was out on the tracks earlier today and almost roller because of my mates spotting on this badly rutted out section, grab one my my max trax's and smacked him across the back of the head with it and that worked a real treat for making his spotting actually usable
MrSmitten Great idea. But wouldn't the constant pressure ruin them pretty quick? If not I'm trying it next time I need to sleep in the back of the wagon!
I just grabbed a a handful of 20" ish 2x10 cut offs from different constructions sites and found they worked great. Plus you can use them as a base/ a little extra lift if you have to use a jack in the soft dirt/sand. So far, atleast in my experience I found that more than sufficient for what I need plus if they break I just grab a few more the next week. Added plus if camping you have guaranteed dry kindling by splitting one with as little as a large knife/ hatchet to start a wet fire
They can be used to level your vehicle when camping e.g camper trailer or even your vehicle. Also they're handy when camping on the beach as you can transfer the caravan/camper trailer weight more evenly when setting up and they assist you when you're packing up as the tyres aren't dun into the sand etc.
Great tips! I've been off-roading for decades, but have only recently started buying some tricky tools. These are on my Christmas list, thanks to your video. I've watched several of your instructional videos, and really appreciate them. Keep it up.
In deep soft mud, like Strzelecki after a downpour, drop your tyre pressure as low as 15 or even 10, maybe 8 psi before using your Maxtrax. If you try using them at 25 or even 20 psi, which is what you will likely be driving the track, until you get bogged, the mud will just hold you in the one spot and your tyres will just wear the Maxtrax studs down till they are useless. Dropping your pressure will make the tyre softer on the Trax and give your tyres a nice long footprint on the Trax maximising traction on the board, and increasing the ability of the tyre to grab the board. Additionally, take the time to dig as much mud as you can out from under the tyres so you can get the boards as far under them as possible. Also, dig the mud out from under the car if you cant see through to the other side, otherwise the mud will just hold on to the car. The more work you do in preparation the better the chance you will have of getting out first time and not burn the hell out of your Maxtrax rendering them useless for a second attempt.
I've got my first pair of Maxtrax on their way to me right now (ordered them this morning)!!! This was inspired by me getting stuck in mud and in snow/ice TWICE in the past month. Hated it... and nearly had to spend an extra night in the woods! This is such an important tool to keep in my vehicle!!! Thanks for the video!
doesn't really matter for australia but a friend of mine has a set and we used them to get my VW jetta thats probably only 50-70mm off the ground for the front lip out of the snow one winter. They actually work really amazing in the snow. Not sure how they are on the ice but in 20-30cm of snow they are a life saver If you have the orange ones they would probably work pretty good if your car broke down and you're on the side of the road or highway, lean them against the back help for some visibility so oncoming cars see you a bit better.
Recovery tracks are a must-have staple in my vehicles. I've been really happy with the X-Bull brand! They hold up to plenty of abuse from a Tacoma and a Jeep. .. Some day I'll be able to afford MAXTRAX!
they work so well, I have had mine for about 12 months and used them at Luckey Bay south of Kalbarri for the first time ,they surprised me how well they work ,just enough to get you moving again, we were down to the diffs and on a slight upgrade , we normally would reverse out and give it another go, I used a maxtrax to dig in front of each wheel place a trax in font of each wheel and just drove out
We have used Maxtrax for a while now. We have used cheap versions and they don't come close to being as good. Last off road run we did I had Maxtrax 4 pieces. Two vehicles had the cheap version. The fake ones broke right away and we used mine. When we got back I got every bodies orders together and just made one order. I ordered 9 sets. Each set having 2 pieces. They are not cheap but EVERYBODY is happy with them. We keep finding new things to use them for. It was when I used my set to bridge over twice on two different logs. The third time was when there was a gap crossing and I used them as a bridge. They blew everybody away. I knew we were going to be ordering at least 5 sets before we were even halfway done off roading that day.
