People talking about shoujo always makes my day. I miss those times when all the romance anime were still coming out, nowadays we seem to be stuck on the manga-side of things. Shoujo is incredibly underrated in the anime community.
Yeah I've never seen a Shojo anime end properly ! Maid sama was one of the best Shojo ending of all time and they stopped the anime after like 14 episodes ???!!
most female mangakas nowadays makes mostly shounen manga, don't know why but that's it, most male authors LN mostly, makes romance based on their fetishes, which I highly dislike, they do the same thing with other genres but hey not that I'm blaming all male authors, I just think that Webnovels are to blame here while some Webnovels or Webcomics also carries the industry like Horimiya, there's this certain LN site in Japan where it's full of cliché webnovels but for some reason way more popular
I feel like a lot of people who are really into shoujo eventually crossed over into webtoons/manhwa, especially the whole villainess reincarnation fantasy genre, and into danmei, as the biggest romance heavy medium with a female audience that's currently gaining popularity imo - but that could just be me lol
You just explained my life trajectory. Recently, Thai BL dramas have been hitting. I used to be able to stomach harem and shounen romance but for the past few years, it feels like all comedic anime adaptations with romance just devolve into men being horny or something. And sure there are shows like Komi Can't Communicate but the rest just makes me feel like crying into a ball after binge-watching Clannad. Recently, I started to watch old anime like Kuragehime(Jellyfish Princess) and Ouran Highschool. BTW, after rewatching Ouran, I realized why I fell into the well of danmei. Like the twins were not playing. I did not remember it having so many 'sus' moments.
I wish Yona of the Dawn had gotten a 2nd season, it was just getting so good! But yes, shoujo anime is like a warm comfort blanket, and it's nice to see well-written and fleshed out female characters take center stage. Thank you for this video.
This!!!! Yona of the dawn manga is literally my favorite. The anime doesn’t even scratch the surface of the amazing character growth and overall story. Such a shame that it hasn’t gotten a second season considering that the manga is so successful.
Yes!!! Completely agree I already love the ova's that they released and love the manga but I would love to see more of it animated!!! I wish alot of these anime romances with flushed out characters especially strong female characters with great chemistry with others get the chance to be animated or get to be finished animated it's so sad and disappointing with the potential especially to expose newer viewers
i think spy x family (even though it’s considered as a shonen) has a lot of shojo elements and interesting romantic plots like the fake marriage situation with Loid and Yor and the love/hate relationship between Anya and Damian. I think this is practically a shojo with a lot of action 😭
ever since romance anime started focusing on male audience it's never been the same. like i just want more shoujo anime like kimi ni todoke or ao haru ride
hey, lets not blame it on us, i want more KnT as well! but you know what the problem really is, we either get melodrama, or harem. i would love to see risouteki boyfriend get an anime, same with hajiotsu and machida-kun no sekai, or last game. EDIT: I havent watched relife yet(so i cant talk about how well addapted it is), but the manga is great romance. with multiple couples, and a feel good run.
@@xrrgr hmm well...that's still on you. You CHOSE to basically watch a genre that catered to a single audience. Why are you so suprised you aren't getting what you're expecting? Might as well take a break from anime and wait, i know i am, 2 years now. That or support current shoujo authors(by buying their manga) and hope for the best. There's a reasom why shounen is going strong nowadays.
@@AoiFlame02 babes, the actual genre isn’t what’s most important it’s about writing quality. there are shounens that do romance well, but this specific type of badly written portrayal of romance is all people can find
LISTEN! I DON'T CARE IF IT'S PREDICTABLE! BRING BACK THOSE SHOUJO THAT MADE MY 13-year-old child heart SQUEAL! PLEASE! Just make it like that! Make me go on a nostalgia trip! I don't care if modern feminists say that Usui is problematic, STFU, Misaki is capable in protecting herself! Give me SECOND SEASON DAMMIT! Let me see them married! I want to see their children get animated!
It's great to see people talking about Maid-Sama after all this time. I haven't heard a whisper about it in years, so I'd assumed it had been more or less forgotten, which is a shame, because it was the third anime I ever watched and my favorite at the time. (For context, I'm a straight dude who got into anime in high school.)
Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn) is the greatest anime and manga I've ever seen or read. Not to mention, the soundtrack is simply beautiful. I wish it would get a reboot - it absolutely deserved more than 24 episodes. Lets hope we'll get more like this and Fruit Baskets soon!
