructional video.

    • @JohnnyNJones

      I’m sorry about that Shane RUclips did not notify me of your comment.
      The only consideration would be to make sure that your co-axle cable and the wire that you use can with stand whatever power you’re putting into it from the amplifier.
      Check the voltage rating for your coaxial cable and check the voltage rating for your copper AWG size 👍
      Thank you very much for the kind words and I hope you have a great time!

    If we use 110 inch insulated wire and fold it back onto itself using 8 inches at the end, will it still be 110 inches of radiated length, or will it be 102 inches of radiated length,?

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  Год назад

      If you fold it back on itself and it’s uninsulated it should just split the current and should still be fine.
      Of course an increased diameter wire is going to have a lower impedance but all that stuff is not really that important when you’re building a simple dipole.
      If you want to be very scientific with it I’d say start building
      If it’s insulated it can still work because of the induced current.
      However in my experience it can be a little finicky to do that. I’m not sure if it’s the added capacitance through the wires and dialectric being parallel or not.
      I’ll have to look more into that. But hey, give it a shot and see what happens. 👍
      But I would guess you would end up not exactly with 102 or exactly with 110

    • @FloryJohann
      @FloryJohann 7 месяцев назад

      @JohnnyNJones I thing when folding the uninsulated shield over the insulated shield that a unbalance gets even get more unbalanced since since the signal travels one way on the uninsulated shield and then reverses flow and there is a possibility that the signal cancels each other out on that side of the dipole and this should get it more to be unbalanced and with it gets it more finiky. So you may need a balun etc to bring it back into balance

    Strip the jacket cover off of the coax so you have just over 105 inches of shield showing (This is a bit long for later trimming). Carefully loosen the shield by compressing in on itself and turn in inside out like a sock. Pull, push, and maneuver the shield over the coax jacket, turning inside out (again, like a sock) all the way. What you have now is 105 inches of center, and 105 of the shield pulled over the jacket. The antenna is 210 " long at this point. You have a dipole that can be hung vertically. This is the same as an Antron 99, or a Bigstick.
    To adjust SWR, Carefully trim the length and slide braid up the jacket to shorten it. etc. Make them match. An inch or so makes a big difference. Once SWR is good, wrap the braid with tape sticking it to the coax jacket.
    For feedline length. it is important use odd multiples of 1/4 wavelength considering the velocity factor. I normal just put a connector at the very bottom (UHF female), and slide this inside of a fishing rod (20' crappie type). Or PVC. But this can be hung from the tip. Works great. Note, inside of tubing will change SWR a bit.
    Like so -- www.n4lcd.com/wireantennas/47-Vertical_Sleeve_Antenna_for_10m.jpg

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  2 года назад +1

      Yes that works too, It just takes a bit more coax than I have to spare and yes using reactively odd multiples of 1/4 wave is a very good idea
      Because we definitely want a good ohmic match

    • @TheColeChannelEagle
      @TheColeChannelEagle Год назад

      Sorry, but it is NOT like an Antron 99 or a Big Stick. The 99, and the Big Stick, and the iMax are essentially END FED antennas, and not electically the same as a center fed dipole.

    • @tahoma6889
      @tahoma6889 Год назад

      @@TheColeChannelEagle What I described here is would be called a Bazooka by ham folks. Some believe them to be a ZEP. All I know, they work. There is no doubt about that. Easy to pull up into a tree. Or, put inside of Fiberglass rod or PVC. Back in the day, we hung these all over the place. Mostly on local hilltops. Very few people knew about them. Those that did would pull up in the mobile, fish the coax out of the bushes and plug in. Presto!

    You should have used a "T-piece" for plumbing, but you were using what you had to hand. You can also cut up a plastic bread/cutting board and make a "T-piece" out of that and still have enough for the ends, however, you have to waterproof the joint in the middle.
    Where did you find all that info, must have taken you a while to look all that up? :-P
    Nicely done though, but looping the coax might have caused you a problem, but this time it didn't, what I would have done is either weave it through the pipe or just put a couple if tie-wraps through, you can also tie-wrap it at the joint and pull it both ways (put a tie-wrap on the coax, two tie-wraps through those and pull them through and out the ends (yeah, it takes a bit of working out). If you use a bread/cutting board you can drill holes and thread the coax through the holes, also the wire for the antenna, takes the strain. Best if you have the centre of the coax going up, but you failed to mention it.
    A few coils of coax if you have a problem will help with SWR and common mode currents if you get bother (at antenna end).
    Horizontal is not always bad, I have had some excellent copies on CB skip (in fact my best ones) when horizontal, but they are directional, maybe this helps as well though, but it is not so convenient as the antenna will not always be radiating the way you want it.
    You want to give that control in the SWR meter a squirt of cleaner! (Not WD40 like I have seen some use!!!) [Sighs]
    That was an excellent demo of how to make and use a wire dipole, well done, your mate must have kept you right :-P :-)

