So glad you're enjoying them Tom. The trifecta are such a worthwhile listening experience jointly and seperate from one another. 3:15:35 that longer pause between Vader telling Luke to search his feelings for the truth adds so much weight to his realization. Hamill’s acting was so good there. His “Nooooo” was soul-crushing… 😢
I know that Harrison Ford deservedly gets the credit for the line 'I know' after Leia says 'I love you', and always loved his delivery of it, but I have to say that this version is almost better than the original. It contains a certain fear or desparation about what's to about happen to him that is very well done and feels very appropriate for the situation. Scene starts at 2:49:46
So much great personality from these throwaway characters. Even the extra interaction with General Rieekan fleshes him out much better than the brief, flat interaction we have in the movie.
There is just something about Empire Strikes back, that makes it so unique. Even after 40 years it still gets my emotions running. I remember watching it the first time ever in the movie theatre, I was as emotional then as I am now while listening to your edit of it. Well done.
Maybe the Whole Mendela effect thing derived from the radio drama, because in the radio drama Vader says, "No Luke, I am your father" and of course in movie he just says "No, I am your father" so maybe this is the cause 🤔🤫
Nah. I think the misquote happened here, as it does with most film quotes, because people remembering and delivering the quote after watching the film feel the need to provide context. We all knew that Vader told Luke he was his father. So folks retelling the scene added Luke’s name for context. That gets spread through the culture innocently enough and before you know it people start believing in alternate universes. Silly.
I actually do remember much the same information being published in the form of "the official Script of the Empire Strikes Back". In those days movies were either based on an award winning novel such as Peter Benchley's "Jaws" or vice versa. Movies like Star Wars published a novelization usually following the scripts and explaining quite descriptively where the movie relied on music and suggestions to make it's points (in other words: reducing special effects to prose). Much of this "unofficial canon" comes from those printed materials around the film's release time and was all we talked about. There was a Star Wars Fan Club magazine, too. There was no internet at the time.
I love how little throwaway lines in these radio dramas have turned into other things in universe. Like inquisitors being mentioned in the A New Hope drama which are obviously important in newer star wars media and health stims being mentioned in this one and making up an important part of Jedi: Fallen Order the video game
This radio drama sure was setting up the still fledgling Legends continuity alongside the Marvel 1977 comics (though the comics there are mostly semi-canon), the Classic Star Wars newspaper strip comics, and the Han Solo and Lando Calrissian Adventures novels.
I have the original radio drama on disc and I've been listening since i was 9... Didn't know these even existed until a friend of mine told me! I suppose this is what I'll be doing for the next little bit...
The thing I loved about this Radio Drama is that it starts out with a space battle. That was something that was sorely lacking from the film. The film was essentially a car chase in space as far as concerns The Empire and The Millennium Falcon. But the Radio Drama starts with a space battle. Another thing I loved about this was how Brian Daley wrote General Rieekan. The good general sounds like officers I served under when I was in the Army (note, I am not a combat vet), and Rieekan, as written in this resonates very well with me....a reason I have so much respect for the late, great Brian Daley.
I didn't think Luke was capable of being as snarky as he was in the Hoth shelter with Han LOL 🤣I blame the hypothermia, but I appreciate them trying to make light of a dark situation with sarcastic humor. I loved it 😄
I love Brock Peter's performance as Vader. He has one of the most iconic villain voices from my childhood: Capitan Bloth from Pirates of Dark water and Dark Kat from Swat kats.
I remember listen to this when I was very young here in Sweden. Then I didn't understand what they were saying but some voices and sound effects remained in my head until I watched the movie for the first time.
Just finished A New Hope, wow so well done. I wish the movies were this detailed in the story. Keeps me busy and entertained while in the Big Rig on the Highway. Thank you.
I listened to these new on Australia’s ABC. Shortly after Empire was re-released in cinemas and I recall how much more I enjoyed it with all the detail from the radio series to fill in the gaps.