Like literally more then half of the old shojo animes don't have season 2 after it is left incomplete. Example:- -o haru ride - maid sama -snow white with the red hair - Yuna of the dawn And many more. It makes me cry so much that how nowadays only shonan animes are given the importance or hype. And the shojo animes nowadays are wack and one thing common in all those is real perverts which honestly quite disgust me, i understand it's for fun but now it is shown too much and it makes me sick, like where are shojo animes which i could watch along my little cousins
For me, the peak of shojo anime is Nana without a doubt. It has all the mushy stuff the girlies love, while also having a plot filled with complex emotions and characters that feel like real people navigating their early adulthood and the struggles of life itself, something everybody can relate to. It's gut wrenching in the best way possible
I absolutely adored Komi Can't Communicate. It was closer to the older style of romances than most others that have popped up recently, humor, 4th wall breaks, sparkling bubbles and all. And the romance that pops up seems so natural and real, being able to watch it slow burn the way it has been has been so satisfying too.
Komi and Tadano were cute af but omg I couldn't pass the fanservice and the unhinge creepyness of all the other characters towards Komi. I guess that's the point, like nobody sees her as a real person except Tadano so their romance seems genuine, but when anybody else but them was on screen I just cringe so hard I had to stop watching lol.
@@Theanine95 Yeah... I have gotten pretty far in the manga and how the people act towards Komi hasn't really chabged.. and I have started to notice how the girls have droopy, melting eyes and simiral body structure.
@@Theanine95 Fair!!! Tbh the only side character I actually enjoy was Najimi. I thought they did the perverted comedic relief really well with him, because you never full know what BS he was going to pull
It's really hard to find good shoujo these days, especially josei. Getting older now and still enjoying to watch anime, I wish there was more series with adult main characters.
THIS!! josei is the unloved stepchild of genres and it makes me SO MAD! adult women are just as large of a consumer group for anime/manga as adult men but they get completely ignored. and it's certainly not for lack of artists who want to tell josei stories!
I watched yona of the dawn and is still waiting for the new chapters of the manga. The revelation of yona and his cousin and his illness etc. People learning that yona is the real descendant. I will thank FUSHIGI YUUGI for bringing yona of the dawn to me. If you liked yona of the dawn oh boy fushigi yuugi is much more deeper jesus the plot is godly its one of the classic shoujo animes. You should watch it. I got to yona of the dawn to fill what fushigi yuugi left me with
@@mayoneysketchup4869 its funny, my sister loved FY, but i could never get into it. i guess im not a fan of that type of romance that delve more into the melodrama. even though im a guy, i just like fluffy, feel good stories more.
2020 was dry af, but at least we are getting a few animes like "Raven of the Inner Palace", "Bibliophile Princess" and "I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss" this season, gives me hope for the future
The villainess story is just a standard isekai, though. There is absolutely no depth to that romance, it's basically a reverse harem with a main male lead. It's fun, but it's not exactly an example of balanced, unisex romance. It's a female fantasy with cardboard cutouts for male characters. Raven of the Inner Palace is actually amazing, though. Such an incredibly aesthetic show.
For a lot of shoujo animes, they are pretty often left unfinished since the studios can't/won't animate another season even though the story still continues farrr along, so it's best to just read the mangas because they give you the closure you need and provide more depth to the story, but also include scenes that were left out of the anime. Personally, Yona of The Dawn, Ouran High School Host Club, and Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama are my personal favorites, I just love how the story and characters develop and become more fleshed out
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one that will most likely get finished though, already has a full adaptation and the second one is in it's fourth season. Julian is easily one of the most well-developed characters in anime.
Maid Sama, Kimi Ni Todoke, and Say I Love You were all some of my first anime. I was completely unaware that it was not going to get better than that and ever since my soul feels so empty trying to find shows that even come close..💀💀 I have rewatched Maid Sama and Kimi Ni Todoke probably 5 times each trying to fill the void
@@nanami9816 maybe you can try watching lovely x complex, I loved that so much...... And also tonari no kaibutsukun(only 12 eps.... Try to continue reading the manga for the rest of the story😭)
The main thing that has been getting me through the shoujo drought has been villainess romance isekai. 😂😂 they’re so cheesy with just the right amount of romance and it’s scratches that itch 🥰❤️
@@mono8476 it literally isn't? bibliophile princess is so beautiful and although first episode is a bit slow, it picks up. we had an amazing adaptation of josei series "love of kill" in the beginning of this year yet no one talked about it. and there are more to come but no one will talk about it bc y'all just say "stick to the old shoujo, new will never be as good as old." and then complain how there isn't any shoujo where there clearly is and y'all don't even watch it.
I think the fact that romance animes deal with sexuality in a way that real, and not too embarrassed about it is one of its best attributes. There’s a way to deal with it that’s wholesome, without also being G rated.
Snow White with the Red Hair is so good!! I started watching it on a whim one day and I ended up watching all of it in under 24 hours. The world needs more fantasy slice of life romance anime!
@@Allyfyn If you really want to know, her "male gaze ruins anime" video was linked somewhere, and then youtube recommended this, and I have absolutely no idea what people find appealing in the shojo genre.
Special A was one of the first anime I have ever watched and I loved it so much. Then it was later on followed by Ouran Highschool, Maid-sama, and Ao Haru Ride and they still remain to be some of my favorite animes of all time.
