Thank you to Southord for sending this to me for review :-)
got mine from UK Bump Keys. Always good for me to get items within EU to avoid import taxes
That is an awesome portable pick set! I think I may have to get one of those for an EDC.
The flex side to side even while you were bracing the bottom with your finger was unnerving. Are you used to the flex?
@@roybrown8077 To my knowledge, that kind of flex is normal and even desirable. In metallurgy it is referred to as elastic deformation (which is more or less just a fancy term for flexing). At such a thin thickness, if it were any more rigid then there would probably be a high risk of snapping in two. I own a lot of lock picks from a handful of different manufacturers. The cheapest set of picks I own don't flex much and I discovered the hard way that they will break easily under too much pressure. The more expensive picks have a springy flex to them which I believe is by design.
Roy, I always flex to the side with any pick when picking. It’s just a habit, but it works and I don’t snap picks hardly at all :-)
Great idea with the TOK tensioner in there. Also, you can easily modify picks or even make your own for this. It is a great holder and you can store them in the body as well. Just excellent.
I genuinely like it :-)
It's amazing they can fit 16 pics and a tension wrench in there.
It’s tight! :-)
I bought one of these and had the same idea about the tension tools. Ended up making a little TOK tensioner out of a hammered bike spoke that fights right in the barrel. Works like a charm!
Love your review!
I have ordered this set for my EDC bag!
I hope you like it!
I finally got one of these and I'm impressed. I absolutely love it. I didn't realize that there is so much space in it. I was able to it a few shims, a top of the keyway tensioner, a home made feeler tip(made from a window wiper insert), and a few other things in it along with all but like 4 picks(which I don't use much).
I really like this one!
Iam not really into carrying picks on me,but this is one of the nicest pick pens I have seen. You scolded me on it. Getting one today. Thank you Lock Noob. Take care brother
And you my friend :-)
I have to say I am impressed with this hole package!!
Neat compact, great profiles and thin shanks. The solid way the pick tips are held is great!
I have a lot of pick sets and a few Jackknife pick sets, but I very well may just treat myself to this!!
Great review!!
👏👍👍👏👍🐈
It’s a nice treat! :-)
Thanks for the great review. This looks like an excellent little kit, it’s very compact and pocket size, which I think for travelling around with is better than a leather pouch. Good quality too.
I really like it :-)
Great review! I love Southord picks. This will eventually make a nice addition to my collection. 👍
I love the MAX profiles :-)
Fantastic review, this really does look like a great bit of kit, nice that it has so many pick tips & your extra TOK tensioner really will make it a complete kit. 😎👍
It’s really fun to play with and it works well too :-)
Good looking kit. I think the price puts it out of the range for most hobbyists but for a working smith it could be a good back up or EDC. Thanks for demonstrating it.
Thank you :-)
I have always liked southord products. When I first started I bought there electric pick gun. It's really well machined also. Don't use it much now but it's still nice
I use them all the time :-)
Thanks for the great review!
I've been carrying the Southord Jacknife for months but I have been wanting to try this pen.
Have a look at the RCS jack knife from southern specialties. Get the metal one. It is the best on the market and easy to customize.
the pen set is great. it just takes a long time to swap picks and put everything away
I like it :-)
It does look very nice for the experienced pickers. Thanks for sharing this Ash.
Thanks friend :x)
Love the video. Seems like southord picks and rakes are very well made and sturdy. I would love to get one of those!
It’s cool 😎
Very nice review of a great looking pick pen. Southord do make nice picks and this looks like a nice pen set compared to others I've seen. Also has a bit of a James Bond look in a way. Awesome job mate 👍🤘🖖🍻
Very bond lol... just need a laser added.... :-)
That’s incredible! The kit and the review.
Thank you :-)
That looks like it would be incredibly handy. Sorting through all the tips in the dark would be a bit of a chore, but that's to be expected. I'm sure they'll offer just about every profile you could imagine.
Didn't realize I was the only one here until I saw the like counter go up to 1 when I hit it. And it said "no views".
