I'll be using this video to clean a Dreamcast I just acquired but when it comes to the laser for ANY system avoid using compressed air on a drive or laser assembly. Q-tips and 91% isopropyl alcohol are what I use for a laser or a disc drive of any kind.

PREAMBLE: I didn't realize this would be such a big project that would take an afternoon, but here's my experience CLEANING AND RESTORING A SEGA DREAMCAST. This goes into a little more depth than the video. BEFORE: GROSS, once I got the first 4 screws and lifted off the lid, I found DEAD BUGS in the Dreamcast I just purchased from the flea market. I see at least one dead inside between the controller ports and power switch. I guess I'm going to finish watching this and then take this project outside. I will need to take apart everything and clean it more thoroughly. I haven't tested this yet because it needs a deep cleaning. (The lot also had 3 grungy controllers with the hookups, but that's for another day) DURING: First, I took out the buttons and cleaned the lid. I removed the spring on the open button for the lid by simply pulling it, but I did not mess with the two screws holding the gears in place because there seemed to be a lot more tension in that spring. I cleaned out all of the visible dirt from the lid with my spigot. I then took out the GD-ROM drive by unscrewing 3 screws, unplugged the fan from the controller port board and took out 2 screws and removed it, then removed the ribbon cable from the main board that connects the controller ports. 4 screws later and I had the controller ports off, 2 more screws and I unhinged the power supply and took away a plastic part shielding it, removed the power button, and then I took a bunch of screws out to get the metal shielding and the main board out. The shielding had RUST, but it was not on any of the boards or components. Underneath the metal plates was a bunch bug feces and dead carcasses. All of my main parts: the fan, the controller board, the power supply board, and the GD-ROM. I hosed out the dead bugs and gave every plastic part a good cleaning with a wash cloth and some warm soapy water. AFTER: I reassembled everything after almost losing that plastic shield under the power supply and the foamy part of the GD-ROM to a gust of wind. I got inside, sat down, crossed my fingers, plugged in a spare controller, AV, and POWER cable to my little 13" TV, put in a copy of CRAZY TAXI that was part of the lot, set the clock, and then began playing one of my FAVORITE GAMES on my new DREAMCAST! SEGA built these to withstand the elements and I had a really good feeling about the system working after it was cleaned up.

Really good up until 2:43. You have to stick a little straw in those fans because compressed air pushes them way faster than their supposed to go. You can easily burn them out that way. That's the same for any case fan. They're specced to a certain RPM, sealed, and lubed. You screw that up and your fan went from a 10-20 year fan to a 1 month fan needing to be either relubed every month or replaced or your case can burn up. :( no bueno.
THANK YOU for letting me know why my Dreamcast controller ports died years ago. Luckily GameStop did not check those when trading in the console many year ago.
I just got myself my first Dreamcast (I could only drool at them in 1999) and after the Ps2 was out I just never looked back. But my new DC (though it works great... cant say the same for the psx and ps2 fat i had) is yellowish, is there a way to make it white again?

Flying V that's what I was thinking as I watched this myself. Additionally, something I keep in my nerdy caddy of restoration products is armor all auto interior wipes. Those bastards not only have returned luster to exteriors, but I'll be damned if they aren't just fantastic to initially clean dirt, scuffs off with as well. knocks a step out for me. Lastly the lowest concentration alcohol I use is 91 at least. unfortunately, I don't like scrambling looking from denatured alcohol, and Amazon doesn't like shipping racing fuel in essence, so 91 is my go to. I've found cutting magic erasers to size is more efficient for me, plus they seem to work on removing tough corrosion f I'm pin connections in carts, only as a last measure though. But it boils down to watching other people's videos if you're new to this, find what works best for u, and have fun with it, cause if you love "retro" gaming your going to be doing a lot of this shit, the deeper you get 😐
Adam Koralik hey do you have any idea or tips on how to remove those older yellow GameStop stickers they adhered to the actual disc case inserts? cannot find or develop a decent removal technique
A couple corrections I would like to make about what you said. While the vast majority of dreamcasts use standard screws, my two pre-release rental units used security screws. Also, these two consoles have that foam piece under the lid you said was only on later models.
I found Pledge to work better. It dries faster, doesn't smell bad (smells good actually), resists dust longer, and isn't corrosive to plastic. I'm not sure about the cut off.
I've noticed that you mention using Windex for spot and connector cleaning in these videos. What do you think of substituting Windex with isopropyl alcohol? Are there situations where isopropyl alcohol would be inappropriate?
You could, but I find it doesn't work as well. You'll have 50% of people tell you one is the way to go and 50% telling you the other way. Your call, but for what it's worth, I recommend Windex.

