Yeah, the contactor was suffering from a bad case of professional burnout.

Depends on the contamination on the contactor. Oily metal dust makes a good heating element. Wood dust just carbonizes and blows off. Hydraulic oil and dust would make a pretty good resistor.
and a piece of paper, just getting in there and covering part of the contact pad makes for a great... 'thermal event'.
Those contacts were gone. LOL.
They had better things to do.
I would also wipe down those contacts with isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner. Don’t want any contaminants on the contacts which will cause resistance and lead to early failure.
We usually use electric motor cleaner as needed
