  • Back to Doug and Tifini Jolley's HUGE 18'X43' Sn3 D&RGW Third Division to check out the AMAZING scratch-built structures. AND contest structure "Lucky Joe's Bar".
    Lucky Joe's was built totally board-by-board down to the most minute details. As the building next door was torn down, the inside of one walls can be seen showing detail down to the cloth wiring.
    The layout and model were featured at the 2019 National NMRA Convention in Salt Lake City Utah.
    The D&RGW's Third division is represented on this double deck 18' x 43' Sn3 layout. The line between Gunnison and Ridgway, Colorado is included with a freelance connection of the San Migual and Southern, on the Ridgway branch, and a connection with the Timber Creek Railway near Gunnison. These connections were added to generate a bit more operating fun on a line that seen very little traffic in the 50's, the era modeled. Operation on the D&RGW is basically done in a chronological order using car cards. Include is a daily passenger run, a daily freight, a coal run, and a stock extra. Several locals are included, as well. The Timber Creek operation incorporates a run to the tipple for live loads of ore and then a run to the smelter for dumping in the rotory dumper. The coal tipple along the D&RGW line is also a live load operation. Operation on this railroad is brand new, and still undergoing refinements.
    Size: 18 X 43 Double Deck
    Scale: Sn3
    Era: 1950's
    Control system: Lenz DCC

      I think my favorite aspect of model railroading is structures. Especially interiors. I love that you can model a prototype building, invent your own and create groupings of buildings and stuff.

    The structure details are the best I have seen, and there are a lot of GREAT modelers doing amazing stuff. Guys, don't get wrapped up in the thumbs down stuff. Everyone on RUclips gets them and it is just a part of a trolls life to thumbs down videos. It still counts as viewer interaction which is a good thing. RUclips should really just do away with thumbs down stuff.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад

      Yup. What sort of cracks me up is the way the RUclips algorithm works when you click the thumbs down it doesn’t reflect on the video it reflects on the person giving the thumbs down. The algorithm says this person doesn’t like this kind of video and stops showing them to that person. So if a person likes train videos but gets all nasty and clicks thumbs down the algorithm will conclude that person doesn’t like train videos and stops showing train videos to them. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

    Boy that is some detail. Having been in some old building and seeing how he has replicated the construction technologies makes his work outstanding. All I can say is WOW.
    You have to wonder if he ever built a real to live in house if he would ever finish it... for all the little things he would want to detail just to get them just right.

    Hi Dale and Karyn, the detail was very impressive. S Scale seems to be relatively rare but when you see it the layouts are impressive the detail worth seeing. Thanks for the detailed video and the incredible close-ups. - Dean from Minnesota

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад

      Hi dean! Sn3 is really off the wall, expensive and in many ways the perfect scale for narrow gauge. HO is sort of the perfect scale for short line standard gauge. N is great for class A railroads. And while I’ve always felt On3 to be best for narrow gauge, Sn3 is just as good for detail and operation. Virtually the same. Yet structures are a third smaller. Key as O scale structures are huge. Curves are exactly the same as HO standard. So the track plan is more flexible. Only downside is few companies offering stuff. But the two or three offer many colorado prototypes. But at a price. 500 to 2000 for a locomotive. 50 to 100 for a car. Mostly the same as large scale!

    So his stamp mill from a mine, my guess is he modeled it loosely from the Kennicott copper mine in McCarthy, Alaska. The clue I look at is his cars that are Copper River and Yukon. The Kennicott Mine was serviced by the Copper River and Northwestern railroad which was a narrow gauge railroad purposely built to service the mine and bring the ore to market. The Copper River and Northeastern ran along the Copper River making its way to the mines. Google the Kennicott Mine in McCarthy, Alaska and you'll see all the red buildings built on the hill and the stamp mill. Again, just my guess. I will say that Doug and Tiffany do beautiful work!!!

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 года назад

      Hi. Yup I know that mine. But there were so many like that. So similar. I know the ARGO in colorado. Not the same but close. Same 10 stamp. But the 10 stamp was something to mind could just buy from a supply company. But most of these mills followed almost the same floor plan.

    Normally I don't like " S " scale .
    Some even call it the " Bastard scale " or " Orphan scale " .
    Too big for " Ho " , too small for " O ".
    But in this case the work is out standing with details . The wood work is beautiful .
    I just hope that the wiring is to building codes .
    Lucky Joe's is a nice place and the food's good the Sheriff and Deputy eat there on a daily routine .

      It’s an odd scale. But PBL made it popular. After releasing so much great equipment in SN3 scale The idea of trains almost the same size as all but able to glide through an 18 inch corner without any difficulty really caught peoples imagination.

      Hi
      Yes I know that recently in the past 10 to 15 years or more .
      That there's been a boom in the assortment of " S " scale but right now I'm having enough trouble getting thing started for both of my layouts Ho / Ho N3 and my outdoor 1:22.3 / 1:20.5 .

      I suppose the war bonds era would be 1941 to about 1970. So yes, not very specific. As kids in the 50’s we were really REQUIRED to buy bonds. One dime at a time. But by (buy?) about 1970 the huge drive was over even though they still sell them. .
