  • Thank you to our Alpha patron John for this pick. We continue our weekly journey through our first film on the channel, "Jesus Christ Superstar". So far, so good! This is an amazing watch so far. I can't wait to finish it now. I am very aware of the story of the Christ as it is told in the Bible. This, of course, is a different interpretation. But, it is quite enjoyable.
    Link to original content (Please support the artist! I'm just giving my opinion, go get the real deal.)
    If you’d like to donate to the channel or just show your appreciation, all the details are below. I created this channel for my daughter, so she has videos of her father talking and doing something he enjoys(listening to music and talking about it) since I don’t have any of those of my father. :) thank you again for your generosity guys, I appreciate you all more then you will ever know.

    The reason bad things happen is because we have free will. God doesn't interfere. What do we do with that free will? Some try to do good. Others do bad. And we learn from all of it. My Mom took my brother and I to see this when it came out in 1973. I was 12 years old. She took us to see Hair and Tommy as well. All really good musicals. She was all about introducing us to different ways of thinking and different view points.

    • @psbarrow
      @psbarrow 4 месяца назад

      Free will is as much a delusion as fairies at the bottom of the garden. It takes an amazing level of arrogance to think the human brain is the one exception in the known Universe that violates determinism.

    I think Pilate's Dream MIGHT be my favorite individual song of the whole opera. "Then I saw thousands of millions crying for this man.... And then I heard them mentioning my name... and leaving me the blame." Really moved me. They changed some of the words during the market scene... but it still works. I can't wait for Jesus to do the Freak Out!! Okay, they did that well! Great so far!!

    The temple scene here and the one it segues into - the encounter with the lepers: "See my eyes, I can hardly see", sung on the same funky, frantic melody, is hands dpwn one of the peak parts of both the film and the original album for me. When he meets the lepers and they beg to be freed from their misery and shame, it's like the pain of all of creation is weighing down on his shoulders, and we realize that "he can't cure ALL the people who are suffering in the world, now can he? - and even if he did, there would be more" - so he has to go one step further, he has to go down a different road... Awesome and timeless scene.

    Thank you for reacting to this... I have to say I'm an atheist myself... but this musical spoke to me. To me it in a way questions and challenging religion. The arriving in the desert and having the actors get ready and into character for me was to show the fact that it is just a story they're telling and the modern weapons and all are maybe to show that this is a story that could happen anytime, even the superstar in the title is maybe to draw parallels with how people nowadays idolise and worship celebrities but I think way too much about these things, I'm sorry for rambling

  • @meredithsmyth7059

    WOW! I really enjoyed both the reaction and your thoughts on God and spirituality! And I pretty much agree with 100% of what you said. It's nice to be reminded of others who are on the same page. And whose foundations and ideas I can relate to. Thank you for this. I grew up listening to Superstar so I can't wait for the next one.
    AND TO ANSWER A QUESTION: The reason why the Roman's didn't care about what was going on in the temple (besides that you're right: they probably made money) is not because they didn't care about God, they didn't care about the God of the Hebrews because they had their own Gods. They still worshied Jupiter et al. The same thing happens today. People don't care about people who worship the "wrong" God.

    Just bringing the medium slightly more up to date....an essential viewing and even more important listening experience is Madonna's lead role in the EVITA film. I am of the same mind and feeling as you on almost everything you have said. I know it's very hard to grasp but infinite means no beginning or end, so when we say the beginning, that's illusory, also. Everything happens in the Eternal Now. Whenever I think of God, I ask the question, "what would unfathomable love do?" and use that as the standard for answering spiritual questions. I too believe there is what I call a quickening occurring today that implies, not an end, but as we know it. As far as the dancing, it was originally a musical play, so I guess without the dancing there would not have been much happening on stage, lol.

    Love is God, and God is Love. That is at the heart of nearly all religions and spiritual paths. People often just get too caught up in the various theologies, which often makes them blind to the real message... the real power... LOVE! Just imagine if everyone in the world TRULY lived from a place of Love... for the ALL, their neighbors, for the Earth, for themselves. It isn't a difficult concept, but people still seem to have trouble seeing the forest for the trees. My personal belief is we ARE getting there. Sometimes, it takes the worst of us to remind us of what good there is and how we can bestow good with every breath we take. Anyway, thank you for this reaction. I vibe with all that you say and appreciate that you are gleaning some of the deeper ideas behind this particular rock opera. :)

    Yes, the theatrical studio version is better from a "quality" perspective.
    But without a visual it would possibly have less effect as a reaction. Having worked in the theatre and film business for over 20 years... a live performance of this THEATRICAL production is truely what "should" be experienced. Just my opinion...

    It's important to note that the Pharasees were historically not the main people who profited from the temple merchants, nor was Jesus angry with them. He despised the rich of any religious group, but the main profiteers here were the Roman occupiers. Not only could the Romans collect money on goods sold through taxes, but they were more than happy to use the temple for their own religious rites and connect on sacrificial funds.
    Imagine Jesus - a Jew who may have believed himself to be the messiah - coming to the holy temple, expecting careful sacrifices and charitable collection from the Pharasees, only to see a bunch of Roman and Canaanite pagans selling animals for sacrifice and practicing "sacred prostitution" outside. Add to it that the Romans were fans of pederasti (using young men as consorts for aristocrats) and he was no doubt furious at the Romans. If he lashed out at the Pharasees, it was because they were willing to go along with their occupiers.
    To be clear, I'm a queer pagan who is more interested in the historical human Jesus than the God Jesus of myth. However, sex workers, homosexuality, polytheism, and worst of all greed were massive triggers for good ol' Josh of Nazareth. If the Pharasees acted, it was out of self preservation watching this Rabbi who was both progressive and traditional speaking for the Jewish people as he had a freak out.

    I know it's a heated discussion for years but everyone has his own favourites.
    To me it's different than most other comments so far but who knows, maybe it's because I had seen the movie many times before I first heard the other version.
    I did most of the comparison by the song Gethsemane and to me Gillan's phrasing is just horrible, to me Ted Neely is far superior on it with ten times the emotion.
    That's just my opinion...now you can nail me to the tree! 😉

    Just finished reading an amazing book on the historical Jesus... amazing and informative book... it's called "ZEALOT"... Many interesting facts, such as:
    Jesus was never born in Bethlehem. Pilate was not a sympathetic figure that some films / narratives makes him out to be. He probably sent thousands to the cross. etc.
    Having said all the actually love the music and visuals (except for a blonde-haired Jesus... lol) "Superstar" and "Godspell" are both amazing films.
    For my part don't believe in a loving God that would send people to Hell for eternity for not believing in him. That makes no sense. Agree totally with your ending take on empathy and just being a good person. I might not be religious, but I adore the quote: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Another way of saying it (via the band XTC) "Do what you will, but harm no one." Cheers!

    • @progperljungman8218
      @progperljungman8218 4 месяца назад

      @@ksaint7 There was one concert version done in London to support the concept album from 1970. This was the year before the play was created and set up on Broadway. So, it all started with the album + a single concert, but stageplay wise, Broadway was the "original" (and Copenhagen was next actually)
      The movie was a third kind of recreation of what was originally a concept album. The Wall is a good parallel.
      Edit/note: The different embodyments of The Wall was possibly more rooted in the visions of the original creator.
