One year, when I was really little, Disney released Fantasia on VHS. Grandpa got that video, and he and I watched it together, and the Bald Mountain portion was my favorite part. That was when gramps had a stroke of inspiration, and so we began our dark work. I watched, and re-watched, and watched some more, feverishly sketching out how Chernobog looked, and grandpa, being a master at a sewing machine, he stitched, and he sewed, because I was too young to know definitively how to work the machine to my will, and that was the year I WAS Chernobog for Halloween. He took a pair of black sweatpants, and a black sweatshirt. These served as the base of the costume. We sewed on a pair of fake arms to the sweatshirt which held a plastic skull trick or treat bucket, and the actual sleeves of the shirt had the wings attached so I could mimic the epic moment when Chernobog opens his wings at the start.

this is a pretty good performance of this piece. we played it in our high school band in '88 or so, but we didn't have strings, so woodwinds had to pick up the slack (of which i was one). we went to competitions and stuff. thank you for uploading this.

Very enjoyable version. A very clear recording and upload. Deserves a thumbs up and more views. Upload using "snapshots" from Fantasia moved the story along effectively while not playing the video/Stokowski version. It fit well artistically. Thanks to a fellow Texan

If I'm not mistaken it was Rimsky Korsakov who did the original piece and this name you see up top is one of "The Five" who shortened his great work. "The Five" did works together and over the years and were well known in Russia. Korsakov was an an admiral for the Russian Navy for nearly 30 years and taught music at one of thier most prestigious schools in uniform. The original piece was close to two hours.

It is only recently I realised this is called "St John's night on a Bald Mountain" not because John spent the night there but because it celebrates that particular saints day in June! If it had been 30th November it would be called St Andrew's night on a bald mountain!

Cool. This popped up as a recomend when I was listening to the Jimmy Malone death theme from the last scene of The Untouchables featuring a soprano sax. It's the most melancholy lilting absolutely beautiful piece of orchestration I've ever heard in my life. Enio Morricone is a genius. Folks, google it and have a listen. Btw, yes. This piece I'm listening to right now is way cool and soooo Fantasia.

The stills from about 2:00 on are taken from Disney's Fantasia, and this version sounds identical to that version except for the absence of the church bell ringing repeatedly toward the end. Fantasia is definitely worth watching, btw. It's a timeless classic.
Disney did a "remixed" Fantasia but it wasn't anywhere near as good as the original and is now almost forgotten.
I think Disney tried to do another Fantasia after that, but it was abandoned and all that remains - that I know of - is a weepy little video based on The Little Match Seller (usually called the Little Match Girl). Last I knew, it was available somewhere here on YT, but get your tissue box out if you decide to watch it, 'cos you'll be either weeping or need to check your pulse to be sure you're still alive.
