Avi wrote this song for his mother, who had been going through cancer treatments for some time (she's doing well now). The entire album was recorded while he was still in PTX, but wan't released until shortly after he announced he'd be leaving at the end of the tour they were on, which ended up being in September 2017. This song was a departure, with the string parts he wrote. You must be aware by now that Avi is hosting a premiere party on Friday at 12 noon your time, and he'll be playing all 11 songs on the album, plus taking questions. Then on Saturday is the livestream of the first US show in Nashville ($15 charge through Mandolin). And did you see he's added cities to the tour? Cambridge MA, Montreal and Toronto, for example. If you don't mind waiting a few months, you wouldn't have to go all the way to NY.

Field and Piers is another beautiful song. I believe Kevin plays the cello on the song. The video is stunning. Avi is the definition of "connected to the earth" and I want to visit every place his videos have been filmed.

Yes, Avi’s given name is Avriel Benjamin. Those are acorns, not pomegranates. Sequoia National Forest is only a few miles from his hometown, Visalia, California. And I think he’s wearing a moss blanket. Great job, Nick! And I can’t wait for Friday too! And don’t forget Avi’s live stream Friday at 11am CT.
I love that you're going down a complete Avi rabbit hole including his new album. This song is in my Avi top 5. I know you reacted to his lower version of Otherside here, but definitely watch the official video for it. It's beautiful & you talking about your family taking walks reminded me of it. Avi grew up in Visalia California. It is near Sequoia national park. The giant sequoia trees grow there. In the valley that Visalia is in valley oak trees grow hence the acorns on the album cover. A lot of the imagery on the cover are things that are native to Visalia, the foothills to the east of the city, and Sequoia national park further east into the mountains that house Sequoia national park.
This was part of his solo project while still with Pentatonix. The same time period as the Hey Ya! cover you reacted to. Avriel is his full name. Avi is the standard nickname for his name.

K.O. is a nickname that Kevin had before he started with Pentatonix. Kirstie just used her first name instead of adding the Maldonado. Avi is a standard nickname for Avriel.

Thank you for another great Avi reaction. Yes, it is a good week for Avi fans. I love the entire Sage and Stone EP. I saw in an interview that the way he wrote it was that he sang all of the instrumental parts, and all of the musicians played what he sang. Then they set that down to sheet music. That is amazing to me. Everyone else already said the other things I wanted to say. :)

I'm still disappointed that I couldn't see Avi when he was in the Netherlands. Because no matter what he sings with his unique voice, it always comes to me. I'm in contact with him now, but I know that if I have to talk to him, I don't know a single word of English anymore haha.

Yes Ariel Benjamin Kaplan, this was after leaving PTX, had group of friends join him for this album.
Hi Nikki - Actually the Sequoias was formed while he was still with Pentatonix. He did not continue it after he left but went off the musical grid for 3 years. If you listen to his E.P. trailer for "I'll Get By" on his RUclips channel he explains what he did and why.

I always figured Avriel & the Sequoias was how he could release music while still with Pentatonix. Sort of like Super fruit. Regardless, so obvious why he left Pentatonix.
That was the original idea I think.
It feels a bit mystical. Probably a nature/fantasy thing. I tend to find the solo songs more exciting, but it’s plasing to the ear and the Sequoias sound great.
