That is not so. Countries ruled by Emirs and Sultans have royal families, so the Grimaldi's are royal, and are in fact, the longest reigning royal family in Europe.
If you think about it, Monaco only became rich about 250 years ago, and had a history of surviving as a very poor place for like 2300 years before that. They also did Liechtenstein, Andorra, the Vatican and Fiume City State (a micronation in Croatia which lasted a year and a half)
It's an F1 hub for events held in May.
Referring to places and people in the area in French is not actually correct, since for the most of its history the area was part of the italian sphere of culture/language.
Went there in 2011. Stayed in Nice and visited for a day. Saw the Monte Carlo casino and thought I would have a look.
Parked outside were 2 Ferrari, 1 Porshe and some other cars I could never afford, so went to the slot machines opposite. The jackpot on the 1st machine was €2.5M.
I love your narrative style. Subscribed!
It was in April 2001 I had the opportunity to visit Monaco. The cost of parking our tour bus for two hours was $90.00. I recall seeing the crypt of Princess Grace, the palace and the casino.

The Monagasque seriously just annoyed their sovereign into granting them rights and that’s hilarious
Other people: *I have a RUclips channel*
Simon: *These are rookie numbers you gotta pump these up*
I'd love a Bottomless lakes of New Mexico episode!
As for Monaco, as resilient and fascinating as it is, covid is hitting it where and how it lives, hard.
Wonderful episode regardless!
lmao the rich aren't affected by covid just the lower and middle class
@@scooterdogg7580 Not at all. Sure, rich powerful people can get better treatments and get them earlier joe-schmo. But wealthy, powerful people are almost by definition HIGHLY socially active and travel widely. They have gotten sick and - like everyone else - died from COVID19. The more people cry "elite conspiracy theory situation" falsely, the less effective and listened to true whistle-blower and investigators are in getting at ACTUAL elite corruption. Like crying wolf.
@@scooterdogg7580 Alot of Monacos economy is about tourism, so obviously Covid has affected it. Also rich people's money dosen't grow on trees, of course it affects them.
I see no problem anytime a palace is turned into a hospital. It should happen more often.
Then you must not understand that human existence in any meaningful form requires balance. Palaces are important parts of overall human culture, just as are hospitals.
Ancient Monaco = Angry Chihuahua
That chihuahua looked so much like mine when I try to take a rawhide from her 😂
I like the accent you put on when describing Monaco-you sound like Robin Leach, or Alan Whicker.
Monaco has a princely family, not a royal family. Albert II would have to be a king for the Grimaldis to call themselves "royal."
That is not so. Countries ruled by Emirs and Sultans have royal families, so the Grimaldi's are royal, and are in fact, the longest reigning royal family in Europe.
3:00 Rumors say, that if you were friends to a count or barony, you can get around the tollbooth castle for free.
Please do Jerusalem (or just the old city if Jerusalem is too big a topic)
the Grimaldis are Serene Highnesses not Royal Highnesses. They are Sovereign Princes and they are noble but not royal.
So? They're functionally the same.
Oh, I love the pedentry of the heraldry
They still have more political power than the figureheads that are all the "royals" of Europe.
Humorous that despite it's small size, Monaco is still further divided into 10 administrative wards.
Surprised you didn’t mention the F1 Grand Prix in this?
I STILL can’t stand the commercials but you did make me smile a lot! Good show!
Ive been to Monaco and Monte Carlo. Its freakin amaziinnngg!! If you ever have the opportunity to go do it!!!🔥🥂🥂
Fascinating history that deserves to be remembered!
I'm changing my name and moving to Monaco. There's a tent city, right? Bring Your Own Tent?
Requests: Antarctica; Kabayan fire mummy tombs in the Philippines; Nagoro, a village populated by dolls in Japan.
Uhm there is already an Antarctica episode. Enjoy!
9:58 "I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away."
"There's something comforting about Monaco's ability to withstand the storms of history".... FOR THE RICH!
I imagine Monaco to be full of people who would unplug a child's life support machine just to charge their mobile phone.
Here some suggestions on Geographic regions and countries you should talk.
1 Andorra
2. Czech Republic
3. Lichtenstein
4. San Marino
5. St. Petersburg
I don’t think the fact that “the rich is always the one who survives” is surprising enough to be celebrated.
If you think about it, Monaco only became rich about 250 years ago, and had a history of surviving as a very poor place for like 2300 years before that. What Simon is saying is that even if they lost it all again, they seem to have the resilience to survive anything. That‘s what’s worth celebrating 🥳
Remember, no heroics into Saint Devote
I freaking love you.
That intro had me so excited to learn!
We were lucky enough to visit Monaco in late Feb.2020 just before COVID wrecked tourism..Glad we did!
Sainte Devote, now I know why they first corner of the F1 race is named that.
Slap on that "Sun-Cream", Baby!
If every country had a tax policy like Monaco, their economies would be better and no one would complain about people using it as a tax haven.