Yeah, I suppose in the dark it could be fiddly, but these tools always have a compromise for its compact size :-)
Great post good tip about the extra tensioning piece too add and demonstration
Thanks 🙏
Well LN, I have to say, your review was quite compelling. I just couldn't resist, so I ordered one. It just showed up in the mail today and I have to say, it is pretty darn cool. It's definitely going to live in the inside pocket of my jacket. I like having picks handy just in case I lock myself out of something or someone else does and needs me to rescue them. For the tension tool dilemma I have opted to keep a Sparrows Tuxedo case with a nice range of top and bottom of the keyway tensioners within the same jacket pocket since it doesn't take up much extra space. The combination of this pick set along with the case of tensioners makes for a pretty thorough EDC set.
That’s cool and I’m glad you like it - I thought it was great! :-)
@@LockNoob It really is. It's such a compact way to carry a wide range of profiles. Its impressive that it manages to be so comfortable to use. If I were to change anything about it, I might make the tip taper all the way back to where the knurling begins. With ordinary picks I like to support the shank of the pick on top of my middle finger. I can't do that as easily with this because of the diameter of the handle. I think tapering the tip a little bit more would alleviate that. It's not a big deal though and I still really like it.
Man I find your reviews of lockpicking tools inside the best at youtube. Keep doing =)
Thank you :-)
Great bit of kit, I've been looking at these and waiting for a decent review, thanks for doing one.
I was expecting a giveaway however based on the fact there isn't one as you're going to use it yourself, I figure that speaks more than the review did.
Shortly I shall be checking out their website. 👍🏼
Yeah. This one is mine, lol :-)
Great Review! with just the addition of the top of the key-way tension tool make a great all rounder very nice
Thank you :-)
I have one of them & i do like the feel & feedback from it, it feels nice in the hand & its great that all the of the picks are in a great place when you need them.
I do like the TOK tensioner idea, im going to have to make one of them for mine.
Great looking kit, fantastic review, many thanks
Thank you :-)
Played with Chinese made picks for a few years and they do work,I consider those my training picks now after buying a set of Southord`s,I went for the PXS-14 kit,WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! They are the dog`s boll***`s compared to the things I was using,I almost looked like a Pro the other day when my mum couldn`t open the shed lol,,Great videos mate ,Keep `em coming :D
A good set makes a huge difference :-)
Had mine for 2 years edc after Bill did a review. good kit.
I like it :-)
Really great review my friend I will have to order one some day. 😎
Thank you :-)
the pen fits perfect inside the center fold in my normal southord leather case, that I always carry. Do not use the pen much, but a great backup selection to have by hand if needed.
That’s a cool idea :-)
Very cool set deffenetly a Christmas wish
It’s very cool :-:p)
great review looks great all that fits into the handle amazing
I like it :-)
nice, i've got one of these in my bug out bag, but i do dig it out from time to time to play with, the feedback is surprisingly good. i did have to make some choices to the pick tips and tension wrenches i wanted as they dont all fit back back in the handle.... but great bit of kit, always loved southord picks!
and i loved the fact a w-rake zip tool was included, its a bit old-school, but there were no bogota's around when i started picking - so i actually prefer it, shame more companies don't include them in their kits these days!
Very very nice kit. Thanks for doing a review on it.
Thanks :-)
I just got mine and the pictures and videos don't do it justice. Don't get me wrong, what I mean is that the pen feels like like your holding an expensive pen. It's not bulky at all.
This and Bosnianbills review sold me on getting one.
Awesome, thanks 🙏
I like the variety of hooks in this one. This one looks pretty good...
I like it :-)
First off...THANK YOU for reviewing this set.
I have the same set and like it very much, but actually prefer another pen I have with a plastic body and metal collet. The bonus is, you can buy additional/replacement picks for it on southords site. I also used a file to taper my tensioners so they might be used TOK. I also kinda toyed with the idea of bending out the end of the pocket clip to serve as a TOK. My plastic one has some fake company logo on it to make it look like a real pen and you can turn the inner collet upside down to fit a short pen refill in it so it completely looks like a pen and even writes.
Who makes it?
@@LockNoob I can't remember who makes it or where I got it, but the fake company logo on the side says:
DINO the brand of high quality
Smart commander engineer
So it looks like a company promo item. I like it for how well concealed it is, and the pin vice is much better that the one in the Southord set. It came with less picks, and will only hold about 12, but I supplemented it by buying replacement picks from Southord and choosing which 12 I wanted. I do the same thing with my H&H jackknife kit which Southord also sells replace picks for.