Tbh, modern shoujo isn't "dead" its just they don't adapt the good ones like namaikizikari also known as cheeky brat, the story is so good the way the world is built, the way they just mature alongside each other and they have their own personalities and struggles it's not super uwu but will sure make everyone's heart flutter same with lovesick Ellie where the female mc is quite the typical "loser nerds" they usually portray guys to be but the development in both of them is just chef's kiss
Oh I love lovesick Ellie. That would be such a good manga to animate. I still go back to reread it at times. When I first started it was on a whim but I’m glad I did read it. I also liked kare no Kano. It was animated partly in the 90s but the quality fell off half way and most of the manga never got animated. It’s not only shoujo but has some mature storylines about mental health and trauma but mostly is lighthearted and fleshed out characters.
Couldn't agree more. As a connoisseur of love myself, I find the lack of sustenance and genuine love connections portrayed in modern day shojo to be droll and unengaging. Very well spoken m'lady.
you're lying, there's great shoujo even today, from TOTAL INTIMACY like A Sign of Affection to funny stories like Furare Girl or Our Precious Conversations
I think you're mistaking shojo for romance, shojo is a demography and romance is a genre. And like, this year we FINALLY got some shojo animated. And shojo and shonen handle romance very differently if you have read both types
OMG! Finally someone said it. I find myself rewatching the classics over and over again cause I can hardly find wholesome, heartwarming shoujo anime like before
Ouran Highschool Host Club got me deep into anime and I'm still hoping for a full remake of the manga. Come onnnn. If any studio decide decide to remake and the author agrees to it, it's going to instantly make the top headline in the anime community
YES PLEASE since the Fruit Basket reboot I can't not wait for a reboot of Ouran High School too, the manga is so cool it deserves to be animated completely!
Skip beat! was and still is my favorite shoujo till today. Even among shoujo fans, it’s underrated imo. Although the art style is of old-school and may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the story is amazingly good in itself with well written characters. It’s funny, sad and enjoyable. Thing is, the manga’s been ongoing till now since 2002, two whole decades :’)
You are literally me fr fr. No, like seriously, you just voiced out the things that have been going on through my head for a long time. I hate to say this but most shoujo manga coming out these days don't give the same feeling as the ones in the past. It doesn't give you that nostalgic feeling that makes you scream and punch your pillow, that makes your heart flutter, that makes you pull an all nighter. Shoujo classics introduced me to the world of animanga and I had a blast with them. The nights I spent reading them will be etched forever in my heart.
Early this year i finally finished my Quintessential Quintuplets mangá collection (yes i completed the collection without knowing shit about the plot), i loved it so much since chapter 1 that i was fangirling any interaction Uesugi had with Miko till the end. Even it being a shounen, but i know the feeling you are describing pretty well. Last time i felt this good was when i watched Lovely Complex a looong time ago.
There is still the occasional diamond that can be found in the garbage bag. I stumbled on Sasaki and Miyano a month ago and binged it in only a few days. Besides coming to terms with the gay/bi awakening being super relatable, it was also an excellent narrative justification for a slow burn.
Also when it come to merchandise if you think about it. Shounen titles gets milked to the core with figures and plushies like Demon Slayers and Jujutsu Kaisen by banpresto, bandai and other toy manufacturer brands/companies but we barely get these from Shoujo. I was looking for figures from Ouran, maid sama, ect and found like very VERY few from them and they're we're released back then to like subscription boxes/magazines so they're rarely hard to come by.
I didn't even realise I missed shoujo anime so much until this video! Could you maybe make a video with shoujo manga recommendations? Cause I've already read every one in this video except qq sweeper which I'm starting right now! Oh and you mentioning Dengeki Daisy ugh chef's kiss truly, thank you.
finally people with my same thought!! I'm sad that a lot of shoujos are judged or faded out over time, the mood of anime and manga of this genre is so peaceful and warms my heart, I wish they were created more like this, but now all the romance anime I see are very flashy and full of effects, it's a little weird.
So true romance is now just become kaguya sama horimiya spy x family and all. Surprisingly the shoujo animes of past maybe 2000s or 90s has become "cringy but likeable"- it's frustrating to hear it .
There might be a revival coming I think! Major studios have announced anime coming out next year: Sacrificial Princess and the King of the Beasts, How Realiana ended up in the Dukes Mansion, and I think The priestess is omnipotent is having a S2 released next year or 2024. The Villainess who tamed the Demon King is also out now, as well as bibliophile Princess , also Raven of the Inner Palace, so hopefully *fingers crossed* many more are to come (and less Harem PLEASE).
