You dare use my own spells against me, potter?
Sir Alen Rickman, was another joy to this world as Eric is for us now.

Oh no my Dumbledore : The Hogwarts Defense (crumbling)
Yes, I am the half blood prince
I, personally, like a longer format. I love seeing 30-minute+ runtimes on rating-climb videos. Obviously do what's best for your schedule and channel. But if you're asking for opinions, I'll throw in my vote for the "multiple games per video" side.
I agree, but I also like this series. I like that Eric has variable video times. But the extras channel is the kind of content that got me hooked. Just 3 hours of straight chess, ideally 10-minute games. I just like the pacing and explanations Eric is able to do in 10-minute games, however many there are
Yeah this video left me wanting for more. But lovely video though!
*Random 1000 elo player plays the stafford gambit*
Eric: "So you have chosen death."
*So you have chosen -92 elo points in rapid*
Props to the opponent. He played a great game at 1000 & clearly knew opening theory pretty deeply. He wrestled against an IM for a really long time :D
I feel like it would be harder not to wrestle in a Stafford Gambit. The opening kinda does things for you. The utter lack of tactics is natural.
I have watched all 14 videos now and for some reason I am enjoying chess much more. I believe it is the calmness and slow speaking, is where it gives me more time to dwell on the moves and learn from. In my view all the other chess masters making videos overwhelme me with too much fast speaking. This is a joy to learn from.
Eric, you bring a sense of peace and stability to my life that I cannot adequately express my gratefulness for. Thank you.
1000-1400 is where you see the Stafford quite a bit. At least in blitz. Problem is that above 1300 most people knows the "refutation", but against that I just play Jonathan Schranz "magical" line, which is very dubious, but leads to some wildly entertaining games and surprisingly often wins. I think I win more in the magical line than I lose.
I miss Johnathan! I hadn't thought about him in a minute. Hope he's doing well.
@@kruksog He's still broadcasting tournament games though (on his Twitch).
@@sonphantrungso he does commentary on other games instead of playing any fun gambits himself? At least we still get to see him in chess
The easiest refutation is just e5 and d4
I'm 1300 playing exclusively e4 for the past 3 years maybe and have encountered the Petrov only a handful of times, i always play Nxe5 in i don't think i have ever encountered Nc6 once
Really looking forward to get more and more of this speed run. My best Chess series to watch on RUclips
Same here
same here@@George_Bland
Eric: Yadda yadda yadda opening theory yadda yadda.
Also Eric: I have to watch my time.
Also also Eric: *Checkmate out of nowhere.*
Thanks for posting this, Eric; I'm sure you're busy at this time of year, so, as much as I'd love to see a 3-hour speedrun epic, I appreciate you posting what you can.
14:09 And it took some IM magic to beat this guy - I'm not sure how many 1000-rated players would have seen that tactic in the blink of an eye!
Wow, really shows how well Eric knows the Stafford. Diffused all the dynamism from the position and ground black down with a better position
Tbf, it's more of the fact that the opponent diffused the attack himself. Should black go for Qe4/Qe6, the position would get trickier.
Christmas comes early. Finally a next episode and even featuring the Stafford. Thanks, Eric!
You are the most educative chess player that I watched.
Merry Christmas Eric and everyone!
It was great to have the world expert on the Black side of the Stafford Gambit to explain by example how to refute the Stafford as White!
48 wins streak. Interesting...
The fact that the opponent lost almost 100 points after the loss in the Stafford suggests that he or she is stronger than their rating. They played it pretty well really, until losing it the queen anyway.
How does that work? Why did they lose so much?
Opponent thinks Eric is moving slow because he's thinking, but instead he's just using him for a tutorial to half a million people lol
Oh no, the length of my Eric Rosen chess speedrun episode! 🥲
my elo went up almost 200 since watching your series. good stuff 🔥
Honestly for that 1000 rating he played super well
I wish you would show the Nc3 refutation sometime. I love all your Stafford gambit videos!
I want to see more games per episode
Yes, please! 2-3 games per video is the sweet spot for me!
The opponent Egathis that played the Stafford Gambit is 1600 in bullet (he just rarely plays rapid hence he lost 92 points on the loss.).
Very useful ideas for white to refute Stafford. Thanks for it, Eric 🙂
At least 2 games per episode, or more frequent episodes. I'm always waiting for a new episode to pop up
This game is a great example of why the "70% of games are lost because of tactics" statistics are misleading. Sure, you technically won by a tactic, but you really won from the strategic domination. Good strategy is what gives you more chances to win with tactics.
This is one of the better games so far in the speed run
The one we’ve all been waiting for 😢😅
Opponent played the Stafford nicely! I sometimes crumble when the initial traps don't work.
Eric Rosen is the Bob Ross of Chess ;)
A christmas gift from Eric!
Holy crap! I know it gets refunded but dude lost 92 rating points. I’ve never seen that big of a drop
It was probably a new account. The system needs like 10-15 to determine a proper rating range.
welcome back!
I would watch 100% of a 2 hour speedrun video.
Saw Hikaru diffuse the Stafford with ... Nc3 Bc5 h3, this is my go-to way of doing it, most people in this rating range aren't good at keeping the pressure on
17:25 in this position doesn't white just have Rxh7 followed by Nf6 to win a knight and trade rooks?
A little sad for a shorter video but all good. Nice instructive game!
Props to egathis, he fought well. Or she.
I think this length of video is good as well (comparing to the one with multiple games over 45min-1h). For me, analysing the game a bit further afterwards if you chose to leave the episode at one game would work even better (probably no coincidence that it becomes more similar to Danya's episodes :D).