Hello again it's Lock Noob and in front of us are 16 picks that I spent an hour spacing out perfectly.
Pretty much, yeah, lol :-)
I have one of these and can confirm that it's brilliant. The one tiny complaint is that you can't quite fit all the tips it comes with inside it, plus you can only really fit one of the three or four tensioners it comes with. Two at a pinch, but it rattles a bit. Still more than enough though. Plus not everyone is going to like every tip, so you can just load it with your favourites.
Yeah I really like mine!
I slipped a small neo dynium magnet rod in the top with the rest of the picks (got rid a few) great for navigation and stops all the picks going flying, when you tilt upside down.
Nice tip :-)
I have wanted one of these sets for a while but the southord pricing puts me off. Went with a sparrows night crawler and a metal RCS jack knife set together for something way better at around the same price point.
By the way, those tensioners don't have different thicknesses. They have differing widths. For tensioners with varying thicknesses, look up the longhorn tensioner set from southern specialties. They are amazing. I would also recommend trying their bullnose tensioner on things like kw1 cylinders.
Good vid!
Dang you Lock Noob......now I want one. LOL I am a real fan of Southord picks. Especially the euro picks they are strong and skinny picks. 👍👍👍👍🧡
Yeah, Southord do great profiles :-)
@Lock Noob I really love your videos! I like your calm and smooth demeanor whilst picking even the toughest locks. Makes things seem easy, but at the same time, its encouraging because you don't seem to get frustrated.
It's too bad you don't do giveaways, but at the same time I like that your channel has dedicated subs that are here for your videos, not your giveaways.
Keep being awesome brother!
Do you have an email?
Hey Jay, I do giveaways all the time :-) 2 full pick sets just last week and more to come soon :-) maybe you’ll even win one :-) my email is locknoobcontact@gmail.com
looks fantastic
It does :-)
Nice review Ash my friend remember these are a bit pricey for me🇬🇧😎👍😊
Yeah, it’s not super cheap, but it’s very cool :-)
Fantastic bit of kit, i love it. Looks very well thought out. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend Ash.
You have a great week friend :-)
Great review!!
Thanks LPG :-)
Man I always wanted one of those. If looks very practical
It’s pretty cool :-)
A great addition would be a collet to accept dimple picks. Could probably source it from a pin vice though
This could accept dimple flags made the same way as the picks, no problem :-)
I experimented with an exacto knife handle for something like this, but boring out the handle and threading it, and a cap was a little beyond my machine shop. I then looked at using a gutted aluminum penlight. Abandoned the project due to time constraints. This looks like the solution to me. I would also add tension tools, maybe another twisted TOC tool slotted in below their pen clip, to lay flat along the barrel. Dunno, I would have to hold one in my hand... which I likely will! Thanks for the great review.
ruclips.net/video/im2USy7VZ-U/видео.html
@@LockNoob Yes, I remember this. Good idea, but no storage for additional picks. I was trying to use a cylindrical x acto knife handle as my base, but...
A double ended pin vise will work well
www.msdiscounttool.com/catalog/product_info.php?csv=gg&products_id=119100&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqs3rBRCdARIsADe1pfT7t29MOmAmQG0n9y6QVnCpP2cCQjcLmyx2xa6TjoMv7BKYFzBnijcaAj9ZEALw_wcB
Looks really good if I was being picky I would leave out the ball picks and put a flag and a Bogotá maybe two flags if they’d fit and your tok idea bang on great review 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah, I never use ball rakes and I love a good Bogotá :-)
Great review👍 Will a Sparrows undipped handle fit into this collet? If so, a quick trim for length and you could really expand your profile selections. Good idea on how to add tensioners. This could make an excellent EDC 🍻
Maybe, with some modifications! :-)
Great Review!!.
👍😀👍
I want it lol!!!
Thank you :-)
I used to carry around a Southord Jackknife before replacing it with the Sparrows Night Crawler set, but I feel like this'll be in my jacket pocket soon... Looks great!
Add a real short hook, a medium hook, and a snake rake to the night crawler, then add some heavy bars, some bottom of keyway tensioners, and a handful of tiny bypass tools and you've got my edc back pocket set.
