We were out of our house for 2 months after the Thomas fire. Fighting AAA insurance was a PITA (they covered 50k of 80k damage). Do NOT attempt to clean this on your own. All surviving homes needed a deep clean and attic insulation replacement.
@keemburrleh Yes we ended up fixing the last 30k over time. Weird things like insurance was only going to pay to paint the worst 2 sides of the house even though all of it was bubbling/falling off. The front door was damaged but we couldn't prove the stain failure was heat related (it was). Everything was a fight, 500 dollars to replace insulation in a 2,400 sq ft house 🤡. Right after the fire they offered 1,500 if we'd sign off. We had windows that the frame shrunk and the glass shattered, 1,500 barely covers cost of a window. We lucked out and SCE removed 2 giant burned eucalyptus which would have been 5k...though SCE equip started the fire
If my home survived a fire and needs to be cleaned. I'm cleaning it. I'll buy a respirator and get the things out. If my family and friends want to help thats great. If not, I'm still doing it. New mattresses, Get clothing washed. Fans, open everry window. Have a carpet cleaning company come in and clean the carpets. Wet vac the sofa's. Replace the roof insulation if needed. Respirator. Shop vac's. Damn, crying and complaining is not how things are done. GET TO WORK !!.
Thank you for your comment. I wish the news with cover the important point that you brought up. There will be so many people that built up their homes but homeowners insurance will go up and will be extremely difficult to get another policy.
Here in the Carolinas, we are only now seeing the insurance and state adjusters, 6 years later, finally agree to fund repairs for prior events. The Ashville NC issue is stuck in the House with huge underfunding and insurance companies arguing if your house missing from the property qualifies as damaged. Katrina, Fort Mayers, Puerto Rico, etc... Should be a clue to how long it takes! Don't hire a cleaner or clean yourself, WAIT! The community will take months if not years to re-string poles, re-pressurize the water, gas lines and finally inspect sewage. They need to cap-off any leaking to prevent hazards. You will have vehicles coming and going for years lifting the dust back up from the construction cleanup and disposal while re-dusting your home inside and out. It may suck, but pay your mortgage and wait about 18 months to 2 years? I would empty the house and Ring camera the place to prevent squatters. You need the environment to be safe before returning, unless you want to sleep with a breathing mask. Your cost will be crazy for remediation of your home, once the supply issue is realized, also, the vultures who want to low ball you for the property my stop hounding you by then.
Unfortunately for the folks who lost everything their nightmare is just beginning. Dealing with bumbling insurance, Feds, State, County beauocratic red tape will drive anyone to drinking.
Get a reputable, professional house cleaning company. They'll seal the windows and clean everything. They'll also need to paint all the interior and clean out the whole attic of insulation and dust/debris.
There were people who risked their lives to stay and keep their house from catching fire! Now they have a smelly, sooty and maybe deadly, but unburned home in the middle of all the mess? Sadly ironic!

It will never be rebuilt to the previous historic, architectural, and botanical beauty it was. The building skill, quality materials, and affordability in many cases no longer exist. Many of those homes and their corresponding visual neighborhood cohesion are irreplaceable.
So you're paying for a mortgage on a home you can't safely live in, and you have to pay rent to live elsewhere until your house is cleaned up. In California, it kind of makes more sense to just be a renter and get renter's insurance.
@@genxx2724I agree, but even throwing out all possessions, stripping off all drywall, and getting new hvac and attic insulation is significantly cheaper than rebuilding.

Newsome and Bass will probably be recalled, but what does it matter? The citizens will elect different Democrats who will pick up where the others left off! Those whose homes burnt to the ground MIGHT switch parties but voters in other areas, like the Bay Area, aren't going to change their minds!
@KK-pm7ud Seems like you're the one who needs to be educated. They didn't create dry brush around those areas for the fire to grow. So try explaining again, and nothing Dump has mentioned.
People are funny. They're worried about the ash. One woman says the insurance is going to cover the neighborhood air quality! Meanwhile, they don't understand why insurance companies are pulling out of California. here was extensive flooding in low income neighborhoods in San Diego a couple of years ago. The water had all sorts of contaminants in it, including raw sewage. People were shoveling out their own homes and cleaning them up. If my home was full of ash and soot, all I'd need is for it to be wiped up very thoroughly with damp rags. California will keep setting absurd requirements and the cost of everything will grow out of control. More insurers will pull out of the state. Pretty soon your dog will have an accident on the carpet and you'll have to bring in a hazmat team. Just wipe down the surfaces with damp rags and get on with it.
@ yep, and ash is electrically conductive (it’s mostly carbon) and shorts out the spaces in a motor commutator. It’ll overamp and trash a vacuum cleaner with a brushed motor.

Why is there ash in people's homes? Didn't they seal their homes? That's just ridiculous. They should have closed all vents to the outside.
I’m working the recovery centers here in LA county, with a hundred mile an hour winds, the ash and embers still got inside homes that were sealed
I’m 4-5 miles away from the Eaton fire. Ash was everywhere outside and some inside, and the smell was quite bad. Clean, clean, clean.
Homes aren't hermetically sealed. This dust is very fine.
@ yep, and ash is electrically conductive (it’s mostly carbon) and shorts out the spaces in a motor commutator. It’ll overamp and trash a vacuum cleaner with a brushed motor.
Homes are not sealed, nor are they supposed to be. That would lead to humidity and molds.