Anyway, cool game, was really impressed by how the opponent played! No huge mistakes for a long time I thought. Sure a6 was slow, but they played to the needs of the position in a lot of ways
Oh wise and mighty one...
15:56 what if white played Be3, attacking the queen? What would black respond?
Black queen can take on B2 and if white bishop takes the black's bishop queen can take white's rook
This is my level so I like to see what Eric will do against various positions. Like the Strafford for instance.
My poor guy walked into the King of Stafford
egathis played impressively well for a 1029. Props.
That was a tough match!
After hxg4, is e6 a good move?
You ever going to do another few hour long tournament video again?
47 game win streak eh Eric? Interesting.
Under 20 minutes in an episode is easier to consume. I don't have to set aside so much time to get my Eric Rosen fix.
MORE OF THE SPEED RUN EPISODES
Eric looking jacked in the t shirt 👀
Thanks for the videos🫶
Is Eric’s Elo going up very slow? Is it somehow slowed from it being a speed run account?
What an insane game
Shoot. Now we have to wait another month for a speed run episode.
14:59 why opponent got -92 elo? Rating difference wasn’t too big
nice one there almost
Oh no! My gambit! Someone call for ambulance...
Forty-seven game win streak??
You're going to give Kramnik an aneurysm.
Hi. A doctor here. The correct expression would be "pop an aneurysm." Aneurysms exist how far more commonly than you think. And it also takes a long time to develop and does not happen overnight. You might be having a few. Most people never know until one pops and when it happens, that is instantaneous and can be catastrophic.
7:17 you can't take the pawn!
And also at 12:38 black will also win a pawn, so it's just a trade
Given that account still had a provisional rating and played much stronger than a 1000 I imagine that they knew it was you
stafford gambit guy is another thats gone up 400 rating points since this video.
longer videos please
Honestly pretty solid game for a 1000
If we exclude the Stafford Gambit choice this guy could have easily been up to 1600 elo.
Pulling out the Stafford Gambit at 1000 Elo is wild
On the contrary, that opening is very common and well known at that level, thanks mainly to Eric himself. I'd be more shocked to see a queen's gambit or a ruy lopez at that rating level. I myself play the stafford at 1200 elo and I don't even know any mainline petroff theory at all
goose!!
I am unclear why black Ng4 is a viable threat to white. you say it's hard for white to stop Kg4 but that square is so well defended, by the h pawn, and by the bishop queen battery
lets gooooooo \O/
How to beat Stafford Gambit??? Be Rosen talented
d3 refutation is to complicated and potentially still trappy. I play f3, as it is not very complicated, and neutralizes all traps easily.
Eric: "We have the first Stafford of the entire series...and I'm not the one playing it."
Me: Yeah... you're also not the one to be playing it _against._
Honestly, though...how good are the odds that Eric just destroyed one of his own viewers? Are there that many other places he could've learned the Stafford? 😆
You have destroyed the very thing you swore to become!
Kramnik is needed here
47 win streak..
Whats out for Kramnik.
Wish you'd played another game haha
Who does this guy think he is doing a one game episode, Naroditsky?
How many ads play during these videos, I’ve had 4 play and this video isn’t even 20 minutes long
Cannot abide levy's cursing will not watch another session with him apart of it. I really like your behavior though.
You can do better 3-4 games min do you think you are Daniel N?
POV: the opponent was stream sniping
Only 1 game smh 🧐
No way was that a 937 opponent without some help, whether human or engine I don't know...
The Stafford is very well known. I've gotten it refuted by sub 1000 players many times. Maybe they were all cheaters, but I doubt it. Usually when somebody accepts, they either know what they're getting into, or don't know at all
I guess it is NOT bullet speed run... 😂
Whoops i said my move wrong on this game im just tired today n i cant play a good game at all but white did the knight bird rook knight castle kings crown pending if other peice around possible to add station❤ i really love whites game this is all i do😊
Liebe Grüße von uns
Booo only 1 game, I wan't my money back :P
Clickbait - everyone knows the Stafford Gambit is unbeatable!
I'm partial to the Princeton Gambit myself.
@@MattePurple1 😂😂😂 got autocorrected - fixed it. But attending either Stanford or Princeton does seem like a gambit - spend all that money and hope to heck it pays off.
We're gonna have to find a name for this besides "SPEED" run. How about LONG run.
Still Speed btw. Speedrun here means the amount of games played in the smallest amount possible to reach the rating.
Shame on you playing against 1072 rated player . Go defeat some IM live.
slowest speedrun in history (its ok tho I'm still watching)
Speedrun not in terms of play hours, rather in the number of games played to reach that rating.
Ego stroker vid.
Ratings are refunded, and they are meant for instructional purposes (Eric can show tips to play against "dirty tricks" at low levels, like Wayward Queen Attack for example)
Nothing instructional about beating up weaker opponents. Tactical tutorials are informative, not these self-ego stroking speed-whatevers. @@sonphantrung
@@scottharvey6892 He doesn't play crazy/tricky lines in these games. He follows principles as closely as possible. This lets viewers of all ratings gain insight into common mistakes at their level. If you think this is an "ego-based" video, you must not be familiar with Eric.
The video starts out with him bragging about winning 47 games in a row against weaker?! Yeah, very insightful alright. Would be more insightful playing grandmasters and thought process .... not how to beat up a beginner. Might as well play stockfish at level 1 and point out it's mistakes too.@@MattePurple1
1000th like here. I love the video sir, but we need to ramp up the quantity/frequency 🫢🫢
No vid in a week and then you give us a meager 17 minutes 🫠
He has another channel he regular posts to as well, Eric Rosen Extra.
