Well Scout. You have awakened some memories. I was the eighth child of nine and we always had big dinners during the holidays. We had the big table in the dining room and usually 2 or 3 other tables as most of the offspring were also prolific. My wife and I had 11 children and just celebrated our 55th anniversary. All of us were taught respect for others and for the "rod" of authority in cases of mental lapse.

Didn't have a lot of furniture but dad always got the couch seat with the best TV view. I wouldn't even sit there when he was out lol. Never had to be told, just a respect thing. Missing character in today's society. Everyone ends up the same trying to be different. Normal folks stick out. Happy new years Scout

    ScoutCrafter,
We ate at a table in the family room next to the kitchen. My father sat at the head of the table. Our family consisted of my father, mother, brother, my aunt and her daughter, and two cousins. When everyone was home we had a family of eight. I can't recall if there was any order to the seating, other than my father at the head of the table.
Dinner was always at the same time. We all helped set the table and after we helped clear the table and do the dishes. Dinner was family time. It was a special time.
    Bob

Wow I haven’t heard anyone say hassock in thirty years! We had one when I was growing up in front of Dad’s chair. There was definitely a seating arrangement at the table. I sat on the side by myself, my sister and mother sat across from me. My father was at the head and my brother at the foot. Holidays were a different story, but my dad sat at the head, and his uncle at the foot. Then there was sort of a hierarchy at the table and everyone had a regular seat. Sadly, pretty much all of the people older than me and my siblings are passed on.
Great looking hammer after the mod.

Exactly the same in my family. My dad had a recliner. No one sat in it but him. He also had the seat at the head of the table. Actually it worked out great for him because he was a southpaw. And if he sat next to me or my mother, the elbows got in each other's way.
When we ate a formal dinner, he was always at the head of the table. When he passed, I got the seat beings I was the oldest son. Thanksgiving dinners I always ate at the kids table. Even into my twenty's. I didn't have enough seniority to sit at the grown-ups table.
The only "person" who had permission to occupy the recliner was the family dog.
The pecking order was Dad, Mom, the dog, kids.

52 here and I remember my parents living in the 70s had an all green living room. Like avocado green paint on the walls, darker green curtains and similar shaded green leather. I scavenged off the leather when the chair got thrown out and now I realize the green leather matches my Sorels that got a hole in the heel that I will patch with the matching green leather. It's weird how things like that match even decades later.
Dad sat at one end of the table and I got the other end. The women sat on the sides.

My dad was an academic version of Archie Bunker: he had his den, his recliner, and his captain’s chair in the dining room. He was well respected in our community, always seen wearing a suit. At home he was in boxer shorts and a V-neck tee, with a beer in his hand. What the intelligentsia of our city didn’t know is that, like me, he was a hands on guy not afraid of hard physical work. Anyway, you and I were both raised where respect and integrity ran the world.

John, great family memory’s. Our family was the same. Dad at the head. Not sure this has lasted with current generations where we see less and less respect all around. I’ve maintained this same tradition with my grandkids. Great body hammer customization. I bought a lot of cobbler hammers that all need new handles. Another of my long list of future projects. I’m very excited because this Friday I have an electrician coming over to update the garage electrical to hook up my Quincy compressor, add three additional 20 amp circuits, and add a 50 amp 220 for a future TIG welder. Very excited. Thanks for a great start to 2023..

Good job on the hammer John. Yes, Dad always sat at the head of the table, was always served first and always had right of first refusal on anything left. We also ate at the “kitchen table”. I remember the first time I ever saw a dining room. I said “so you have a special room just for eating?” I didn’t know why my friends parents were laughing at me. 😆

Even though I’m in Australia it was the same in our household, dad was always at the head of the table out of respect. He always did the carving as well. After he died we left his chair empty for the first year or two. If we went out for dinner I always tried to sit out of arms reach of my dad because back then if us kids played up we got a “clip round the ear” and at 6’6” he was a big man with a long reach and that huge hand built up a lot of momentum by the time it reached the side of my head😂. That’s just the way it was, none of this touchy feely can’t hurt their feelings crap, look where that has got us, no respect for anyone or anything. Even worse was the dreaded “wait until we get home” OMG that was the worst. That’s terrible people say? Yes, it was but I had the utmost respect for him and never answered him back even when I was bigger and stronger than him. He showed us so many times in my life how much he loved us and was always there for us. The day I went for my driver’s license I passed first go so he threw me the keys to his car and said “off you go, I’ll catch the bus” just so I could have that first drive on my own. That was 42 years ago and I remember it so clearly. Thanks for the memories Scout. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I was thinking similar things myself on Friday because it was two years since my grandfather passed. When he still had full charge of his faculties, he'd make himself a cup of coffee at 10am every day, and more often than not, he'd open a can of Guinness to drink with his lunch at midday.
I made a cup of coffee at 10 o'clock, exactly the way he would, and poured him a pint of Guinness at lunchtime. They were both used to "water" the plum tree we planted in his memory with some of his ashes scattered among the roots.

Your right John; head of the table or preferred seating chairs were always left opened for the head of the house, (Father, Uncle,, Grandfather, Mother or elder of a family or group) You may not see that today since respect and honor is often forgotten and in many cases not learned or past down from generation to generation. I worked in metal fabrication for 30 years and we often made special hammers for special jobs and forming problems. Good modification, awaiting your reveal on its use.

Evan to this day when my grandkids come to visit they get up and move some where else even though I say to them it’s ok to sit there.

