Great video, guys. You hit a lot of good points. I remember when you took off. I'm two years older now, which means I'm way way beyond sailing the world, rather than way beyond sailing the world. But that's OK, I could write a book about my life's crazy adventures. I'm delighted watching your family's adventures and your kids grow up and experience the world. Fair winds.
What a fantastic episode. Been watching for a little bit but first comment is now. Thank you for this advice. We are just shy of 3 months from leaving full time. I love how you said it’s easy to have boat envy. We are in a wooden 40 foot monohull because that’s what we could afford. It’s better we do our travels in this boat instead of waiting till we can afford a bigger more beautiful one, because we are old enough to know we won’t ever think we have enough and we won’t ever go. I also love “finding your true north” we have a 13 year old we are pulling out of her second year of high school. She’s devastated and doesn’t want to go, our focus is family and having this precious time together before she grows up (she’s our last). This is so important to us as parents and we will need to stay focused on that and remember that on tough days. Thank you from Hervey Bay Qld.
You do a great job on so many fronts….trust me when I say your channel will continue to grow, your content is easy to watch. Cheers and happy holidays. 🍻🤗
Great video, As an old salty with 40+ years of sailing experience and well over 40000nm (stopped counting there) under the keel I so recognize all you’re saying. We normally gave the weather a quick look, not like we see now with total route planning. Maybe we'll go that way, but so far. I keep to the thought that previous weather is known, and that determines the sea-state, furthermore you can see the weather that you will have for the next few hours. Anything beyond is still guessing. Sure, I did some weather courses etc. but nothing is certain. Planning for 5 days a head a bit of a lie to self. Just avoid the big hurricane fronts, and we do not sail out at bft5 or above. To give you an idea of our approach. There has been a few developments since I learned sailing in northern Europe as a young boy, computers did not exist. Ais? Radar? The industry has actually woken up the last twenty years. And now AI is entering our space. So it is finally getting easier for people to jump in and get the experience, because that’s what it is about. And then in my book it’s about the wind in your hair, the beauty of nature, the companionship with friends and family. I used to escape to the boat to sail to get some quiet and read a book, but nowadays we have wifi and mobiles everywhere. Learning to sail is not so complex, learning to understand all mechanics behind it a different story. But with some common sense and a decent boat I agree that most people can do it. Boat life does give you higher highs and lower lows, that’s true. But over time even that flattens out. I can say after living on board for ca 15 years. Bad experiences stick and give you the experience that the next time you act just better, instruct others with more confidence etc. Miles do count. Success in Singapore lah, My previous home country (Home is where the boat is). If you are still there during Newyear. The fireworks are free to watch in one location around the bay. Its a big government controlled show. A great place to see them is "gardens by the bay" just bring your food or go on top of marina bay sands. Have fun.
What a great episode I love these little talks like this. My goodness the years have been ticking by haven't they but I always knew you would succeed in sailing
You wait until you have done 200,000 miles...and you have re-learned stuff and made the same mistakes over and over.....maybe I am not very bright.....I have got better at recovering from my mistakes.
