This being one of their older songs, I’d love to see you react to a song each from their following iterations. The Jon (drummer, curly hair) left for solo endeavors after this album, and the mustachioed bass player behind took up the third bot mantle as Hatchworth. Around the same time, Rabbit transitioned to female, and her vocal style has changed since. Hatchworth then left for solo endeavors, and their newest member, Zero, has an even deeper/richer voice than The Spine’s, yet they’ve incorporated him seamlessly into their music. SPG is my favorite band of all time, and I’ve loved every iteration they’ve ever had.
Id really like to see you react to SPG 's diamonds or "I dont have a name for it" The spine (silver) REALLY shows his range and talent in those songs, its insane
They go through a fair amount of lineups. Chris (The one on the right with the short hair that isn't shiny) is now isabelle, amazing voice, spine is still spine, just more updated. They switched the third 2 times now, every single one of them has amazing songs though. Highly recommend a listen. Songs are very deep, Malfunction is a very, deep song with it's meaning and message.
They also had a fourth member but she left shortly before they became what they are now (but her and John came back for the reunion show). John I have no clue why he left and then hatchworth the mandolin player in this video with red hair on the far left, left because he wanted to pursue his own goals. Now they have the new guy (for the life of me I can't remember his name.) I am still deciding if I like him or not.
The new guy is called Zero, played by Bryan Barbarin. I personally really like his character because he seems kind of naive, which works really well with Rabbit's complete insanity. It feels like she'd keep roping him into shenanigans.

as a member of the trans community, I think it would also be important to examine some of the more Rabbit-focused songs, even a comparison of the progression of how Isabella's persona has shifted to fit her gender identity? I'd be very interested in seeing how that might come across. A good comparison for before / after would be the iconic old but gold Honeybee and their newest song, Latum Alterum. "I don't know what's going on, but I like it." That was my exact statement all those years ago when I saw the video for "Honeybee". By the end of that day, I'd purchased a bunch of their music.
I've never seen your videos before until I just stumbled upon this one! I've been a fan of SPG for a few years now, and that's what drew me here. So glad you like them! They're awesome! Honeybee got me started watching them. It was good to hear all the positive feedback on them.
Some steampunk movies I enjoyed quite a bit: "Hellboy" "Wild wild west" or one of my favourite movies of all time "Van Helsing" with Hugh Jackman Steampunk is crazy-beautiful :).
First time I see someone who likes Van Helsing, too. Many people were so disappointed but I loved it for the visuals, the humour, the movie references - such a fun movie!
I'm a big fan of SPG, they're very talented and actually got their start busking on the street before getting popular on RUclips. The three main members have changed a bit over the years: the left-most one left the band a while ago, was replaced, and recently his replacement left as well and has been replaced; the Spine (the silver one) is still the same; the one on the right (twin sibling of the Spine) went through a redesign and is now a woman robot named Rabbit, but still shows off her ability to copy Spine's vocal range exactly in some of their live shows and bits.
Beth, I just started watching your videos a short while ago, and I've been really enjoying them. Your descriptions of what the vocalists are doing are always clear and informative, and I've tried to listen to other music with them in mind. It's been interesting, though I'm still trying to figure out what Kate Bush is doing in some of her songs. In this video, I was surprised to find out that SPG is an American group. The singer's vowel sounds, to me anyhow, sound almost Slavic or Nordic. You said you didn't know what the singer was doing during the "Hee-Yah!" section around the ten minute mark. This is more "spaghetti western" than "country & western" as you suggested in the beginning. He's doing a kind of Ennio Morricone-type vocalization that mimics cattle driver calls. I watch a lot of Italian westerns, and that music gets stuck in your head. So, yeah, great job. Looking forward to the next one.
What makes them special? The Spines incredible vocal range that surpasses the majority of singers I could name. Rabbits miming and comedy mixed with her singing and The Jons inputs.

amazed this song came up. spg isnt well know but are really great. been a fan for years
PLEASE watch more from this band
"I don't know what's going on, but I like it." That was my exact statement all those years ago when I saw the video for "Honeybee". By the end of that day, I'd purchased a bunch of their music.
I've never seen your videos before until I just stumbled upon this one! I've been a fan of SPG for a few years now, and that's what drew me here. So glad you like them! They're awesome! Honeybee got me started watching them. It was good to hear all the positive feedback on them.
Some steampunk movies I enjoyed quite a bit:
"Hellboy"
"Wild wild west"
or one of my favourite movies of all time "Van Helsing" with Hugh Jackman
Steampunk is crazy-beautiful :).
First time I see someone who likes Van Helsing, too. Many people were so disappointed but I loved it for the visuals, the humour, the movie references - such a fun movie!
Well this is a pleasant surprise. These guys are super talented and creative.
Yeah i almost put (and girl) but i meant it in the collective term, just figured its easier than explaining her transition.
oooo really want you to react to spine's diamonds cover for the vocals!! blew my mind first time i heard it
Their live performances are absolutely stunning too! They absolutely go for the same notes and are very talented mimes
That's left, right, and center from the way they're standing at the start of the video btw
"I don't know what's going on but I like it."
Welcome to Steam Powered Giraffe.
Devin Townsend Project-Deadhead-Live at Royal Albert Hall
Yass
Love watching Beth’s reactions
You MUST react to Dio - The Last in Line. He's (in my opinion) one of the best vocalists out there, not just in Metal
Well said!!!
Or maybe Stargazer, when he was singing with Rainbow. Rebecca Vocal Athlete lately reacted on him. And was blown away.
Ayyy another dio fan
Dio transcends metal, for sure. Absolutely amazing voice.
its nice to get some insight on these types of songs from someone of your expertise it's really interesting to hear about the technical side of this.
Steam Powdered Giraffe are a interesting group with very good singing .
Love SPG! Definitely check out more as they do many different styles! They also do everything themselves. Instruments, vocal recording, and videos!
Everything off their first 2 albums are CLASSICS. (all of their stuff is great, but as far as harmonies go they NAILED it on Album One and 2cent Show)
It's strangely entertaining to see your jaw slightly drop when the three of them hit their first unison notes in the beginning
Can confirm they're awesome live!

Me too! Animinneapolis veteran live viewer here. Bunny even accepted a commission from me for my son's 18th birthday
Steam Powered Giraffe has been my favourite band for 6 years now I'm beyond stoked that you've discovered them.
"I want to rub my face against his face" 🤣 not just you
Loved this. As an SPG fan, you don't see too much coverage really, so it was nice. Glad you liked them ❤️
Beth, I just started watching your videos a short while ago, and I've been really enjoying them.
Brian McDonald It really is remenicent of Ennio Morricone. Love his music.
I LOVE Steam Powered Giraffe. Their harmonies give me goosebumps. “Honey Bee” is a beautiful song too.
What makes them special? The Spines incredible vocal range that surpasses the majority of singers I could name. Rabbits miming and comedy mixed with her singing and The Jons inputs.
So nice to see new people discover this great band.
The Spine has such a beautiful voice. He can reach low and high notes so easily
I imagine these guys think very little about all of the tonal qualities as they perform. It all sounds so natural to me.
"it's very Beach Boys, but cool..." You just started a fight with someone's grandpa. So hilarious.
I love the Spine!
Hit us with that Diamonds cover, masterpiece