I remember this from when I was a kid. I always thought we were picking up a drive in movie theater, and I would search the radio trying to tune it in again...Wow...
Good work, mate. I was 9 when the first film hit theaters. Back then it took a couple of months after its U.S. release for a movie to reach us. But the novelization, Starlog magazine articles and other promotional stuff were already at my disposal, allowing me to "watch" Star Wars as I imagined it in my head with mounting anticipation. I finally got to watch the real deal and it blew my hair back. So much so I stayed through the credit scroll, immersing in the music and starry backdrop until the houselights went up. A bunch of other kids had done the same. We quickly bonded and sneaked into into the theater for repeat viewings so often that the owner dubbed us the "Star Wars" gang, a title we happily adopted for ourselves. Had the local stations aired this radio series my ear would have been glued to the speaker, no question. Ah, the magic years. 😄
I have all 3 of original trilogy of this radio drama on cassette. So good to hear on digital without having to flip tape or change to another. Thank you! Brings back memories. Have not listened to this in a long time! Love it!
YT Channel Skyforge led me here due to the beginning few minutes. Thank you Nige L for keeping this for all to hear. You are legend.
What, you're not aware of the brilliance of Corvette Summer? Seriously though, Hamill did become a successful voice-over actor in the years after Star Wars.
I think the interaction at 13 minutes between artoo-detoo C-3PO and the other Droid is absolutely hilarious, it shows how the different levels of programming or maybe just the age of the Droid lends to its intelligence
@@YismirGoldFingers It's just amusing that you spelled it out phonetically instead of just using the abbreviated version using the letters and numbers like with C-3PO lol.
The impressive thing about this is that it reveals how much can be accomplished with editing. This is much, much longer with far more breadth to the script. But the movie is severely truncated by comparison and yet it works just as well.
Tell you what, watchin these really makes me buy Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo a lot more, the actor they got for him sounds far more like him than he does Harrison Ford Really like how intense Brock Peters is as Darth Vader, wasn't so sure when he first appeared in A New Hope but his voice has really grown on me

Indeed... Too bad you can hear him take a deep breath before his "noooooooo" 😅
@@shimyku7820 That's the thing though, this is natural, this is normal
I'm certainly enjoying this in the car on a long drive.
May the Force be with you
Always
I know that Harrison Ford deservedly gets the credit for the line 'I know' after Leia says 'I love you', and always loved his delivery of it, but I have to say that this version is almost better than the original. It contains a certain fear or desparation about what's to about happen to him that is very well done and feels very appropriate for the situation.
Scene starts at 2:49:46
That was an improvisation by Ford.On script it was written that he says i love you back.He didn't believe it held to character.
@@number27k51 I know - we all know. The point is that there exists another take of this that to me felt like a better one than they actually used.
The line was never “I love you, too.” He was supposed to say, “You remember that because I’ll be back.”
This was really cool, thanks so much for posting this! The voices of Vader, Han Solo, & PLO took a minute to get used to but it was cool.
"I joined up with the rebels because I notice things " lol. Very funny.
Great line......,
Deck Officer is the hero the rebels don't deserve...
@@alanhutchins5916 while it is quite funny han solo saying hey don't forget your heavy duty underwear kid is a tad bit funnyer
So much great personality from these throwaway characters. Even the extra interaction with General Rieekan fleshes him out much better than the brief, flat interaction we have in the movie.
infinitely better than the "I rebel" line from Rogue One
There is just something about Empire Strikes back, that makes it so unique. Even after 40 years it still gets my emotions running. I remember watching it the first time ever in the movie theatre, I was as emotional then as I am now while listening to your edit of it. Well done.