I’m so glad there’s people talking about this . As a shoujo lover I knew I wasent the only one noticing it’s been really dieing out these past few years . 😢
I personally always watched romance anime as it was it's own thing, never think munch about "Shoujo" and "Shounen" until now. My favorite romance anime/manga is Kaguya sama, but if a have to choose a actual "Shoujo" it would be Lovely complex. The thing about romance anime for me it's about the main couple having both a good chemistry and fun personalities, and if the story pull up another fun couples to the anime even better.
I will protest to my grave that kaguya sama has some of the worst romance out there. It is immensely frustrating and never actually got me to give a shit of they got together or not. Very funny series but not a romance in my eyes.
ToraDora makes me feel so damn nostalgic, like I'm back in high school watching it for the first time. Not to mention the climax was great. Those were amazing days for romance anime
Actually I think there’s a comeback since this year ! I’m a huge Shoujo fan and I think they’re doing decently ! I definitely wouldn’t say the death of it but rather the _decline_ of it.
I’m currently collecting A Sign of Affection; it just makes my heart so happy.☺️ I *strongly* recommend it to anyone wanting a great shojo series to read. Easily the best I’ve ever read. Another one I just started is Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet. Wonderfully wholesome with great art. Another one of my favorites- at least so far.
I'm not sure if this counts but "His and Her Circumstances" & "School Rumble" are my two go to's. I don't know if they fall into the Shonen romance categories, but they are wonderfully deep. In terms if old school shojo, "Brother, Dear Brother" ruined me (don't let the title fool you, it's not about incest).
ohhh this discussion fascinates me so much, after 2015 i kept looking for some shoujo to watch and there was none, i got recomended romance anime like koi to uso or some harem and isekai anime and i hated it, that wasn't real romance to me.
I'm still holding out for a reboot of the entire Kamisama Kiss anime that completes the manga.... the OG anime series and OVA were phenomenal with an adorable soundtrack, but I'd love to see it rebooted and completed. And yes... reading shoujo (and Shonen, and Seinen) manga got me through high school, college, mid-20's question-every-decision crisis, and... I'd still like some more shoujo anime.
Finally someone who understands the turmoil & frustration ..i have been dying and starving to see shoujo anime's from yearss like especially after 2k15 they literally disappeared T.T And i Completely agree the if electric daisy was adapted as Anime undoubtedly it would have been one of the best quality shoujo animes there ..but people literally preffer shitty stories nowadays..
Very happy to see Toradora and Your Lie in April clips highlighted. I listen to one of the ending songs of Toradors when I work out. Romance anime is actually one of the easiest genres for me to relate to because I have experienced romantic love in Japan. Your recommendation to focus on manga right now is spot on.
Nothing makes me sadder than scrolling through the romance section on Crunchyroll and it’s all just boring unlikeable guys in harems? And the girls are always reduced to just having boobs and no character? This is why I mainly read webcomics and manhwa when I want romance 🥲
I've easily read Strobe Edge more than 10 times and I'd willingly do it again if not for my over busy life. Btw, another recommendation I have is Koukou Debut, a story of a girl who needs a coach to learn how to date, and who told her from the very beginning: "Don't fall for me". And she fell for him. And I loved every piece of it. ToT
Shoujo anime was what introduced me to anime. Glass Mask is a classic shoujo, with intense drama. It got a remake in 2005 and I think you should watch that as it covers more of the manga (but there is an age-gap relationship). I'm also reading The World of Machida-kun. Highly recommend it as the main character is so sweet.
I'm so happy that you mentioned Fushigi Yugi it is one of my favorites of all time and the fact that Genbu Kaiden has and will most likely never get an anime adaptation make me so angry
The way this video is so concise, entertaining, well-edited AND it’s about Shoujo romance series?! Also THANK YOU for recommending my video. It made my heart skip like a Doki Doki scene in a 90s shoujo manga
What I am enjoying right now are the post-engagement romances, where a couple has already committed to living their lives together and now has to figure out how they're actually going to relate to each other and work together moving forward, such as Tonikawa, The Bibliophile Princess, and I'm the Villainess, so I'm Taming the Final Boss. That's a lot more interesting a story to me than another mid-tier "will they, won't they".
I starred watching Tonikawa during break times at work and the guys that only talk about shounen anime sat, watched it with me, then proceeded to watch it on their own. Made me so happy to see other people enjoying quality shoujo.
@@OldFantasy Yes, and without ever dealing with the real dynamics of a polyamorous relationship. That makes it deceitful. One of the things I like about I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss is that while she does have a harem of people who platonically love her and aren't just friends, they all understand that the Demon Lord is the only one who can be her true partner. As her father puts it, "No normal man can handle you", and the harem appeals to her fiance to take her concerns seriously when the two disagree. While the Demon Lord is at first surprised by the size of her harem and the depth of their feelings, he soon comes to call them her " puppies" and "loyal hounds". After all, a Queen Bee needs not only a mate but a horde of devoted workers to run the (literal) Empire they plan to take over.