I'm not even talking about the laser anymore, I'm talking about how much of a hassle the format is to work with. I'm just glad they're disks, because none of those games recently released would have been even conceptualized.

The two Rev. 0 heatpipe version Dreamcasts I got is functioning ok but should I leave it alone and just vacuum and clean the outside or totally tear it down and clean all the parts with water and Dr. Bronner (maybe even apply thermal paste for on top of the old thermal pads) even if it's functioning ok? Clean the CD laser with cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol Cotton swab is the same as Q-Tips? also does this method (that i made up) work?
My family had wallpaper on the cabinets in our kitchen, we used a magic eraser without much force behind it even and the wallpaper was just plain white. Yeah, Mr. Clean takes being clean fairly seriously.
Hello, i just got a Dreamcast a few months ago, and yesterday i just got some games and some power adaptors that i needed. So i noted that the sega was overheating alot... the games run just perfect, but it really heats up, (it's summer in here though) So i'm going to do this Adam, maybe the fan has some dirt or something, thanks alot! Hello Adam, ty for these awesome reviews and tutorials I recently found my DC jp import ver. and has since been modded to be region free I was quite grimy in appearance, and have successfully cleaned it up It has never had any difficulty spinning and reading discs but, quite dirty none the less. After I cleaned it internally, by way of compressed air in small and short carefully directed bursts, being sure to avoid the laser eye, and after having gently wiped the laser eye with a Q-tip dampened with rubbing alcohol, I am sad to report that the Video Pic Quality is not as vibrant nor as sharp as it initially was before I quickly, gently and carefully cleaned it. However, the response time on entered controller commands for games has improved( much improved response time, for sure). I wanted to know if you have any insight as to why that would be? is it possible the alcohol my have slightly blemished the laser eye resulting in a slight reduced pic quality? That's a new one. You could try cleaning it. I think the Dreamcast has an auto-start option. Though I could be wrong about that. Maybe tinker with that...if it exists.
Possible. Grand Theft Auto III was slated for the Dreamcast as well, but also axed. Who knows what difference they could have made. Halo was also originally planned for the Dreamcast as well, but it was an RTS. Nothing like what Halo ultimately became.
No I took the top off and powered the console up using the method in your repair video and noticed that the laser does not light up when the power is switched on and the disc stops spinning after the dreamcast logo screen.
Is it me or does the Dreamcast laser emit a weak light? I was trying to see whether or not the bulb had burned out on mine, but I did not see the laser (I was looking at it from the side) turn on. The motors moved and the laser itself moved up and down, but I did not see the laser itself come on. Are the lasers on these things just relatively dim?
In general, yes. Part of the reason for that is because Sega put a lot of money into the Saturn's laser (hence they're so reliable even now). But when they made the Dreamcast, they felt they could cut back. This is made worse by the fact that pirated games really damage it further.
I have 2 REV0 units that were from Hollywood Video, they used normal screws. I've never encountered a Dreamcast with security screws. One funny thing about them though is they have an empty shell for the modem.
The restart issue, as far as I know, mostly has to do with the laser being weak. Reclibrating it SHOULD fix that. The alternative is the lid detection mechanism isn't working properly.
i recently replaced the led light with a color changing rgb light, it's awesome but my fan is starting to get noisy. do you have any suggestions on the fan, i was thinking of replacing it but im not aware of the size since i have nothing to measure it with
I completely agree about the laser issue, it makes reading discs with a little damage less and less likely, the more damage they have. Saturn games have always worked while very scratched, compared to dreamcast. The issue of them not using DVD's and using the GDRom was to me why it failed, cause everyone wanted a dvd player with their fucking system at the time and ps2 basically took over.
Both of mine have that shell, too. That's interesting that your two have normal screws, while my two both have security screws. The two that I have also have the serial number sticker in a different location from normal and one still has the barcode sticker from hollywood video.
Hey, Adam! You should do something about Half-Life on the Dreamcast! It was unreleased, but was only canned just weeks before release. It even had an official guide for it that you can buy. Luckily (thanks to the Internet) there is a download for the Dreamcast version. So I was kind of inspired by your videos and I decided to get a Dreamcast. So far I LOVE IT! I am going to pick up Shenmue soon. But there is one problem with my Dreamcast. The top is yellow is there any way to make it white again?? I cleaned it and stuff by following your directions but it is still yellow. Do you have any suggestions?
Hey Adam, my Dreamcast won't always start some games. (Worms Armageddon is one of them.) This is basically what happens I start worms I can play one game then the screen turns black I restart the system I press play on the DC start screen it brings me back to the start screen. Then I press the music icon and it plays the games music. I turn off the system remove the disc insert Shenmue. Shenmue plays fine I remove shenmue wait 30 mins and then the whole process resets it self.
Hey adam I have a sega sports dreamcast it worked wonders before but after that it's giving me some weird issues like when turning it on the normal boot screen doesn't come on it just says dreamcast it will take me to the clock screen since the internal battery ran dry and after putting a game in it the dreamcast will freeze has that happened to you?