A new hope is the intro, empire strikes back is the romance, return of the jedi is the high action redemption
Listen to it every night while asleep. Thank you. Nigel
This was insane !! Thank you for
sharing
Maybe the Whole Mendela effect thing derived from the radio drama, because in the radio drama Vader says, "No Luke, I am your father" and of course in movie he just says "No, I am your father" so maybe this is the cause 🤔🤫
Oooooooo, tell Brian Stavely, The real news online.
"Beam me up Scotty!"
Good topic.....movies since have also parodied, Luke, I am your father....Tommy Boy for example....it's what most of us remember from ESB.
I didn't even get through the opening crawl and I subbed immediately
28:49 - The deck officer enquiring about C-3PO's well-being 😂 Wish that little scene was in the film 😆
"I don't need you to depress me, I'll depress myself" _mood_
I love how little throwaway lines in these radio dramas have turned into other things in universe. Like inquisitors being mentioned in the A New Hope drama which are obviously important in newer star wars media and health stims being mentioned in this one and making up an important part of Jedi: Fallen Order the video game
the continuity is very clever
This radio drama sure was setting up the still fledgling Legends continuity alongside the Marvel 1977 comics (though the comics there are mostly semi-canon), the Classic Star Wars newspaper strip comics, and the Han Solo and Lando Calrissian Adventures novels.
I could listen to this every single day its amazing
Just found these stories. I'm thoroughly enjoying this!
me too amazing
I didn't think Luke was capable of being as snarky as he was in the Hoth shelter with Han LOL 🤣I blame the hypothermia, but I appreciate them trying to make light of a dark situation with sarcastic humor. I loved it 😄
That was a great section! 😂
32:40
I always assumed Luke was unconscious throughout that whole ordeal.
I love Brock Peter's performance as Vader. He has one of the most iconic villain voices from my childhood: Capitan Bloth from Pirates of Dark water and Dark Kat from Swat kats.
Are you serious?? He was in Swat Kats?! 😻
Nothing beats James Earl Jones.😎
@@AXRISTEROS except David prowes and Brock peters
Bangin' name. "Brock Peters". Awesome.
Brock Peters is also Captain Benjamin Sisko's father in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine TV series. Awesome actor.
I LOVE this so much! It reminds me of listening to them as a kid in Chicago. Thank you for posting!
Thank you.
Originally the first movie was a lot more like the radio play but they changed it bc the pacing was off, great though ain’t they
I listened to these new on Australia’s ABC. Shortly after Empire was re-released in cinemas and I recall how much more I enjoyed it with all the detail from the radio series to fill in the gaps.
Just listening to this 15 minutes gave me more goosebumps than the whole sequel trilogy. Thanks KK
Indeed
So Brock Peters is one of those rare actors to be in both Star Trek and Star Wars franchises!
💰💰💰
love Perry King here! He was one of the originals who Actually Audition for the role famously played by Harrison Ford
Perry King played the role of the music teacher in the 1982 cult film, Class of 1984.
Thank you Nigel! You're a Star Wars loving gem for this. ❤️
I remember this from when I was a kid. I always thought we were picking up a drive in movie theater, and I would search the radio trying to tune it in again...Wow...
I remember hearing this on the radio when I was a kid it was broadcasted in several parts over time. Classic!!!
I love how you can hear Vader panic as Luke is about to jump.
He cares for his son!
“Look Luke, if you jump my boss is gonna taze me again, alright?”
😂😂😂😂
Wonderful..i have Empire and Star wars on tape but never recorded Jedi..i love to listen to this while remembering when i was a kid.
Just finished Nigel’s edit of a new hope I’m very pleased my only problem is... that there’s isn’t more of these lol
ROTJ buddy
There is the dark empire radio drama.
I remember listening to these Cassette tapes on a portable Cassette Player during power outages in big hurricanes.
I have all 3 of original trilogy of this radio drama on cassette. So good to hear on digital without having to flip tape or change to another. Thank you! Brings back memories. Have not listened to this in a long time! Love it!
