Interesting video and well done , I’m the guys who started fly fishing 63 years ago because I saw some old guy fly fishing I was 9 years old and had no clue what he was doing . I went and asked him what this was he was doing and lucky for me he took the time and taught me , the sport has taught me patients, humility, and to never give up . To push the envelope no matter what , I’ve met some of the most interesting people and have had the chance to fish with the best . To me it’s been a never ending lesson on not only fishing but nature and all it glory , life experiences that you can’t replicate without doing it . It’s not for everyone so don’t be deluded that it’s some spiritual experience and your days will be filled with big fish that you see on RUclips , but be sure you will learn a lot if you let yourself do so . I will see you on the water.
    Happy Trails

One reason I don't take pictures of fish I catch, it keeps me from living in the past and pushes me to get out and find that next one. Some of my most memorable fish most guys would scoff at the small size of them, but it's not the size of the fish...it's the total experience.

Nailed it, uncertainty/unknown is what draws me,I can control my casting, fly choice & presentation, what I can't control is weather, what their eating, water conditions or fishes behavior, that's what's draws me to this sport & the water, what's around the next bend, hatching, surface or subsurface feed, the beauty around me a tough question to ask but you nailed it

Beautifully done brother! I’ve been flying fishing now for 27 years and it’s always an uncertainty; every trip is different and every trip the fish want different flies. But that has helped me realize how to apply that same patience to uncertainty and difficulties in life. As Harry Middleton once said,”Fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it.” Thank you for all your hard work and documenting all of those uncertainties that you’ve had throughout your fly fishing career and life. The thing I love best about fly fishing is the uncertainty!! To me, it’s about the minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day assessment of all the variables that occur during the experience. Whether it’s the water conditions, weather, what the fish are feeding on, the physical and mental energy expended searching for the fish, and so on. When I started fly fishing, I also started yoga. The two couldn’t have complimented each other more than they do, and I kid you not, since their introduction, my personal life has never been better. 🤙

As a fly fishermen for over 20 years I can tell you I have fell into the routine of fishing the same rivers and same sections. In the last 7 to 8 years I have really ventured out of what I would say a comfort zone and fished new waters and different species, like I used to as a young angler. I have done week long trips for steelhead and never even got a bump. It has made me realize the true joys of fly fishing again. Everyone wants to catch a fish, but I feel more excitement and enjoyment now in the the challenge of new waters and species. And even more in learning new casting on a spey and perfecting my technique all together. In my opinion a sign of a amazing fly fishermen is a person willing to look for the unknown and uncertainty. Embrace it and love the experience and challenge of it. I would rather fish with someone that is willing to hike into a small creek or fish a total new river having no idea what is in store then go fish with someone on the same river over and over. Everyone has a difference of opinion about it, but I feel like if more new anglers came into it with a mindset like you are saying they would find way more enjoyment in fly fishing. Great videos and great content. Love it guys keep it up!!

It has been a little over 1 year since I caught my fist trout on a size 18 parachute adams dry fly. I was primarily a float fisherman then and still do it from time to time. That take on the dry fly though changed my life forever. Fly fishing is my passion within a year I caught plenty of fish. I have had good times, my PB bow and brown are over 20 inches. I've also had bad times, I have taken multiple steelhead trips just to be skunked out. The chase, the rush you get in your veins when you have "the one" on keeps you going. It makes you face the challenges time after time after you fail just for the chance you will succeed. This sport has made me grown so much as a person and I cannot imagine putting down the rod until I am 6 feet under. Tight lines everyone!

I started fly fishing in the early 1960’s as my dad’s tag-along. I realized a long time ago that fishing with my daughters and fishing buddies could be chronicled by taking pics; not just of the fish, but just taking pics in the moment. The older I get the more I realize we do need to get out there and embrace the moment, but we should cherish the ones we have made already.

