I like that he's canonically bad at clue and among us. It's refreshing to see a brilliant detective be bad at things rather than the typical sherlock who is amazing at everything. It makes him feel more like a real person than someone the filmmakers write in.

I feel the reason Knives Out (and seemingly Glass Onion too) hit different to the new Poirot movies is that not only are they completely original, but they are also very modern. Both in the time they are set in and the style. Lots of snappy dialogue, lots of jokes but still managing to keep the tension. Rian Johnson doesn't just bring back the murder mystery, he modernises it while staying true to its escence.

Poirot have that amazing series with David Suchet that is incredible and one of the best detective series and adaptations of a book of all time. The Beatles have a song called glass onion wrote by John Lennon. He put a bunch of lines from older songs in it to mess with the fans, who were always trying to figure out the meaning of the songs. Ironic because Ryan seemed to think he was on to something profound in this movie. The message and the themes were so heavy handed it kneecapped the story. Instead of characters we’re given 2 dimensional cutouts (billionaire tech mogul, misogynistic podcaster, ditsy fashion designer) no more deep than “Colonel Mustard.” None of these references to modern culture elevated the genre. And Craig’s southern accent is distractingly unnatural. I enjoyed the first Knives Out but I don’t understand the praise being heaped on this movie. No one I watched this with enjoyed it either. Makes me feel like I’m living in an alternate reality

    • @kylebookout1789
      @kylebookout1789 Год назад +4

@@jabrokneetoeknee6448 I understand those criticisms. There's definitely a certain level of fantasy to it all. The whole thing requires a lot of willful suspension of disbelief to work. It's not meant to be realistic but entertaining clever fun. The clear and sometimes very obvious points of reference or allusions to real world stereotypes or people is just icing on the cake. I see it as likely intentional that everyone is so simple and outwardly unlikeable. Benoit Blanc pretty much said so. It seems deep and layered but it's not. That seems to be an inherent flaw in a lot of meta narratives. Is commenting on the trope or outright subverting it as good as actually doing something new? It is even possible to make something completely original? I wish the movie worked more for you. I don't think your living in an alternate reality you just didn't like it. Which is totally fine. Great even. It makes discussions about the film better!

I love mysteries and who-dun-its. The first movie was terrific. Such a breath of fresh air. I think the reason I loved it so much is because it had a giant cast of big name actors...and it actually worked! It feels like many times when there's such a large list of prominent actors there are some that are forgotten about because there's only so much screen time to go around and finding balance is hard. There are plenty of times when it works in animated movies where they're voice overs, but live action is more difficult. 'Knives Out' absolutely blew it out of the water with how everyone was. Every character was essential and played their part. It was one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen in the last few years. I'm thrilled that 'Glass Onion' seems to go the same route because I already know I'm going to love it. A great ensemble, great setting, and great/clever story telling is always a winning combination in my book. Sadly I'll have to wait to see it on Netflix because the next few weeks that it'll be at my theater happens to be extremely busy for me, but I hope it makes a ton of money at the box office. I did not like what Rian Johnson did with Star Wars -- at all -- but I also think if he was able to do the entire trilogy from start to finish then it would have been better too.

After The Last Jedi it proves that Johnson needs to stay away from Star Wars. When it comes to original films and Knives Out he can do good though. I enjoyed this murder mystery which is as entertaining as the first. If we get another film in 2-3 years I hope they can maintain the high quality of the first two (I'm happy for Craig to play Blanc as long as the scripts, characters and setting don't become predictable and cliché).

I think Rian does alot better with his own ideas and actors he chooses. Trying to insert his quirks into Star Wars was just not a great fit. I think it would have been more cohesive if he did the whole sequel trilogy but for myself the tone of TLJ just felt wrong.

After The Last Jedi, I felt angry at Rian Johnson for ruining Star Wars - I was really infuriated with how bad of a Star Wars film it was and how much damage it did. But after that, after I've seen his other films, I can say that yes, he's a good director and I really enjoy his other films. Knives Out and Glass Onion are great! They are original, stylistic, fun, well produced and enjoyable films - he just has to stay away from Star Wars, period.