@@CrabbyLioness true indeed it doesn't have to be a polagmy relationship tbh at least choose one or have a one appealing to you not some dense protagonist shit who bangs them all and everyone be like that my goat fr like??? Plus most of the reverse harems imo are more likable at least for me bec of the fact that it's more in the romantic side and at the end the FMC chooses one after the whole roller coaster and I haven't watched the villainess aming to the final boss yet I'm planning to
Romance in shounen we follow the guy's perspective not the girl that's why its not what it used to be.. they completely kicked women/ girls perspective because it doesn't bring money anymore ...
I would like to correct you, not trying to be rude. The original Fruits Basket came out in 2001 (the manga ended in 2006), and the remake was released in 2019 (it was announced in 2017).
I would love a video about shoujo anime. I love shoujo and I am sad their isn’t more anime like Kimi in todoke or kamisama hajimemashita. I’ve been wanting to get into reading manga so the recommendations helped a lot. Or even a video about shounen would be interesting too. I’m honestly surprised you don’t have more subscribers, your vids are such high quality and entertaining to watch!
Ahh! Thank you for making this video. I feel like a minority because I miss mid 2000s to early 2010s romance animes. I LOVED maid-sama, say I love you, my little monster and Nana, definitely nana. Shoujo mangas are still very popular so I'm not sure why they aren't being adapted into animes anymore!
Man, I miss some of the old shoujo romance animes and mangas. Kimi ni Todoke was one of the best. It's funny that I met one of my best friends arguing about why you should read romance manga in high school.
Romance: maid sama, lovely complex, boys over flowers, snow white with the red hair, sasaki & miyano **u may find romance in the below but it isnt a big part or the focus Baking: yumeiro patissiere Showbiz: skip beat Sports: chihayafuru Drama: fruits basket Horror: ghost hunt Politics: hanasakeru seishonen
The requiem of the rose king art style being pared down considerably in the anime was devastating. I was hoping for fruits basket level beauty. I'm hoping other adaptations get taken seriously just as fruits basket did.
The fact that full moon and kamikaze kaitou Jeanne's anime series don't have english releases is terribly sad. I'm waiting for sugar sugar rune too. I had to watch that one on youtube in 2014 then it disappeared again. Even the manga is out of print. I just reread kaitou Jeanne and it's still great.
So it's not just me. (Romance) anime really is different nowadays. I started getting more into webtoons for this "guity pleasure". Though I recently watched romance Killer on Netflix which was quite good!
Thank you for the video! You said the words I didn't know I was thinking (even though I actually LOVE Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun, not for the romance but because of the comedy). Two of my favorite shoujo/josei authors are Megumi Morino and Miku Morinaga. They wrote stuff that I would for sure recommend to anyone like: - Hananoi Kun to Koi no Yamai - Ohayou Ibarahime - Will you marry me again if you are reborn? - Kimi no Koe And there's a lot more that I absolutely love - Promise Cinderella - Kusuriya no hitorigoto (not that shoujo'ish tho) - Konyakusei - Honey so Sweet - And all those classic and cliché one shots that give me enough sugar for a life time
Omg Diabolik lovers caught me off guard 😭 and yes I do search romance or shoujo in manga in every years for holding anime if they had shoujo or romance 😮💨
Back im 2009, I was 12 and I used to love Romeo x Juliet -the roller coaster of emotions was so big (it was different from the real Romeo and Juliet except for the ending) at that time there used to be so many good shoujo anime - it had drama, adventure and romance (without being too cheese) - all characteristics that nowadays many anime don’t have and never really go that route. It ends up always being very cliché, everything looks the same and it’s very unimaginative 😅. They do have good premises though but they never seem to fulfill the pontential. I rarely find one that is interesting and fun and I find myself gravitating to others genres.
you took the words right out of my mouth😭😭 currently been binging the romance animes I used to watch years ago while i was in high school.. how are they all so fun to watch eventho i've watched them:,)
I totally agree! There are a lot of good/excellent shoujo manga that deserves an anime adaptation like Last Game, ReRe Hello, Dengeki Daisy, Honey Lemon Soda, Haru Matsu Bokura, and Namaikizakari. I also want a continuation of anime like Snow white with the red hair, Akatsuki no Yona. We need more shoujo anime and real ones!!
I completely agree as a fellow shoujo lover who has been watching for years and also resorted to manga and MANWHA - You gotta love that shounen ai. I was literally saying a year ago WHY IS THERE NO SHOUJO MANGA like there used to be. Dress up darling is good but it just doesn’t hit the same.
Honestly been loving Bibliophile Princess and Romantic Killer this season, both are so cute and remind of a lot of older romance series I used to watch.