Quick question Adam, the tiny screws on the VMU's that hold the battery in. I've seen many (mine included) where the screw has begun to oxidize and generally deteriorate. Any idea on what size screws these are and where they can be purchased?

My brother recently gave me his Dreamcast, I've been messing around with mods, it's awesome to figure stuff out! Great console.

I haven't done it personally, but you basically just replace a fuse on the controller boards inside the console. I'm told it's easy.

Actually I take that back, I got that gray model 1 Saturn. But I didn't think to make a video about cleaning it.
I think it helps to prevent the disc from scratch the surface, or possibly with making the system a little quieter. Of course you shouldn't remove it.

I recently revived a dreamcast and it's revision 0, I looked at the screws and they are not Phillips. Are all the revision 0s like this?
You can fix the yellowing issue with the Retr0bright method.
The other issue takes a little more work.

Yeah, Google the Retr0bright method. Cleaning it won't get rid of the yellowing, only the Retr0bright method will do it.

That entirely depends on the condition, where you get it, what it comes with, and so on.

I completely agree about the laser issue, it makes reading discs with a little damage less and less likely, the more damage they have. Saturn games have always worked while very scratched, compared to dreamcast. The issue of them not using DVD's and using the GDRom was to me why it failed, cause everyone wanted a dvd player with their fucking system at the time and ps2 basically took over.
Both of mine have that shell, too. That's interesting that your two have normal screws, while my two both have security screws. The two that I have also have the serial number sticker in a different location from normal and one still has the barcode sticker from hollywood video.
Adam, how do you recalibrate it (the laser)? Do you have a video for that?
I wouldn't know how.
Changing the battery is rarely needed. It's rechargable. Just play your Dreamcast and it should charge up.

Hey, Adam! You should do something about Half-Life on the Dreamcast! It was unreleased, but was only canned just weeks before release. It even had an official guide for it that you can buy. Luckily (thanks to the Internet) there is a download for the Dreamcast version. Normally I would ask YuriofWind to do it, but he doesn't want to respond to me, unlike you were you seem to talk more in comments than you do in a video, something I really like about you! Anyway, you should check out Half-Life!
So I was kind of inspired by your videos and I decided to get a Dreamcast. So far I LOVE IT! I am going to pick up Shenmue soon. But there is one problem with my Dreamcast. The top is yellow is there any way to make it white again?? I cleaned it and stuff by following your directions but it is still yellow. Do you have any suggestions?
Hey Adam, my Dreamcast won't always start some games. (Worms Armageddon is one of them.) This is basically what happens I start worms I can play one game then the screen turns black I restart the system I press play on the DC start screen it brings me back to the start screen. Then I press the music icon and it plays the games music. I turn off the system remove the disc insert Shenmue. Shenmue plays fine I remove shenmue wait 30 mins and then the whole process resets it self.

Hey adam I have a sega sports dreamcast it worked wonders before but after that it's giving me some weird issues like when turning it on the normal boot screen doesn't come on it just says dreamcast it will take me to the clock screen since the internal battery ran dry and after putting a game in it the dreamcast will freeze has that happened to you?
yeah once in awhile i will see a dreamcast controller but not the system,there hard to find in my town for some odd reason... i know since watching your videos on how to fix systems it makes me want to fix old system and have someone play them again.
The motor relies on the eye being good ? Wow my friend thought the motor died I hope he didn't junk it and can try potentiometer tweak again ?
Is it OK to do this to the modem part of the dream cast? as Im not sure when in the sun it can be bad for it.

Quick question Adam, the tiny screws on the VMU's that hold the battery in. I've seen many (mine included) where the screw has begun to oxidize and generally deteriorate. Any idea on what size screws these are and where they can be purchased?