@@dougyanez1710 I was really hoping for them to make the heavy bars in a knurled finish as well. Really like the finish on the Night Crawler bars, but I always use the heavy ones if they fit.
That’s a cool tool too. So much choice! :-)
@@LockNoob Still using and liking it? I find myself coming back to this video every now and then because I just really like the idea of a good quality pick pen...
@@LockNoob 1 year later and here we go again... still haven't pulled the trigger on this one :')
@LockNoob thank you for the great review
Ik bought this set mostly for the handle. I am a beginner trying to get better and with this set an abus lock is easy to pick! This handle allows me to add my beginner picks by loosing the handles and grinding it till it fits ✅😎
One question; if you start with an unknown lock with no key, do you try different picks first for fast opening or starting right away with single pick and keep holding on?
Do you have favorite picks to add to this set? Yes I know it is all personal but there must be universalist picks everybody loves right?
Greetz from the Netherlands!
i made a similar thing a few weeks ago using the H&H jackpick, a scalpell handle and a file
Cool :-)
Ohh that's nice, time for a purchase methinks
Love southord's picks.
**Edit for spelling
Me too :-)
More choices than the HPC one gives you. A flag or two might be a nice addition.
Yes, a mixed flag rake and hook set would be very cool :-)
Super cool design idea. How much spare room is there when all the pick tips are packed away? Enough for 1-2 more pick tips and a Peterson prybar maybe? With some minor additions I think it could deal with any pin-tumbler lock on the planet.
There is no spare room at all, but I take out a few tips I’d never use and add a tension tool
Sounds about right - three snake rakes is overdoing it a bit if you ask me 😂
I'm sold!
NIce bit of kit. I use a Southord C2010 kit and I love it. Would it be possible to add a TOK wrench to the end of the BOK wrench? Just an idea.
I’d say it might be possible :-)
I actually use a twist drill off the internet the same way, I'm very enthusiastic about this.
I have always wondered why all picks have a handle made of steel... all that matters is the tip, making the handle steel as well increases the price of the material like 10x. Maybe having only a plastic handle would break soon, but how about one handle on which you can mount the tips? this has to save a huge amount of money, the drawback is it takes a few extra seconds to switch the picks, but beginner does not care... this set is perfect...
Thank you Lock Noob
Thanks Jim :-)
I really want to start lockpicking and I want to start with a good set. But I’m doubt of buying the sparrows tuxedo or this set. What do you recommend to a beginner?
Very cool!
Sure is :-)
Looks nice, nice picks. Personally I hate pyramided picks, love the snowman for locks without security pins. But in the end it’s just a big gadget, and with all picks in it, it probably is heavy in use compared to a single pick. So unless you get everything out of there, and being on the road that might get messy.ice, nice picks (personaly I hate

end its just a big gadget, and with all picks in it, it probably is heavy in

and being on the road that might get messy.
I can see how it wouldn’t suit some people :-)
I defo will
Great great review, SouthOrd are not my favorite picks (love the profiles but not the steel they use) but this set looks simply awesome, love the hooks profiles. which is the thickness of the picks?
Thanks for showing my friend ;o))
Yo conozco este set desde hace tiempo y me encanto. Saludos
0.025 :-) try Southord MAX Picks. They are Max Yeild 301 and very, very strong :-)
@@LockNoob Cool, thanks for the info buddy ;o))
They should make it like highlight pen. It got more space for tensions and picks 😛
I like your thinking, though that could be a bit bulky :-)
Thanks for the review! Does it rattle, make noise in the pocket?
It can do if you don’t carry enough profiles :-)
Hi buddy! Very helpful and I bought one...🙂😄😁😊😊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇬🇧🇬🇧🇨🇦🇨🇦🇦🇺🇦🇺🇹🇻🇹🇻
Cool!