It was the same at my house. Dad was always at the head of the table. Always had the big recliner. If one of us were in it, out of respect we would get up so he could sit. When it was time to eat, he would always pray over the food. Since he's passed, the torch was also passed on. Now I'm usually doing the praying over dinner, sitting in the recliner, and sitting at the head of the table. I think a part of me never grew up. Even though I'm at the head, I still wish he was around to continue on in that role. He was really good at it.

I used to do something very similar to that short 4lb. sledge I mentioned. When it was new. I used bare copper wire and solder. It was to keep the handle intact, in the event of the inevitable bad lick hitting an axle stud. I ran mine right up to the hammer head. The copper was soft enough so that it didn't mess the axle stud up too bad. I had just about forgotten all that.

I remember my father had had his heart attack, they took him to the hospital and they were working on him and it takes days and we all went back to my parents house and we sat around the table talking about it and then we look over at Dads chair and everyone got quiet.

His chair in the living room no-one else wanted to sit on, he has back issues and uses the hardest, most uncomfortable chair known to mankind. My mother, though, always had the comfy chair - and like you said, if she entered the room anyone in it would give it up. Here at home only the dog sits in my spot and he moves over when I come into the room. And then as soon as I sit down, the cat now has her spot and jumps up on me. That's a beautiful latern. But you really had me at the Amish part! Lanterns are such an interesting item to collect. I planned to buy one each year but started thinking about the years and space I've got so I'm shied away from that plan a bit 😂 Happy new year!

Don't store them with fuel in. I had one in my kitchen on a cast iron plant hook and the fuel just evaporated away over the years. I never thought it could do that!

John , you were raised with respect and it shows with all your ventures. My father also sat at the end of the table. My mom said it was ok. Just kidding. My mom was the one you did not cross. They were my best friends. I like what you did with the hammer head. The handle, I’m not sure I like it. You did save it and it’s strong. I did not lite any of my lanterns, our weather was not understanding. Thank you for all the entertaining shows and Happy New Year.

We sat with many relatives in a raher small room and ate together. And there was veryl little space available for everyone. That is unthinkable today. The Ball Peen Hammer modification looks for me like a Viking warrior hammer, but its coming out so nice. Thanks

Like the hammer repurposing, hope you saved the cut off piece, be nice to pop in a vice to use as an anvil for riveting or shaping light gage metal, anyway, I’d spend time finding a use for that, just to justify my hoarding tendencies.😂 my life growing up was pretty much the same as far as the head of the table and just respecting him and my mother. Thanks for the video sir.

    Happy New Year John.
I remember mealtime being kind of regimented in our house.
You got 3 meals a day, you weren't allowed to miss a meal and you had to eat at the table.
This was always the same even on days like birthdays or Christmas.
I remember I would always be itching to run into the living room Christmas morning because that's where all the gifts would be but I couldn't go in there until I had breakfast it was torturous.😂
Table manners too like no elbows on the table etc.

For cuts like that I really appreciate the 7 " circular saw and I leave one metal-cased saw with a metal cutting blade in it at all times. It's faster than the angle grinder because most circular saws are 2hp or thereabouts. Double/triple the power of the angle grinder. It can cut deeper. I think you get a flatter cut, too. I think you get a lot more cutting done before you need to replace the disc, also. I just buy the metal cutting discs by the 10 pk from HF. I am almost out of them now.
Well 2023 is already memorable for me as, for the first time in my life, I had to use a fire extinguisher yesterday in my basement shop. So there I was trying to undue some pedals from a cheap adolescent sized female bike and they were rusted in so I decided to use some heat. I wanted the 3 gear ashtanbula crank for an electric trike build I am doing. I lit up a cheap amazon propane torch ( the good bernzomatic self-igniting one had walked away ) and it became a fireball in my right hand. I did not even realize until hours later it burned half of my beard off on the right side.
So I drop it and go for an extinguisher. In the meantime it burned through my metal cutting saw cord and my newest Flexerilla air hose. It was quite scary at this point I realize I have a 3 foot fireball wanting to become a bomb. I spray it out, it comes back to life, I spray longer and harder this time mostly emptying the large extinguisher.
I grab a rag off my table saw and bring the hot torch outside where it happily went into a snow bank.
Vacuuming out that fine extinguisher particle dust was a PITA too. I think there is still quite a bit of it around various items even though I vacuumed and emptied the Black & Decker canister 5 times. That dust is pervasive!
I bought a 5 pc ball peen hammer set from HF that goes up in 1/2 lb increments and as I never use the 8 z one maybe I will do this to it. I have been thinking it would be nice to maybe start using some hammers as punches so I could whack away with my R hand w/o ever worrying about hitting my bad left hand. Love the project and can not wait to see where you take this.
Just started snowing here. Been kind of a brutal winter thus far. Cheers!

Happy New Year Scoutcrafter! Very nice modification on the hammer.
Both our parents had their seat of choice at the kitchen table and the den where they read the newspapers and watched television. Needless to say my brother and I sat on the floor for many years except when our father was on night shift or “cateye”; my brother being older got the seat. My New Year’s resolution is to not travel during the holidays; just sayin’

I would suggest turning down part of the hammer head on the next one and make it look more like a body hammer but I'm not sure your lathe is up to the task.......Might be able to chuck it up and rough it out with the angle grinder then finish it with the lathe cutter.
I love modifying tools but I'll never forget the time we needed a special wrench and I went up and bought a brand new 1-1/2" combo wrench, brought it back to the shop and said I think we can heat this up and bend it to the shape we needed. Next thing I know my partner had it red hot and was bending away, it had to be done but torching a brand new wrench hurts my soul.
