      Sharla in Japan
      Hi Sharla,
      looking cute indeed!
Don't you already own a kimono like this? I would be surprised if you don't :)
Lately I wanted to try japanese sweets after watching one of your older videos about a service where you can order little boxes filled with random japanese sweets and snacks. I don't remember the name anymore. When I wanted to place an order, I had to face the sad fact that they don't ship to Hungary (yet?). :(

+martin toner I don't like any soda D; But if I had to pick one, melon soda is probably one of the best flavours! (After cream soda)

I think the last one are not made from gelatin, but kanten(寒天). Kanten is harder than gelatin, and made from seaweed! It is japanese traditional food. Also, it is really healthy too😉

Most of the sweets I can get at my local asian supermarket lack sweetness or have no sweetness at all. i don't know if they just don't put sugar in their sweets or the export products contain to much food preservers. Mochi cakes are only chewy here and have no taste what so ever.
Sweet buns or fried sesam balls with red bean paste we can get at japanese restaurants are sweet though.

I'm literally addicted to red bean paste..lol and eating it with green tea makes you feel so relaxed for some reason. I think because it's not so heavy compared to other types of sweets.

    • @3DJapan
      @3DJapan 9 лет назад

+Strawberry Mochi It's interesting, I like red bean buns and usually the paste is ver sweet and rich when I get it but a few months ago I got one in a local China Town bakery and it was not sweet at all, plus the paste wasn't mashed all the way I guess, it had full bean shapes in it. I will not go to that place again.

    • @parkchimmin7913

Phil Nolan I usually prefer my bean paste to be smooth and not too sweet. One time tried buying these store bought, frozen red bean bun and it was awful cause the bean paste was too gritty and sugary.

Another great thing about many wagashi, is that many are traditionally low on fructose since they're sweetened by mizuame instead of sugar, which is pretty much pure glucose, though because of that the sweetness is much milder. So it's healthy and delicious.

In fifth grade we had a traditional tea ceremony and we had these! I absolutely love red bean paste but now that I'm living in northern Michigan I haven't had any in 6 years! LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! YOU`RE SUCH A SWEET SHARLA! A few years ago, my dad brought me lots of japanese sweets, there was a cute box decorated with chicks and the candies were little chick-shaped treats which tasted sweet and bready-like. Also brought kind of mochi paste fold in triangles and filled with red bean paste. Hope you can find them, they were simply amazing!! Greetings from Mexico!

"Kin-gyoku(錦玉)" is made by dissolving the agar.
    So it's harder than jelly.
It also called an alias "Kohaku(琥珀:amber)".
You can make a surprisingly easy.
    錦玉は寒天から作られます。
    だからゼリーよりかたいんです。
    別名琥珀とも呼ばれています。
    寒天を溶かして砂糖と果物を入れて冷やして固めればいいので意外と簡単に作れますよ!

The jelly is likely made with agar agar. It's a vegan sea kelp based alternative to gelatin, which comes from boiling animal bones to mix the proteins with the liquid. It's more firm than gelatin and seems to hold its shape better

That and I am in love with red bean paste though it is difficult to come across here; when I do find it, I totally stock up! (thank you local, independent stores 😉)The kimono really suited you as well 😃 haha. What was it like shooting in the RUclips space? I hear they are ridiculously well equipped? 😃 thank you for sharing this with us!Chris

I found your channel the other day and I just cannot stop watching you! I am also super jealous of this video. It is insanely hard to find Wagashi and Dango in my area (NC). I'm placing an order soon with a company I found online but shipping is $50! Oh well I guess, gotta pay to play...or just to stuff my face with deliciousness! My boyfriend and I are actually very interested in the Japanese culture, him with cars & me with the food & just everything else! We talked about going to Japan as a vacation one day but then thought it would be even better just to get married there(in the far future) lol . I clearly went off topic...but anyways! I love your videos and I cannot wait to experience what you get to everyday. Love from America!!!

I've eaten all sorts of Japanese wagashi since coming to Japan, but they are never sweet enough. There is a temple near me famous for Umegae Mochi. I have had that twice, and both times I thought it was more like a potato chip with no sweetness at all. I've also had zenzai and dorayaki with shiro-an, but neither one of those is quite sweet enough for me. I've had plenty of wagashi, but I prefer candy from America.
However, the best wagashi I ever had was from Kumamoto. It was a cookie with a kabosu filling. OMG that was so good! It was sold as omiyage, but I ate it all myself. haha I wish I had more! Even if you came to Kyushu, I doubt you'd end up in Kumamoto. But, if you ever do, make sure to get some kabosu cookies!
Edit: I have been told that the cookie from Kumamoto is not wagashi, as it is not a traditional sweet. It is just a popular omiyage. So, I'll stick with my previous "wagashi is just not sweet enough to be good" attitude. :p

Traditionally and fundamentally, wagashi trys not to exceed persimmon or dried fruits' sweetness.
If you like strong flavor I recommend noshi-ume or kuri-kanoko! Mitsumane always represented the sweetest desert for when girls need to stress eat, in manga, of stories about old Edo to Meiji era.

I really wish I could get into red-bean sweets. Sometimes it takes a few tastes to actually love foods, in my case. But the red bean pastries I've had so far are painfully sweet! I tried the red bean/ice cream thing as well, which wasn't *too* bad, but... I can't pretend to like it. xD I had a mini party with all of my friends from Japan and they jokingly told me that if I said I didn't like red beans, I'd get instantly kicked off of the plane! Lol.

There is a nice wagashi-ya 5 minutes walk from where I live and they do really good wagashi. I like their ichigo daifuku and their dorayaki (they do different flavours). The last time I have been there, since it was really hot outside, they were offering cold tea and a little wagashi to go with it! It is a really nice place!

    着物がとってもにあっていてきれいですね。私はお団子、とくによもぎ団子とみたらしだんごが好きなんです。着物で食べるには色気のないものですが、普段よく食べる和菓子です。

Recently, I had a chance to try to promote a Japanese Traditional Sweets Shop to people from foreign countries.. Wondering if somebody already have introduced Japanese Traditional Sweets, I reached your channel. This is nice & cool! Thanks a lot.

I've never been to Japan but I have tried a red bean paste filled sweet (brought back from Japan for me) and the bean paste tastes similar to dates so if you like dates you will like bean paste

I love Wagashi, when I went to Japan last year I didn't get much time to try them, so now I will look out for them in Asakusa!
We have a really nice Wagashi shop in London; Minamoto Kitchoan and they do a Wagashi called Okashigure and it just melts in your mouth, delicious! I love having them with green tea :)

Very cool video... I don't like super sweet things, so I have a feeling I would like a lot of these.

I've never seen Kingyoku, but it looks amazing! I will have to buy some the next time I can.
My favourite wagashi though is Dorayaki with a azuki filling and also Daifuku. Yeah I love the red bean paste haha

I can only get dorayaki twice a year at a local anime/comic convention and I always end up pigging out on it cause its so good.