You must have a very different definition of immaculate than everyone else if you thought the writing in that movie was immaculate…
Like, forget about all the Star Wars stuff- the lore and all that- and just focus on what the middle part of a trilogy should accomplish and how it should function in the overarching story. The middle, at the very least, should set up the final part. It should expand on what was setup in the first part and then introduce the big conflict that propels the audience into the final act. With The Last Jedi, however, Rian Johnson made the bizarre decision to literally _and_ figuratively throw away 98% of what was set up by The Force Awakens while not introducing any new conflicts and then pretty much ends the movie as if it was the end of the trilogy. It’s one of the greatest examples of bad writing.

I’m in the minority here, but I really didn’t like this film. I felt that it went way too long and the payoff felt really cheap. Spoilers:
When it is revealed that she is the twin sister, I felt that the rehashing of previously seen scenes was really boring. Chris says that it would be better on rewatch, but I argue it would be worse. If you watch the film knowing she is a twin, then the extremely long rehash would get really boring really quick. Again, I know I’m in the minority but I really didn’t like it.
Other critiques: when the killer was revealed, I thought there was going to be another twist because I felt it was so obvious throughout the film. Also, I found that destroying the Mona Lisa as the big payoff was really predictable, but also it was kinda dumd to “stick it” to the rich man by destroying the most famous painting ever. (Also, France would never publicly admit that the Mona Lisa was destroyed, so I don’t even know if the payoff worked)

Also, having the other characters change their mind about testifying against Edward Norton just by smashing things felt very contrived, and doesn't change the fact that they still don't have any material evidence against him. As revenge it's crap, because he can just buy replacements for everything except the Mona Lisa, which destroying it is also just a crime against art in general, and not "the rich".
Also, the whole "business plan on a napkin thing" is such a nonsense literal regurgitation of a cliche. You can't outline a business on a napkin. That's never happened. It's just a hack silicon valley myth.

What bothered me about Glass Onion was how it was kind of difficult to relate to the environment and characters because of their money and how...weird the setting is. I love the cast, I love the premise. But it was way more predictable than Knives Out, and that prevented me from enjoying it. It's like they leaned so heavily into being extravagant and cheesy that they lost the vibe of Knives Out.

"Glass Onion" and "Top Gun: Maverick" redefined what sequels are supposed to be and both films nailed it this year. Hopefully, "The Way of Water" shines in December.

I found it predictable. Love the way it's told, but it felt like it was doing what sequels do…go over the top. The first Knives Out was simple and amazing, this one is over the top. Bigger. Was not needed. This has good moment, but def predictable where it would end. Disappointing!

What I like most about this movie is it finally made Benoit an even more fleshed out character than he was in Knives Out, in which he felt more like a supporting man to Ana De Armas' character. This time he served the leading man role much more prominently and he had a more active role to play in the case. We got a taste of his personal life and even some moments of vulnerability for his character. In some moments even especially in the first act, he also played this sort of a blank slate role whom we as the audience can put out ourselves in his shoes as he learn about Bron and his island as a complete stranger, and that experience made me relate to his character further. They're banking on him to be the franchise maker of this whole series so the spotlight is given to him more rightfully so

It was a fun movie. Just not a mystery. They show their hand with the casting…. Just like the first knives out. Just like the first Wonder Woman. These casting directors who cast the second biggest name in the film to be the “surprise” villain are failing at their job

I honestly didn't enjoy this as much as Knives Out. The mid-way 'reveal' definitely took me by surprise, in a good way, but there wasn't really anything clever about the 'whodunnit' and 'why' in the final act - especially when compared with the first. You can tell Johnson spent years honing the first film and just a few months to complete the second.

The Knives Out movies are solvable, even if you don't initially understand why. The Hercule Poirot movies aren't - they're guessable, but the clues just aren't there - sure, you pointed out a seemingly insignificant line about a missing paint tube, but there's no way anyone watching would know that paint color dries the exact color of blood, or whatever. Especially on a second watch, Every. Clue. Is. There. Bravo, Rian Johnson! This is the stuff that gets my writer's blood boiling!

Knives out 1 - great movie with good story and awesome characters, great twist and turns and a stronger or smarter culprit.
Knives out Glass Onion - Good character development of Detective Benoit Blanc with bad story and a weak culprit.
I think the first part is better and i will watch it again someday.
(Please suggest some good crime mystery movies)

I work at Alamo Drafthouse, and What's weird about the theater launch is that they're heavily regulating how we show it. We can only show it in our Micro theaters.
Which means they're all already sold out cuz they only seat up to 30-40 people. And won't let us have an employee screening like every other movie.
But I'm glad it's coming to theaters regardless