you can also use them as a makeshift streatcher if someone is injured in the field. their legs might be dangling off the end of it but it might work in a pinch
Vehicle level. ruff terrain, and your camping up, and you want to sleep on a level angle in your roof top tent. Also if your clearing a large hole, and you want to recover them without getting yourself in the hole, tie a long cord to the boards, and the other end to your rear bumper. once you've cleared the hole, as you drive you will recover them without having to dig them out.
i really appreciate you trying to bring new people into off road fun.best of all, they dont need to sell organs to equip a vehicle to get out and explore nature. anyone with a 4x4 with high and pow range and decent mid price range all terrain tires is a great start and should not break the bank. then the learning begins :)
Can also put them under the tow hitch of your trailer if you need to winch/drag the trailer while it’s not attached to the vehicle. Keeps hitch out of mud/sand and allows trailer to be towed from a distance.
Snow. Although you don't have it there so its fine. I'm from Washington state in the US and its very easy to get stuck in snow. Snow always has different consistency. I've gotten stuck in 6 inches of snow before because it was super wet snow (I only have a factory central diff locker (2001 Range Rover 4.6)). On the other side of the spectrum, I have driven straight through 6 feet of snow no problem (only sunk 3 feet). Maxtrax can be used in snow like they are used in deep mud, however they can be lost in the snow very easily.
hey ronny jordan form bribie island here just letting you know that when in the sand or mud as i have done befor you can lay them down side ways to help get out. have a good day mate
Thanks Ronny. It would be great if you could review some of the cheap copies to see exactly what they can and can't do. Even if not as robust as the MaxTrax, they might be a decent alternative for the occasional beach driver or such.
Another use for them would be as a Back Board for possible Spinal injuries in the backwoods. Although admittedly not ideal and a few might be better then one. They would definitely be a lot better than nothing.
Hi Ronny, great Video" Thanx. Me driving a 15t 4x4 MAN TGS Expedition is wondering if the Maxtrax extreme would be any good for light recoveries e.g in Sand ..any advice appreciated. Thanx Martin
Tip on how to make it easier to locate and/or recover your Maxtrax in muddy/bog hole conditions. Attach a long thin strap [preferably in bright colours] to each boards. Toss the loose end of the strap away from the track [to prevent it getting caught with the tyres]. When it's time to recover the boards, simply pull the straps to lift them out of the mud or use the straps to locate the boards [in very thick deep bog hole].
I live in Canada and I use my max tracks in the snow when ice as well although you do have to be a little careful extreme cold temperatures can make plastics brittle
I just got a pair of these (I have four now), and went out in the sand dunes near Florence, Oregon. They worked better than I could have imagined. I saw several videos of these being used, but I always wondered if it wasn't a bit staged, or the sand wasn't as bad as it looked. I got stuck up to my rock rails, and wasn't budging at all, forward or back. I was aired down to 8psi, and fully locked front and back. I expected to do some digging, or hi-lift jacking, to get out, but wanted to try my new Trax just to see what happened. I scooped out just enough to sand to jam them behind the rear wheels, and didn't expect that to be good enough. That 6,200 pound piglet climbed right out of the hole like it was paved. I did learn that even with the straps out to the side, I nearly buried it all and would have had to dig for them. I'm thinking about using a couple tent stakes to stake the strap out to the side, or a longer rope to tie it to whatever bumper will go by last.
Thinking about getting a set of 4 maxtrax for my chevy avalanche before we get out on the beach. I have a roof rack, and was curious about storage. Does long term storage and sun exposure break down the plastic quickly? or are they safely stored on the roof without protection?
Thanks for this, even though it's a few years old now - still very applicable. Have you found more uses since creating this video? ..... You can use them for 2wd cars too. Just last weekend I parked my VW transporter on the side of the road to unload my dirt bike. The right conditions can bog a 2wd pretty easily. Not many people think to carry them other than 4wd’ers. Mine are only cheap Aldi ones but they’ve paid for themselves a few times.
