Just checked: hingis 19 yrs old, dokic 16! Teenage sensation was there! A stunning performance (2nd set in particular) by a younger player. A rare scene of one-way traffic (loss) from hingis! A precious footage!
I’m not sure Dokic would have ever been a GS winner (unless she got very lucky). More talented players than her (Novotna, Sabatini, Mauresmo, Martinez) were stuck in the 1-2 Slam range after all. But she should have stuck around the top 20 longer than she did.
@@FlabbyTitmuss No I completely disagree. Jelena had more talent than some of those women you listed, she could’ve definitely won Slams if she wasn’t raised in such a toxic environment
@@danielduong3212Her father was a sucessful basketball player and maybe that played against her own development as a professional tennis player. The father role figure proved too much for her.
Hingis could sometimes just give her opponents too much time and height on the ball to unload. Dokic's flat and hard strokes were lethal when she had the sort of time Hingis gave her that day, especially on the lush first round grass of Wimbledon.
no question that Dokic was on the fire in this match. - taking the ball and hitting a lot of penetrating shots. at the same time, Martina really went into her shell and played very passively -frequently hitting very short in the rallies (she could turn things back in her favour against Davenport at this time, once the rally *extended). lots of of things were going on at this time, including Hingis’s decision to be away from her mother, for the first at any tournament of significance. a real shame for Dokic, in the long term, as she could have done so much more. She played an absolutely crushing schedule (26 /27 tournaments a year) 2000 - 2002, which i think wore her down, physically and mentally. this also never afforded her any time to develop parts of her game .... if she had played a more sensible schedule and had a /nurturing/ background, Dokic would surely have been top 5 /top 10 player for considerable length of time.
been wanting to see this for years do you know weeks before this jelena actually trained abit with Hingis and Hingis mum!! It was in Jelena’s autobiography
One of the most fearless debut performances of all time. Just wonderfully audacious play from Dokic. That said, this was Hingis at her lowest point mentally. Disgraced at RG, temporarily estranged from her mother and just looked like all the fire had fizzled out of her.
Dokic & Kournikova were the two teen sensations (along w/ Hingis, the Williams sisters & w/ Kim Clisters and Henin later on), who didn't reach their full potential
@@KH-sn2sj What kind of dumb argument? Everyone know she didn't win a singles title, but she achieved quite a lot for an injury-ridden career that ended as she had just left her teen years. Wimbledon SF, Aussie QF, YEC SF, made top 8 before becoming injured for a year, three Tier I finals including Miami, wins over the likes of Graf, Hingis, Capriati (x3), Davenport (x3), Seles, C Martinez (x3), Clijsters, Dementieva, Sanchez-Vicario, two doubles slams, year-end #1 in doubles. Not to mention an incredible all-court game. It's sad to think of how much could have been achieved without freak injuries and a constant, sexist media tirade.
@@ilovetati91 It's not really a dumb argument when number of singles titles is a great indication if someone was a great singles player lol! She just wasn't good enough. End of discussion.
That French Open Final in 1999 and her antics in that basically destroyed her promising career (at least her singles career). She may have won some minor tournaments after that, but she never had the same confidence after that - that is required to win the big four tournaments. It's a shame.
The back to back Graf-Dokic defeats, then the next year the OZ loss to Davenport, the RG loss to Pierce and the two OZ losses to Capriati. So an absolute thrashing, a loss to her pigeon and one match she was expected to win and another she was in the position to win. She was used to being #1, when that went her swagger and confidence on the Court went too and she became very passive.
51 comments here (52nd is mine). This match was an epic in many ways. Jelena became a superstar after this, almost got to the semis. Shame she lost to Stevenson, shouldn't lose that. Amazing talent, had potential to became a GS champion. Martina was so off here because of the RG final. She never won a GS after that, who would believe that. For a long time, Jelena was the lowest ranked player ever who beat number 1. Jie Zhang broke record in 2008 against Ana Ivanovic, but now record holds Shuai Zhang who beat Safina in Beijing 2009. She was something like 220, amazing.
