    I love the honest experience shown in this video! I often feel shame when I don’t feel 100% better after trying a mental health day. This video showed me that it’s normal, and its okay to not fix everything in just one day! I even made the connection that sometimes the mental health days and following the cues I’m giving creates SPACE for a meltdown which often releases a lot of emotion that I didn’t realize I was shoving down. This video is so valuable, thank you for your vulnerability Hayley.

      yeah, it's like you actively tap into your emotions. It is healthy in a long run but could be overwhelming in the moment, especially if you've been bottling it up for some time

    Thank you so much for including the honesty about your meltdown. It helps me feel less alone and reinforces the idea that progress is not linear. The meltdown does not negate the care you took for yourself for the rest of the day!

    • @frohnatur9806
      @frohnatur9806 9 месяцев назад +1

      It kinda does negate that day. Wasn't the point of doing this that she feels better and can get stuff done? Having a meltdown sounds as bad if not worse than her previous mental state. When you eat a huge meal and are still hungry and craving afterwards, eating that food was useless, since it didn't achieve any of the typical goals.
      I'm grateful for her honesty too though. The meltdown might have happened because Hayley stressed too much about doind her day right, making all these activities feel like a chore and leaving her exhausted. It might also have happened due to some unknown reasons.
      To me, this video is valuable because it shows that things won't always work out, so try to be prepared for that

    • @rowan7588
      @rowan7588 9 месяцев назад

      @@frohnatur9806 I don't know if you've had an adhd/autism related meltdown before but I will tell you that I think it was the time taken to start working through the emotions, and all the activity and vulnerability that occurred throughout the day that actually allowed for her brain/body to feel safe enough to have that meltdown. Typically when you are audhd meltdowns get suppressed and turn into shutdowns that are really unhealthy for you and put a lot of stress on your body/mind. While meltdowns tend to feel awful, they also are a way that your brain uses to flush the system out. They are exhausting and can be distressing, but are necessary to a brain with adhd/autism that has been overloaded. Her body still gained the benefits from being out and active and showering and all that good stuff, and her mind still got to have a great therapy session and journaling/outdoor time to just be present. None of that goes away because of the meltdown. And productivity is not the goal of taking time for your mental health, its a reward to spend that time focused on yourself.

  • @coor0kun
    @coor0kun 9 месяцев назад +44

    Honestly, doing ALL of that in one day would've given me a meltdown 😅 but sometimes you don't know what you need until it happens. The important thing is you're trying to listen to your needs and meet them where you can.

    • @Plethorality
      @Plethorality 9 месяцев назад +4

      It would have overloaded me, so much... But she is young, too. I had more capacity for big days, back then. 58, now. Calmer, but i pace myself a lot. Also chronic fatigue puts a dampener on that much activity.

    Something that really stuck out to me was the part where you said that a mental glow up day shouldn’t be an isolation day. I’m an introvert so being around people for even 1 hour in those times really takes a lot out of me, but at the same time it kind of heals me? Like, it just makes me feel seen in those moments even though it takes a lot outta me. So, I tend to stay inside my room quite a lot when I’m having rest days for my mental health and just ignore some signs of my mind wanting to be productive. So, I want to work a bit on that. And the part that just taking a day for yourself will fix everything is definitely not true. Seeing this video just further helped me understand that healing is not a straight path, it’s curvy and sometimes might take you back to the starting point. But, having the same patience, compassion and courage for yourself will make it easier to start again. I find that really beautiful. Thanks Hayley for such an amazing video!!

  • @Dancinglemon
    @Dancinglemon 9 месяцев назад +19

    This reminds me of when I first got diagnosed, I didn’t realise it at the time but the whole reason I suddenly started having meltdowns was because I felt I had ‘permission’ to have them. They were horrible and overwhelming but it was like (sorry for the gross imagery) finally puking after having awful nausea for 20 years. I had a lot of build up to let out, yknow? I always felt better a day or so after. Now I’m a lot better with regulating before getting to that point of a meltdown but sometimes I think it acts as a way of unclogging a really blocked something, so it makes sense for one to happen after allowing yourself to really stop and feel for a day.

      Yesss! I experience this too but I think it’s a mixture of adhd and pmdd 🙈 what I do for myself: I always know when my period comes and I know on which day I’m feeling off and miserable (usually 3 days prior and the first two days, so 5 in total). I try to cook nice meals and prep as much good food as I can before. Bc I know I either eat nothing or all the fast foods I can get on those days. So I prepare something sweet too (like protein brownies/banana bread etc) to make sure I don’t eat 2 chocolate bars in an hour 🙈 also I try to work more the week before to make sure I need to work less then. Or I’ll push work in the next week bc after your period most often is the time to rise up like a phoenix and be super motivated. Same thing with chores. Wash your laundry, do the dishes, clean the apartment etc
      To sum up the goal is to make your life easier within those days.

    I think a therapy after a period without therapy could be pretty overwhelming on it's own, even though it's usually really helpful. Just because it is kinda timed dive into pretty deep things. And also by the things you're saying after your therapy I would say it was an intense one. I know for myself that I get easily overwhelmed with that and usually plan only things like playing a game or something like that. I think being with people after that even for an extravert could be taxing since in social situation you still use specific processing that is harder for neurodivergent brain. Well, also we could have a meltdown because food was a bit too cold sometimes lol, so who knows.

    I love your honesty. Having a meltdown at the end of that day also shows another truth: having a meltdown doesn't negate all the good things you did for yourself! You took care of yourself, and even if that stellar mental health day didn't flip a switch and make the rest of the evening or week go well, those things, as you were doing them, were still 100% beneficial and helpful and good.

      @@hayley.honeyman ooooh, that's a really good point!! a therapist once told me that mental health is like a garden -- it takes work to make it beautiful and it needs regular maintenance if i want to keep it that way. scheduling these mental glowup days would then mean taking a whole day to work on that garden and weed, fertilize and plant stuff, which i could do whenever, even when in a good headspace. i really love this metaphor because it's also very forgiving -- sometimes i don't tend to my garden and some flowers might die or weeds may take over, but i can always start working on it again. so i guess i will start planning for these mental gardening days now and not wait for my mood and energy levels to drop. thanks again, Hayley, for pointing this out! ☀️

    I love all your videos, Hayley! I'm probably neurodivergent/ADHD and I stay super f*cking busy with college and a part time job so I literally can't take entire days like this off but it's motivating to at least do little things for myself throughout the day, especially when I'm feeling down and still have so many responsibilities. Even discovering what works for me (journaling or taking walks) and prioritizing that time is better than nothing, as well as seeing my physical, mental, and emotional needs as valid and important enough to take seriously.

    i'm late, but it's really awesome that you decided to include mentioning the meltdown. it's nice to see that sometimes meltdowns/breakdowns just happen even if you do take care of yourself. i've always blamed myself for having breakdowns, thinking that i just didn't take care of myself well enough, so it's nice to see that it just happens sometimes.

    The outro made me tear up. I know the frustration of doing everything I can to tend to my mental health and then getting a melt-down anyway. You took a little bit of the sadness about this off me. I feel less alone now. Also I feel sad, that you are going through a tough time. You deserve all the support and good things you can get, Hayley!
    I think my meltdowns come, when I am putting too much pressure on myself to do things, even fun things with friends. I need time every day to zone out and calm down. Realizing and communicating this has helped me, to reduce the number of melt-downs. I can't just step out of my comfort zone too far and expect my body/mind to be fine with it. I need to prepare and be careful and slow with either new things and socialising to stay balanced.