To go off-road, camping, snow and all climates and terrains, if you had to choose between the Toyota Tundra CrewMax TRD Off-Road 4x4. 2018 and the 4Runner TRD Off-Road 4x4. 2018 what would be your choice and why?
Ronnie, you think the max trax could be used as a ground anchor if buried in the sand, if straps were used through the handles, and then bury the unit in the sand? Curious to know if that would work. Im saving up for a set of these (actually looking at the version 2 models) ,but damn they are expensive.
i have a question about the 79's. i want to correct the track as much as possible without spending thousands on new rear ends. what camber wheels would you reccomend on the front and rear. it doesnt matter if it still isnt perfect, i just want it improoved and i dont want the front wheels to scrub on the arches when i turn
I use tracks to level trailer with tent.... I store them inside RTT on the ladder... Best place I have found to keep em.. I keep them in a bag to not get tent muddy..
How do you feel about cheap ebay knock off's for use on the beach. I drive an old Courier and live in Port Pirie SA. The main use of my truck is beach and salt flats. So i dont need them for most of what you suggested. What you think about buying a set of cheapies for this purpose. I planned on getting Trax but am concerned about the use v money
Ronny have you seen or used the FRP (fibreglass reinforced plastic) recovery boards? the grid type, no lugs and no shovel end.. Any opinions on those compared to Treds or Maxtrax?
I got some last year, haven't had to use them properly yet but I,m pretty happy with them so far. They are bloody strong! no need to stack more than one for bridge building etc but that comes at a cost which is weight id say they are around 8 kg each which adds up if you want to carry 4 of them. I have them ratchet strapped 2 wide across my roof rack on the canopy which makes a great base to tie other stuff down on. not so easy to get to quickly but they are there if I really need them, like I said I don't need them often so it works well for me.
very strong material because i use to make them in mortdale nsw. even the plastic shredder get stop working if you put more than 6 of them, and they cook them i hot water overnight, good product.....
Benjamin Cook they can be used as traction devices for rescuing drivers stuck in the snow. Great for sledding, luging, tobogganing, even snowboarding :)
If you get stuck in sand or mud and you’re alone and have a winch with no recovery points ie trees etc you can dig a hole in the sand or mud and drop your max trax in there facing you and wrap your winch rope around it. You’ll need to dig out a line for the rope too.
I never seen a video detailing this technique. On a really steep sand dune with no run up you can climb a couple of meters at a time. My technique was after I couldn’t go any further and the wheels dug down a little bit instead of trying to dig out in front or put the trax on a really steep angle, I backed up just enough for the wheels to pop up and then shoved the trax in on a fairly flat angle to the dune.
When we were camping at a remote beach where we had a portable shower enclosure, we used Treds to keep our feet free of sand when taking a shower.
What a great idea that has never crossed my mind. Thanks for the tip!
Ouch, ow, ow
I once used one as a medical stretcher to carry out a friend's daughter who had fallen..it worked great we had 4 people holding on to the max Trax ...
was out on the tracks earlier today and almost roller because of my mates spotting on this badly rutted out section, grab one my my max trax's and smacked him across the back of the head with it and that worked a real treat for making his spotting actually usable
Brilliant. I'll be buying an extra set of Max Trax specifically for this purpose. Much easier on the knuckles too.
Great use. ha

You guys can wheel, love seeing what y’all do down under.
i use for the missus, she lies on them for traction, when we do the deed, she stays still instead of squiggling everywhere.....THANKS MAXTRAX

You can use the handles as tie down points as well

I never seen a video detailing this technique. On a really steep sand dune with no run up you can climb a couple of meters at a time. My technique was after I couldn’t go any further and the wheels dug down a little bit instead of trying to dig out in front or put the trax on a really steep angle, I backed up just enough for the wheels to pop up and then shoved the trax in on a fairly flat angle to the dune.
that is cool were did you get those I would like to get some of those