i like to see a lishi 2-1 pick designed for euro and rim cylinder pin locks. where you can change the pick tool to a hook and diamond ect
I think the huge range of keyways would make that too hard to make :-)
Nice bit of kit. I would buy one but, unfortunately I can't carry picks with me. We got a screwed up law in Tennessee and it might get me in some trouble
I wouldn’t recommend carrying picks about unless you are a professional anyway, regardless of the law, but if you do need a portable set, it’s pretty cool :-)
First, a description of the set I have to compare this one to, which I'll try hard to keep short: I bought a similar, albeit far less expensive, Chinese set with a handle, 12 pick tips, 3 Z wrenches, and I think, two twisted L wrenches. I think one main difference (besides having fewer pick tips,) is that the handle isn't hollowed out for tip storage, and I believe it's some type of steel, as it's far more dense than aluminum. It was supplied with a very nice, zippered, "pleather" case, about the size of a long wallet, and shorter than your average checkbook. Now, the comparison: my set has proven itself to pick open locks that just laugh at my Peterson or Swallows picks. They are actually smoother and shinier from the factory than any other pick I've bought which, admittedly, isn't nearly as many as folks who've been picking for even just a couple of years...but still, they've a noticeably better finish from the factory than at least the two notable companies I've mentioned. Now, the ultimate question: would I buy this set? Yes, once I get to the point where I need a backup set when I'm just out and about.
I have the set you are talking about and they are very thick. Too thick for stuff like American padlocks or master LOTO cores. I would recommend finding a slimmer alternative before moving to more challenging locks. It will make your life much easier. But don't lose the two top of keyway tensioners with that cheap set! They are gold.
Doug Yanez I forgot to say that this was the first set I ever bought, and you're quite right, they are very thick. I've since moved on to other, better quality tools like the Peterson and Swallows tools I mentioned above in my original comment. One modification I made was to put 3 rubber O-rings in the 3 grooves on the handle. It gave me a better grip on it.
@@jamesthe-doctor8981 lockpicktools.com has way cheaper picks that are great quality. But their short hooks are better when you mod the tips a bit. Still, best prices on the market for pro quality stuff. I would never recommend anyone buy Peterson stuff because of the insane pricing and the company's ego. Even sparrows is a bit steep, but worth it for a certain few proprietary picks like their worm or tron or atilla.
I rarely use the little cheap pen set these days, but the top of keyway tensioners with it are my favorites. I will probably give the rest of the set away soon. It works great on things like kwiksets, just too thick for the stuff I practice on.
Doug Yanez I will check that site out soon, thank you. I'm still very new to this sport and have a lot to learn, and I must recently learned that Peterson and Swallows tools still need to be polished at least a little, and with that cheap set being so highly polished from the factory, spending so much more for the "high quality" ones has been leaving a bad taste. One of the guys who does a few videos every week got so disgusted with Peterson that he gave all his Peterson tools away to a lucky subscriber. Anyway, I figured that since I'm spending so much time and effort finishing picking tools, I might as well try my hand at making some of my own. I've gotten a few pieces of stock from which to work, so only a little time will tell.
I had that set. I liked it but it wasn’t any more portable than a standard set and needed a lot of finishing. Still pretty good though if you put in the time :-)
I know that you video is already 1+ year old, but I'll try to ask you a few question about this set that recently caught my eyes. But first, thank you for this review! I already liked the set, but you finished convinced me about it!
Well, first, do you still have and use them after all this time? Any update on your opinion on them after this whole year together?
At 4:25 you say that they are in .025 and goes well with the europeans keyways. For my understanding I often see .015/.018 suggested instead for the region because they are most of the time too thick to be able to navigate easily, actually the ones (a cheap set from Amazon) I have started with don't really slide in the copy of my front door lock I have (a standard 5 pin Opsial euro cylinder). If it is the same case for the NPS-2000, do you think it may be safe to polish them to be able to get a thinner size without ruining their sturdiness?
I have this set in a spart grab kit I have. the profiles are still excellent. I pick 90% European locks and even though 0,015 picks are useful, i prefer 0,018-0,025 with low shank heights as they give better feedback
Thanks! :)
THAT one made me drool... Nice EDC.
A shame it will top 150 US$ with shipping and Brazilian taxes.
Southord robs people with their pricing. Look at the RCS metal jack knife from southern specialties for a better deal.
Ouch! :-)
Great video. Do all 16 picks fit in the body? I can't get them all in there. Any tips?
I can just about do it by having some tip up and some down but I tend to leave 2-3 out so they are looser :-)
@@LockNoob I got 15 in and they fit just fine.