Miracle girls, kodocha, kimi ni todoke, saint tail, Tokyo mew mew, card captor Sakura, shugo chara, ultra maniac, even Yamato nadeshiko shichi henge …GIVE ME BACK MY AMAZING MANGAS/ANIMES 😭😭😭
Wanted to give a shoutout to my favorite queer romance anime Given and Bloom Into You. Incredible stories and I hope to see more and more queer anime in the future
You're so right. I watched all the good shojo animes back at the time and there was nothing anymore as you said, i went to reading them and oh man is it a blessing
Hi! Btw if you want to read something new (apart from high school love story) shoujo you should definitely read 'The perfect world' manga. Here the lead finds out that her old school crush had been in a car accident and is now paralysed from waist down. It focuses on how they navigate their relationship through his disability and the societal gazes. Honestly, one of the best romantic mangas.
Omg yes!! I have the manga serie at home, I love it so much!! I really don't understand, why they don't make this manga into an Anime?!! Like bruh! It's such an amazing story !
@@anastasiyaholdak8493 Ohh yes! I am waiting for the same. Btw it was adapted into a movie but honestly, movie is a little disappointing once you've read the manga.
Man, makes me depressed that I can't show my girlfriend or well ex girlfriend since we broke up any of the shows you just mentioned. I loved those kinds of shows growing up not the new ones with too much of an emphasis on making a perfect character with no flaws and over exaggerated body proportions to seal the deal. Uniqueness and Charm is synonymous with Old school Shoujo, It was simple, It didn't follow the same trend or use the same formula as other romances, We got to see how the characters were like, how they reacted and they felt like real people with real thoughts and feelings and that's such a hard thing to do To bring genuineness in Media and for it to be appreciated by so many people to see a realistic connection between two characters build up into something that can be appreciated is impossible nowadays
I recently got into Skip Beat! (anime AND Manga) and have obsessively consuming it for weaks (the manga is running for over 10 Years) and its SO good! It has all the early 2000s jokes and evil laughter and romance and it's so deep as well. Also I'm still salty about Ouran. They should remake it or at least do a second season. Also can we have Magical Girl animes back? I would kill for Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and Fullmoon wo sagashite anime remakes that follow the manga more closely. Thank god for the Sailor Moon reboot!
Im happy you enjoyed Skip Beat! Im a fan of this anime/manga since 10 years ago. Every time i reread it, it became enjoyable to appreciate the storyline especially the romance 😊
I recently picked up the skip beat manga cuz yknow random feeling of nostalgia/where did all my shoujo animes go, so I wanted to continue it, and im like holy cow IT IS STILL ONGOING LOL
Fruits basket is so damn good , I love it and so many people have started to talk about more these days, so many clips r posted about it. It makes me so happy
Thank you for the video! it made me think more about what i like about shoujo anime. because im queer i wish there was more anime that depicted queer relationships without leaving aroace people left out. your outfit was super cute in this episode and i liked your background too! i find myself looking at the cute toys in the background when im distracted. Something i would like is to know what anime you took clips of. Some of the clips caught my attention and i wanted to know what they were but didnt see a list of referenced anime in the bio. Anyways I liked the video!
I'm an aspiring author and a lot of my story ideas, one in particular, are very much inspired by shoujo anime! I'm thinking of using the title: Boy Meets Witch... Very much a work in progress still but I agree with you so much! Edit: I usually prefer to make romance only a small part of the plot. For example, in Boy Meets Witch, the storyline is more so about the characters learning to love/accept themselves or even forgive themselves for past mistakes. The "love" for the most part, is unrequited.
@@praise2116 I appreciate the interest, thanks! I'm still working on my first book so it's a ways off but if you are a cat lover, you might like this first book I'm writing. ^_^
@@mono8476 No, but funnily enough, I was an animator before I decided to switch to writing and I was told my first "animated" series was a bit like Fruits Basket. I say "animated" because I didn't take any classes so it's very choppy and all I have up of it now is an old "AMV" I made for it. It was called Hero the Cat Cop. I based the two MC's off of Inuyahsa and Kagome with how they bickered though.