Nicely produced video, as a fly fisherman of 50 years, I don't think I've ever felt the uncertainty of catching a fish. Uncertainty for me is making payroll when a company fail to make a payment, or having to mortgage your home to make payroll. As a pilot and a martial arts expert, I always taken the uncertainty out of the situations. Fly fishing to me is the fresh air, the flowing water, the tactical challenge of where you are fishing. I am in the process of starting a RUclips channel, mostly to share my knowledge of the tactical side of fly fishing and the entomology of the stream I am fishing. I do love all kinds of fishing, having owned a fish farm at one time, I was able to study much of how fish react to the presence of a human being.

This past winter my son and I went to a fly fishing only creek. I warned him it’s tough, the fish are wary, they see it all but sometimes you luck out. The first two times we went we caught a couple fish. The third time we a dream come true. We ended the day with catching and releasing 60 fish, all 2-5lbs. If we had given up and we wouldn’t have had a memorable day and like I told him, we just need to keep trying.

For me, I get very little time on the water (full time job and family), and as a growing creator I feel the added pressure of trying to make sure that the little time I get on the water is as productive as possible for my channel... but at the end of the day its about the experience... the story.. and not just the fish and if we lost sight of that then we're probably not there for the right reason. I have Loved every ounce of uncertainty in my fly fishing adventures. You are 100% right in that it's not the size of the fish that make these Adventures in our lives, its way more than that. For me, it's always been what I look back on that makes me smile from those fishing adventures. It's that moment when I watched a buddy or family member that I mentored, to catch his or her first fish. It's not really important that it was the first perfect cast, or if was the first perfect retrieve, or if it was their first big fish. It mattered more to me, the unforgettable Moment in our lives, when I saw how they really first smiled that day, as I know my Granddad had seen in me, on the day of my first catch. That feeling of reward is unparalleled in life.
Those are the moments from the great uncertainty that I will always remember the most. For me, it was the moment in time as tiny as the flies that we tie on. The expressions that someone I had mentored would experience, on that moment when their line danced for the first time, that moment when they finally set their first hook in that great unknown. It really doesn't have to be a perfect cast after all, or a perfect weather day, or the perfect ride or hike getting out there. It's really hard to find the right words... except that in this growth in fly fishing, we must make as many of those tiny moments as we possibly can. Cause one day, while in our rocking chair, we too will always be able to remember and smile from all the Life's Uncertainty that we once held onto, just like my Granddad held onto with me.
Mentoring is not always easy, but it is necessary to keep the Fly-Fishing Sport alive and truly appreciated for what it is. We as unique individuals and outdoor folk, don't always all see eye to eye on every aspect of the art, the form and the sport of fly fishing. But I do hope we can all see the importance of passing on what we have learned and all that we know, and too the importance of just being out there, wherever there is for each of us... "Fish ON"

The uncertainty or should I say the "possibility" of succeeding is what really drives me. There are things in fly fishing that just don't make sense also. For instance, I have a video on the Weber River in November where I caught four 20"+ fish in an hour. I thought I found a honey hole. I go back to that spot every year at the same time and NOTHING. What happened? Who knows? But when you try that new spot and you are surprised with incredible success it is the best feeling. That is what drives me. Thanks for posting this video, it was excellent!!!

Scotty, this is a wonderful video. One of your best. Don't get me wrong, I love your fishing videos. This one though made me reflect on what I get from fly fishing. My head, my heart and my soul are in a better place when I get into a river, creek or stream. Problems dissolve, at least temporarily. Uncertainty for me when I relate it to fishing is about whether or not I can find the fish or will they elude me. Either way I'm up for the game. It's fair. A few hours on the water is my happy place. I don't think about my business or my blood pressure. I love hearing what others get from the sport and they are all valid. I guess the biggest uncertainty for me is whether or not I can get out on the water today, tomorrow or next week. When the opportunity presents itself I go. The only certainty is knowing I'll be back another day.