Put ten stacked tip-up, and in the sides of those, put three tip-down on one side, and two tip-down on the other side. They won't be too tight to extract, and not too loose to jingle. And just leave one tip outside.
Hi Noob, long time no speak.
Could you double the tension tools up and still screw the top on, so carry two or more?
unclear steve henke you could I think, but it would look a bit odd :-)
@@LockNoob as long as I could still clip it on my overall pocket I'm having one of these for work. My first kit was a Southord and I really rate their gear.
Which would you say is better, this one or the Jack knife one they offer. Strictly based on use
The pen set is more useable imo
Just about the right size nice in the hand, not too big not too small. Locknoob September 2019 :-)
Lol :-)
I would try to make an attachment that allows it to function as a pen.
What are the ball rake and snowman picks used for?
Wafer locks, mostly
I just bought this a week ago. My only issue is getting all the picks back inside the pen body.
Yeah, it’s possible but tight. I leave some of the ball picks I have never, ever used out :-)
I really want to pick one of these up to replace my jackknife and creditcard set. But can't justify the price at the moment.
RCS metal jack knife from southern specialties or a sparrows night crawler with a few custom additions are my goto pocket sets. Better than this, cheaper, and just as convenient to carry.
@@dougyanez1710 I typically carry the dangerfield serenity kit aroudn with a few things swapped arund like a peterson 1 hook and gem, and a sparrows city rake. But thats in my work bag. I would love to have something for my car thats better than the jackknife.
@@x9x9x9x9x9 for a car or bag kit, I recommend buying a sparrows tuxedo case and filling it with all your favorite picks from southern specialties for starters, then modding a few picks, and adding a sparrows Bogotá/worm combo and a full set of good tensioners. Should cover everything you need while on the go aside from specialty stuff or bypasses. This pen set word be fumbly to put together for a quick pick job. Better suited to situations where you have lots of time and won't lose dropped parts, like practicing in your car while waiting for the wife.
I carry a Sparrows EOD set as my second kit, but now I also have this as a travel set. I like them both a lot :-)
i would like it to be $50 rather then $62. for $3 more your at the sparrows monstrum set and they have a bunch of smaller sets that comes with nice cases for $50 and under. its not the same thing as the southord NPS-2000K pocket pen but they are all very portable in a nice case and easier to use being proper picks with better tension tools. the big plus is you won't have to nick your neighbors wiper blades unlike with the southord pocket pen.
I agree the price puts it in reach of some other seriously good kits, but this fills a different niche than a standard kit... I guess it depends if you feel you think it fills a need you have personally :-)
Looks cool but it would be a pain in the ass. To change picks while picking
Ive got a master M5 padlock with level 9 security rating how easy is it to pick
A 9 on master's security scale is a 2 on any other realistic scale. Stick a paperclip in there and there's a 20% chance it will just open. If not, just jiggle stuff around while playing with the tension. It won't take long.
This are very, very easy locks :-)
Were you able to fit all the picks in the handle?
You can. Just
@@LockNoob How?
I'd like to see an electric lock pick this size.
nice.. shame the price does not start with a 4 :)
It isn’t cheap, but I can see why. Fun set to have as a backup for sure! :-)
Hola donde comprar esas ganzuas.
Looks good, but comes from the USA, so is subject to import duty. I'll wait until after brexit, and see if the duty is lowered or scrapped.
Not sure what makes you think that will happen.
@@01bigtrev Well, if the UK and USA do a trade deal (politicians keep mentioning it) then import duties may be reduced (I hope).
Geoffrey Scott if your interested this is avaliable on
www.lockpickcanada.com/default.asp
Under the southord lock pick area. Canada got greaat exchange and your probably looking at about 14 import duty that will be offset with the great rates you will be alright.
Yeah, import duty is a pain :-)
Xx
I want it
I don’t blame you :-j
I want one. can you ship it to mexico
I’m sure Southord might ship there. Check their website :-)
I notice you have a habit of flexing picks to the left while picking. I do this when stressed or rushing my way through pick jobs. Is this something you do for the camera angle? If you do it all the time, you should focus on keeping your pick hand relaxed and keep the whole pick lined up straight with its path around the warding. Flexing a pick sideways makes it bind more on warding and hurts feedback in the long run.
It’s probably just a bad habit. I seem to do alright, but thanks for your concern :-)