      Oh if I had looked all this up I know it would’ve taken me at least several months to find that stuff out
      But all those calculations and measurements and things are just stuff I learned over the past years studying and reading
      I went from not knowing what SWR was 2 years ago to where I am now. Honestly I’m not very happy with myself because I could’ve studied more I will be getting my ham license on the 17th of this month if everything goes according to plan though
      I did make a choke Balun out of my co-axle cable for my dipole on the ceiling but I do have a type 43 ferrite torrid Which helps a lot with RFI
      And yes you can absolutely use a horizontal dipole to talk skip because as you know the ionosphere causes the polarization to get mixed up when it bounces
      Personally I went with a vertical because I did not have skip in mind necessarily I had local contacts in mind
      however it seemed to work very well for Skip and that was not even the point of the video so I’m happy with that
      thanks for all your advice and there’s all kinds of ways you could’ve built this antenna for sure The plastic board is a good idea as well
      I’m sure there’s plenty of improvements that could’ve been made but I think for what it is it worked very well for demonstration purposes like you said
      And I appreciate the compliments that was very nice of you

      @@JohnnyNJones I am working on it, but it is a bit of a project, I have a big radio in there and it is taking up most of the bench, so until I find some info on it it will sit there taking up a lot of room.
      It lights up, transmits, but although it appears to receive there is no sound and the audio iC and everything around it is working fine, so looking for a manual for it.
      Cybernet Board PCBM059COX.
      I found a on-line manual, but I have no signal in the Man Cave and though I printed of the set up for it, I can't print the schematic for it as it is a PDF and when you blow it up a bit it is unreadable.
      He wants far to much for the manual, the manual is no out of print.
      If I had one I would copy it and send it back, but I don't, so I can't.
      The board is in many guises and many CBs, but this board was one of the last produced, so manuals appear to be few and far between.
      I have to fix it, than it is going away to a Ham who is going to put it to someone to have it on 28Mhz 10 meters. He converts set, but only if they are working, he will not fix sets as he say it is impossible for him to get parts for old CBs.
      I know where he is coming from as it is almost impossible to get some parts.
      It is an Ham International Jumbo, but not a common model. It does not have the weird audio that other Ham Jumbos had.
      On FM they had a strange dragging sound to the transmitted audio. This one does not have that problem.
      However, I found a board marked Ham International that has been disconnected inside the set. I have no idea what this board was for, or who disconnected it and why, yet!

      I don’t know if they will be clear enough for you but I can zoom in pretty well on them. The problem is they’re never going to fit on a standard printer size piece of paper
      All I can think of is maybe print eight segmented pages of the image
      By the way there are several boards on the schematic maybe the one you’re looking for that’s been disconnected will be on there

      I found the board I have, but you can't print it either, I also found this site, Hungarian, but it is all earlier boards, I could download if free for 5 days, but it is pointless, wrong boards!
      I can't even find the site where I found a diagram, but it was unreadable.
      Another site had it but you couldn't download from it. The diagram on it was useless as well.
      Trust me to get the board that there was not a lot made of.

    LOL antenna polarization only matters if you are talking LOCAL ts someone. Once the signal hits and bounces off of the Ionosphere the polarization does not matter. A 500 mile contact is Sporadic E skip and happens every year because it is not caused by sunspots. Horizontally polarized antennas cancel out a lot of man made noise which is vertically polarized mostly. Just about ANY antenna can work skip, Sporadic E or F layer... I have worked skip many times with a Realistic walkie talkie on the extendable antenna. It's all in the propagation, not so much the radio and antenna. Also depends on the interference. You won't get heard on Ch 6 but if you find a clear channel with no strong stations and no bleed over from others (for you or the other station you're trying to talk to) you can talk skip as much as you want when the conditions are right. BTW I have the same Johnson in my collection. Interesting radios but really nothing special except that they're pretty rare now. They didn't put out that much power and had very small final transistors.

    • @JohnnyNJones
      @JohnnyNJones  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I’m talking about LOCAL when I’m talking about polarization.
      A dipole in horizontal configuration can talk skip just fine, it’s the local contacts that mostly use vertical antennas that you’d have trouble talking to
      ((For any third-party viewers looking at these comments what he’s talking about is when a wave hits the ionosphere it gets all jumbled up and it’s polarization can become twisted and non-uniform so vertical antennas can talk to horizontal antennas))
      Yes most man made noise is vertical, but I don’t have any problem with that
      I’d rather talk to locals than try to DX
      So how long have you been a HAM?

So I had fun trying a couple different type and I just decided to run a flat dipole along the crown of the house. But these inverted V antennas are awesome if you live near mountains.