Fishing for my first 2 years on the Bow river in Alberta (without a boat), I had to eat a lot of humble pie while I was learning the basics it took me 5 months to catch a couple of little 10inch trout out of the bow my first year. But they were the first fish I had ever caught on any gear, and it was worth the struggle and the time. Throughout my second year I had a bit of a more productive season, but still haven't pulled in that many fish, but not a single one out of the mighty, unforgiving Bow. I had to get out and fish some lakes and mountain creeks where the fish get less pressure than on such a famous river. That in itself helped me learn more about the sport, still water flies and looking for deep pockets. Now that I've moved to BC, I'll be putting a lot of those skills into use, without huge rivers around me to take advantage of. Fly fishing is certainly not for the easily dissuaded.
Love your content Scotty! It's phenomenal! Thanks for keeping us pumped about fishing over the winter.

This video came at a providential time for me. I’m at an inflection point both in my life and in fly fishing. I’m at the specific point you mention in the video where I’m excited, bought the gear and I’ve been obsessively reading and consuming; and when I’m going out to fish it is hard and I’m terrible at it. As someone who has become very good at a few things in my life it is frustrating to be bad at something again. This video popped up like a mentor pulling me aside to remind me to keep going and just enjoy the process. Thank you.

Interesting video . I think your perspective is spot on . One thing that’s great about your videos is your positive message to get out there and try something new.

Heck of a video Scottie but even more important is the message. The fear of uncertainty can be a dream crusher. Needed to hear this today. Keep it up!

Nailed it. In local vernacular- “I’ve been to more than a few rodeos “ and a huge part of living life fully lies within your ability to cope; live with and/or over come uncertainty. If I may add to this train of thought- IMO ‘choices’ is another key element in not only when, where and how we fish but also how we live. We’re all a product of the ‘choices’ we make, consciously or otherwise. You’re doing fine young filmmaker and I would encourage you to keep to the path you’ve obviously ‘chosen’.

Wise words from humble men, thank you for your quality content scotty. Being fairly new to fly fishing, ive immersed myself in the world of fly fishing from youtube and forums to fly shops both locally, and states away. To this day, your brand has continued to inspire me the most, to get out and learn more for myself, and by myself. Thank you scotty, wild fly, and blue line co, oh...and "stay huge" haha

Listening to your definition and description of uncertainty sounds like my thoughts about going out on my bike for a couple hundred mile solo ride.
“Think of all the ways you could die in the next 24 hours. Does that hold you back?” No, not anymore. Nine years ago I got in a pretty bad accident. I was stopped for about 8-10 cars behind a school bus. The car behind me didn’t stop. They estimated he hit me at about 50mph. I was launched and spun around, and landed face down where he drove over me, dragging me down the road. It was a life-threatening accident without life-threatening injuries. I got freakin’ lucky! I spent 10 days in the hospital and 6 months out of work. Most people would give up riding after something like that. Me? Hell no! I went out and bought another motorcycle, a bigger motorcycle, at my fist chance. I have put almost 30,000 miles on it riding from New York (my home) to DC to North Carolina and back, as well as just local 200 mile rides.
Was I a little nervous that first ride? Of course I was, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from doing something I love.
I guess I’m just trying to say that you can’t let your uncertainty of ANYTHING stop you from trying something new, or doing something you love. Don’t be shy, just go do it.
Thank you for this video, it made me reflect on my life a little, and that was needed.

Amazing vid man. Last few times I’ve gone out I’ve never even gotten a bite, still pretty new getting back into fishing from my younger days. This vid helped remind me why I fish and go outside.

@phelpsonthefly great words of wisdom. @Wildfly keep up the amazing work.
From someone who tried and realized I could never film in such a professional way; fly fishing will bring anyone hesitant to take the next step in life, the synergy in nature they most likely need. Your crew expresses that in visually gratifying way. It's a great process to follow.

I needed to see this video. As somone new to fly fishing that's eager to learn, it's been discouraging to see some folks in various message boards being argumentative and battling over various subjects that in the grand scheme of things don't matter at all. There have been several times now where I've also thought about bailing and going back to the baitcaster or spinning reel bc I didn't have a clue what I was doing and felt like I don't "fit in" with the community. Thanks for the providing some perspective.