YT Channel Skyforge led me here due to the beginning few minutes. He has done an animation about the ambush on the convoy that was getting supplies to the Rebels on Hoth
I remember about the dramas but never listened to them.
Incredible.
Thank you Nige L for keeping this for all to hear.
You are legend.
Glad we still have these great radio plays 😊
It's funny, I keep looking at my phone every few minutes to watch this thing.... 🔥
I bet Mark was very thankful for these dramas, keeping him employed in between episodes 4,5, and 6.
What, you're not aware of the brilliance of Corvette Summer? Seriously though, Hamill did become a successful voice-over actor in the years after Star Wars.
@@asurlybarber3620 As well as The Big Red One (aka Ground Wars)
Would imagine Hammill did just fine financially from Empire and Jedi. But he’s a born actor and loved the Star Wars world. Big fan
Had all 3 of them on cassette in the early 90s and then on CD fantastic
I had all these on tape back in the day. Nice to find them again. Such a great series
1:35:34 I love that delivery of that line!
As it was meant to be!!!!... Now go and get me the next rememberable timestamp!!!!!
I think the interaction at 13 minutes between artoo-detoo C-3PO and the other Droid is absolutely hilarious, it shows how the different levels of programming or maybe just the age of the Droid lends to its intelligence
R2-D2?
@@DizGuys yeah the little can that beep boops around
@@YismirGoldFingers It's just amusing that you spelled it out phonetically instead of just using the abbreviated version using the letters and numbers like with C-3PO lol.
@@hartianx1698 yeah I've seen it written like that in the comics
A blind friend introduced me to audiobooks many years ago. Now, i’d much rather use the “cinema of my imagination” than stupidly stare at a screen!
I had this on cassette! It's really good. So is the Star Wars drama. These brought back the movies beautifully and added more details.
“For every insult you will scream a dozen times.” 😳
Vader seems much more villainous in this than in the movies.
The first part or scene of the battle of commander Nerra and the convoy is the best edit by your edit.
Been thinking about how cool that would have been as an opening scene for the movie.
Known about these for over thirty years. Love them as much as the original three films. Better than any sequel rubbish.
I didn’t even know this existed!
@Cory Gill lol reminds me of:
Luke Skywalker: do you know a obi wan kenobi
Ben Kenobi: of course i know him, he's me!
i didnt believe it did either ,but it does.
May the force be with you Nigel I love these videos
Cheers. May The Force Be With You Too.
I remember listening to these on our public radio station. Thanks for sharing.
The list of additions / edits I incorporated to create Nigel's Edit are now part of the information write up about this video.
Thanks so much for putting in all the work and making this available. I'm loving the experience.
Awesome work sir really good stuff
@@jamesfield1674 Thanks. I'm glad others are enjoying these as much as I do.
i love this:)))
Why are there 2 uploads of Empire? They seem to be mildly off in run-time too?
The impressive thing about this is that it reveals how much can be accomplished with editing. This is much, much longer with far more breadth to the script. But the movie is severely truncated by comparison and yet it works just as well.
Tell you what, watchin these really makes me buy Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo a lot more, the actor they got for him sounds far more like him than he does Harrison Ford
Really like how intense Brock Peters is as Darth Vader, wasn't so sure when he first appeared in A New Hope but his voice has really grown on me
This is so phenomenally awesome! Best acting and scene direction!
His appearance was short, but that medical droid's voice is so soothing... I love it :o
Right?
I'd go gay for that droid's voice
I thought that dialogue was a particularly sweet addition to the story.
21b? T1b?
I sure am unnerved of that droid type's appearance on the films and some video games though. It looks so... skeletal.
“I joined the alliance, cause I noticed things” gold 😂😂😂
The amount of times I have listened to these over watching any of the new dumbass movies just warms my heart. I will never get sick of these radio dramas.
These are AMAZING!!! I’ve been a Star Wars fan as long as I can remember and I never knew these even existed. Thank you for posting these, can’t wait to listen to Return of the Jedi
