I think Crane's backstory references how in real life cranes care for their young for a very, long, time. Birds have to pull together every day to feed and take turns raising their young non-stop. Yeah like in Monkey’s backstory, his siblings were often very competitive and cruel to him by stealing his girlfriends or once trying to frame him for a robbery! Maybe this correlates in real life or how some monkey species are sometimes aggressive towards eachother. Idk I saw in a documentary once that bigger carnivorous monkey species would often prey upon and eat entire families of other monkeys. That may be a stretch but it’s kinda interesting to think about.
It's funny how all of them have a backstory similar to Po's. They were all outcasts and even Shifu didn't believe in them. Though it kinda does makes me think they should have been nicer to Po in the beginning. I mean I get it. They were training for YEARS to be the ultimate warrior only to have it be snatched away by a panda, but it kinda makes me think they still could have seen themselves in Po.

After Po's first day of training at the Jade palace in the 1st movie, the 5 go to sleep, and Po ends up accidentally stumbling into Crane's room, waking him up. There they have a short, though awkward conversation between the both of them, where Crane was quite nice to him. Even after he told Po that he didn't belong there, he immediately corrected himself to say that Po simply didn't belong in his room, because he just wanted to sleep, as soon as Po started self-deprecating. Yeah, the conversation was awkward, because Crane was woken up from his sleep, and they barely knew each other, but he was still super nice to Po, given the circumstances. Viper isn't seen holding a real conversation with Po until the acupuncture scene with Mantis, which happens much later. Where she's seen holding a diagram of Po's inner organs for Mantis (so he can see where exactly to stick the needles). That's the same scene, where Tigress rudely barges in, to tell us Tai-Lung's story, how he was raised by Shifu, and how Shifu had never loved anyone as much as he loved Tai-Lung ever since, (referring to how she never got the same love from her master). So yeah, Crane was actually the first one to be seen being nice to Po on screen, not Viper. And I'm sure of that, I've re-watched the first movie again yesterday, so don't argue with me about this. Pd: Also absolutely all of the 5 have lost one or both parents except for Viper, who still has both of them alive. We know Tigress is an orphan. In one episode of Kung-fu panda: legends of awesomeness (I think it was the last episode of the 1st season), it's centered around monkey and his brother, and there we're told he's also an orphan (lost both parents). Mantis doesn't have a dad, stated in the 2nd movie, where he himself says his mom ate his dad's head before he was born (smth real praying Mantis do irl, the female does eat the male's head). Maybe the reason why Crane still worked as a janitor was to pay for schooling. He may have been accepted into the academy, but I doubt remaining a student was free, much like college.

There's plenty of reasons to need a job, and to pay for school is just one of them, and it's the most reasonable one for Crane with the evidence we've been given.

I just realised something, Crane kind of reminds me of Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat Kung Fu Warriors who have cool hats that they can use as razor weapons, know techniques and attacks that utilise wind, are constantly looked down upon by their peers despite their confidence, attended martial arts academies where they befriended the best students there (Mei Ling at the Li Da academy for Crane, and Liu Kang at the Wu Shi academy for Kung Lao (I have no idea if in spelling the academy names right or not)), and had two masters (Shifu and Oogway for Crane, and Raiden and Bo' Rai Cho for Kung Lao)