Really thank you for your content. I have big love of Shoujo anime and manga. The classical Shoujo i agree with you their stories and characters are absolutely pure and deep. Really miss them, so i sometimes write the story developments of the anime/ manga which has the opened ending like Lovely complex ( also draw ). And i think Shoujo is not just for girls, their genres are variety: action, comedy, fantasy..... Actually, Shoujo is always there, its just we just have to slowly figure out. I d' like to recommend others if you are interesting. Movies: Howl's moving castle, Ocean waves + The garden of words ( my favourites), Tamako market, Hotarubi no mori e. Anime: SA class, Mischievous kiss, Kobato ( really emotional + meaningful), Ranma 1/2, Hatsukoi limited, Nagi no asukara, Anohana, Nijiro days, Kono oto tomare ( traditional music) , Irozuku sekai no Ashita kara and Chuunibyou. PS: Sometimes its kind of hard to actually separate Josei and Shoujo, some of these may be not suit all guys opinions, just want everyone filling the void, enjoying the masterpieces. Hope yours answer! ♥️♥️♥️
The way I’ve read both without realising they’re written by the same person 🥲 strobe edge is better than ao haru ride imo.. ao haru ride is cute in the beginning but gets kinda toxic the more I read.. strobe edge is just full on wholesomeness with little to no drama iirc :’) too bad we never got an anime.. I recommend checking out the live action movie first and see if the story interests you, if it does then you can proceed to read the manga. That’s what I did at least. 😅
Okay so hear me out I am a Sucker for good romance and I ate up almost all the Shoujo animes and then when got to Shonen I gave up straight romance and since last 6 months or so I have been binge reading / watching boys love genre. At first I was like, why do I love watching two men falling in love in so much? (Just watch Sasaki to Miyano anime and you'll know what I mean) It just gives me more butterflies than a straight romance does...I'm squealing at 2 am and blushing like a teenager who has her first crush And now I do know why, I love watching equals falling in love, idk why but straight romance doesn't give that anymore. I have read so many at this point, honestly, it's gold mine 😌✨️✨️✨️✨️
Fruits Basket is my favourite anime ever. The story, the characters, especially everything felt so real!!! Yes its a romance, but it brings value to all sorts of relationships and touches sensitive topics, and I really respect and love that xx Also isn't natsume yuujinchou a shoujo too?? Why are so many deep & meaningful stories sidelined just because they're "shoujo"?? I know it's not for everyone, but I wish everyone could give them and the likes a chance >^< xx
I have a question have you seen the Wedtoon called marry my husband. I don’t think it’s the exact thing your looking for but it does fallow a women who got a second chance at life and I’m really enjoying.

People talking about shoujo always makes my day. I miss those times when all the romance anime were still coming out, nowadays we seem to be stuck on the manga-side of things. Shoujo is incredibly underrated in the anime community.
THANK YOUU.
@@koppii2 here here ! truer words have never been spoken
No lol it's just okay not underrated not overrated
I feel like a lot of people who are really into shoujo eventually crossed over into webtoons/manhwa, especially the whole villainess reincarnation fantasy genre, and into danmei, as the biggest romance heavy medium with a female audience that's currently gaining popularity imo - but that could just be me lol
no definitely!! and kdramas!!
Omgg samee

It's also me!
Exactly 😭💗 I was so annoyed when I discovered that there was only one season and I even bought the rest of the mangas to figure out what happens next.

Literally such a good story, and the manga is really great too it definitely deserved a second season at least
i think spy x family (even though it’s considered as a shonen) has a lot of shojo elements and interesting romantic plots like the fake marriage situation with Loid and Yor and the love/hate relationship between Anya and Damian. I think this is practically a shojo with a lot of action 😭

Nana is actually Josei not shoujo
@@yomamas1559 point taken, tho josei is pretty much shojo geared towards adults lol
Tadano acting like a slick shoujo male lead occasionally was also quite fun.
Lmao Komi romance natural and real what are you smoking?

2020 was dry af, but at least we are getting a few animes like "Raven of the Inner Palace", "Bibliophile Princess" and "I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss" this season, gives me hope for the future
So many this year. There are a lot more to come!
I'm waiting for My Happy Marriage and The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
Yeah bibliophile princess is pretty good so far
Still awaiting sacrificial princess and the king of beasts

The nights I spent reading them will be etched forever in my heart.

finally people with my same thought!! I'm sad that a lot of shoujos are judged or faded out over time, the mood of anime and manga of this genre is so peaceful and warms my heart, I wish they were created more like this, but now all the romance anime I see are very flashy and full of effects, it's a little weird.
You made me feel so nostalgic I cried, really really really want the golden shoujo era back, let's manifestt girlsss
Yeah it's coming back, you can see many title for fantasy series gets announced. For non fantasy, they usually become drama.
Yup that's how it was. Anime was already scarce as it was back then so any good anime/manga was just considered good regardless of what category
Heard Kaguya-sama is seinen... Lovely Complex is really good, I agree... They are flawed characters but relatable and also they are funny
School Rumble is definitely a series I try to watch every now and then especially if I need background noise
OMG I USE TO WATCH "HIS AND HER CIRCUMSTANCES" TOOO 😭🤘
School rumble was so fun to watch, it honestly made my day , although i watched it all in one day
Oniisama e mention!? Yeah, I agree, it's such a good anime and manga but it's very heartbreaking

ohhh this discussion fascinates me so much, after 2015 i kept looking for some shoujo to watch and there was none, i got recomended romance anime like koi to uso or some harem and isekai anime and i hated it, that wasn't real romance to me.

Tamahome and tasuki are mY BBYs
Omg I love genbu kaiden and wished it got a anime adaptation
@@artdesignsbyashley I know right!!
