As they were married in real life, one can't help but wonder what that was like. They are both good actors, so probably their marriage was quite unlike this.
I always felt sorry for Mike , he certainly deserved much better than he received . Laura , treated him as if he were a child at times , and usually, with little or no regard for his feelings . Mike , took a great deal of crap from her constantly , despite his continual efforts to accommodate her , whenever she needed his services . She , in my opinion , was abusive , childish , and cruel, to name just a few, she would badger , and victimize him anytime , the mood struck her. But , she could be a decent person to him, when she felt like it , which proves my point , she knew exactly how she was treating him , but , cared little . Or, how her conduct affected their relationship in the long run , Mike , would have been better off without ever meeting her . And when Laura , abandoned Mike , to fly to Brussels , that , was absolutely inexcusable, and incredibly heartless , in my most humble opinion ........,
z and they can’t see that Mike was equally dysfunctional. He was an insecure, wishy washy person and businessman. I found him weak and ineffective. But I love the show because they were both flawed. RIP Michael Williams. I can’t believe it’s been 18 years we’ve been without him. I’m glad that he and Judy were together in real life. ❤️
z what are you yelling for? Then you criticize commenters for getting wrapped up In the show and what did you do? Yelled about Mike calling her old ETC.!!! How childish.
The two series portray different people, different circumstances, written by the same man, Bob Larbey. He was very good at writing light, romantic comedies.
@@bodytv5629 I agree, the writer did make Laura very silly and childish as the series progressed. It became wearisome and unbelievable that Mike would be in love with her, a middle aged, educated woman behaving like a stupid spoiled brat!
Her character is fairly annoying, but she does have her good points too. Plus, living with Mike couldn't have been all that easy either. Half the time he doesn't know what he wants!! As far as this great series goes, they make a perfect couple.
I've enjoyed this series, but gosh she's a completely unlikeable woman, her character. Utterly impossible. The poor guy can't win, and she's horribly childish.
But it takes a wonderful actress to play this part. That’s the whole point. She is very hard to like. He is awkward and finds it difficult to be sociable. They are both quite brilliant at playing these parts.
@@hairyairey Yes Phil and Helen have cute chemistry, so he was a good actor because nobody would have known. It wasn't until some pointed out his mustache, a style at the time. Laura said it perfectly, it was like a little ray of sunshine followed Helen and Phil.
It's awful. I recognise myself in Laura's parents. They don't know how to love her. I have different attitude to my children, although trying hard not to show that.
I recognise myself in Laura. My younger sister was my mother's clear favourite. Even though I was intelligent (could read WELL before I started school), was a brilliant musician (so others said) and was a pitch-perfect singer, got straight A's in school - it just didn't matter. The only one who mattered in my mother's eyes was my sister.
But Laura's dad is the sweetest, the actor they got to play him was perfect. And her mom was really cool because she was so classy naturally, could tell was just a little posher than the rest, didn't have to work at it.
I'm back watching this great series again.
I love the relationship between Laura and her father. So endearing.
I started watching this series last week. I'm hooked on it now ! Brilliantly written and acted.

By all accounts, he was the love of her life. She never remarried after his passing (20 yrs ago).

Michael sent Judi a red Rose every Friday and when he passed, their daughter continues the lovely tradition to this day!! 🌹🤗💕😊
Thats so lovely
Sally bowers was such a wonderful actress.
Lally Bowers, and yes, she was!
Thanks for uploading!
Mike never takes his jacket off when he’s indoors .. 🧐

Agree with everything you said, but also with her double standards that bug me

Mike would be much better off without women!
Mike was stupid. He should have stayed with Elaine. Younger and much nicer than Laura.

I love this series. First time viewer. ❤
I think it's interesting how humor is often written around mental disorders. So glad "As Time Goes By" is less uncomfortable and more humorous.

I know we're supposed to not like Elaine, but I actually did like her.
I'm sad because I started watching this series and fell in love with it but, Laura is so annoying that I can't stand watching it any more.
@z right....that's why I said her character....if you think it's worth finishing it then I will. I do feel incomplete...

The most important person is your Daddy and this shows that.
Mike is as annoying as Laura ever thought about being. More loveably annoying, but still.
Mike's annoying because he thinks he's funny, and always makes himself the center of attention being so serious and awkward.

I find it sad that Mike died 2001...The husband Phil, played by Richard Warwick died 1997. At 52. He died of AIDS.
Richard and Susan were close friends - it shows in their body language it's not just acting.

They are both pathologically annoying. That is the point. The truly wonderfully English embracing of our misanthropic tendencies

These 2 40-somethings are playing 2 13 year olds.