@@inakyu Takiko is one of my favorite mc of all time!
@@snowstrife2764 same I really like takiko I can't believe miaka called her weak
There are still animes that will make u cry you just need to look harder . Like watch the dangers in my heart it will caught u off guard for sure.
@@U1ozard tonikawa is a shounen anime wdym??
It's just the fact that most of the romcoms these days are just harems I'm just sick of it and the fact that it's more in a lewd manners like bruh
Romance killer is a new Netflix anime that breaks the 4th wall and absolutely has those old tropes
I guess I should check out some more shojo stuff. I really liked kimi ni todoke even though the slow-burn of it was kind of painful at times.
Romance: maid sama, lovely complex, boys over flowers, snow white with the red hair, sasaki & miyano
**u may find romance in the below but it isnt a big part or the focus
Baking: yumeiro patissiere
Showbiz: skip beat
Sports: chihayafuru
Drama: fruits basket
Horror: ghost hunt
Politics: hanasakeru seishonen
Omg you unlocked the memories of lovely complex!!! I loved that one!!
Yes please do talk more about shoujo! We need more shoujo content!
Nobody I've talked to seems to like the series, but personally, one that I've loved is Anonymous Noise. Think people should give it another chance.
They wrote stuff that I would for sure recommend to anyone like:
- Hananoi Kun to Koi no Yamai
- Ohayou Ibarahime
- Will you marry me again if you are reborn?
- Kimi no Koe
And there's a lot more that I absolutely love
- Promise Cinderella
- Kusuriya no hitorigoto (not that shoujo'ish tho)
- Konyakusei
- Honey so Sweet
- And all those classic and cliché one shots that give me enough sugar for a life time
I'm surprised that Clannad isn't really listed as Shojo, I guess because of its videogame beginnings?
THERE’S A NEW ANIME IT’S CALLED PRINCESS OF THE BIBLIOPHILE Y’ALL PLS WATCH IT 😭🙏 I PROMISE IT’S GOOD!!!
Okay 👌
Dengeki Daisy was my first shoujo manga. ❤️
@@anonview Same!!
Wat makes given queer? Isnt it just bi & gay?
@@mono8476 im using queer as a blanket term describing romance that just isnt straight
Hey I'm currently reading that one XD
"if we're lucky a kiss, and if we're super lucky a second season, but does the show finish? No."
man that hurts-
I'm surprised you didn't mention Gakuen Alice!! That was to me such an amazing story with romance involved.
I have not read this ages!!!!!
Fruits basket is so damn good , I love it and so many people have started to talk about more these days, so many clips r posted about it. It makes me so happy
Omg you mentioning Full Moon got me punching the air. It’s deadass underrated yet it’s my favorite manga 🥲
I GROSS SOBBED AT A PUBLIC LIBRARY READING IT
Thank you for the video! it made me think more about what i like about shoujo anime. because im queer i wish there was more anime that depicted queer relationships without leaving aroace people left out. your outfit was super cute in this episode and i liked your background too! i find myself looking at the cute toys in the background when im distracted.
Tell me, when you release it ^^
@@praise2116 I appreciate the interest, thanks! I'm still working on my first book so it's a ways off but if you are a cat lover, you might like this first book I'm writing. ^_^
Is one of your inspirations for boy meets witch fruits basket by any chance?
@@mono8476 No, but funnily enough, I was an animator before I decided to switch to writing and I was told my first "animated" series was a bit like Fruits Basket. I say "animated" because I didn't take any classes so it's very choppy and all I have up of it now is an old "AMV" I made for it. It was called Hero the Cat Cop. I based the two MC's off of Inuyahsa and Kagome with how they bickered though.
@@kmckinley0707 where do you plan to upload/publish it? I'd love to read it when it comes out!
fruits basket used to be my childhood show. I still watch it over and over again its so sweet 😭
I need more animes like kamisama kiss and maid sama😩
I'm a Shounen fan, but recenty I've watched Komi-San Can't Communicate and I loved it. So I wrote down all your recommendations! Thank you!
Fruits Basket is probably one of the best shoujo animes of the last decade.
Ao Haru Ride is my favorite manga ever so I'll definitely have to check out Strobe Edge
YESS ITS A MUST READ IF YOU LIKE AO HARU RIDE!!
Okay so hear me out
I am a Sucker for good romance and I ate up almost all the Shoujo animes and then when got to Shonen I gave up straight romance and since last 6 months or so I have been binge reading / watching boys love genre.
At first I was like, why do I love watching two men falling in love in so much? (Just watch Sasaki to Miyano anime and you'll know what I mean)
It just gives me more butterflies than a straight romance does...I'm squealing at 2 am and blushing like a teenager who has her first crush
And now I do know why, I love watching equals falling in love, idk why but straight romance doesn't give that anymore.
Same
It's a satisfying series, I read it just to get my dose of karma
