I have played many hours of League of Dungeoneers solo. I have been playing 2 full characters and 2 mercenaries, although they have been on so many adventures now, that I am considering upgrading them to full characters? I started off with with 4 full characters but one joined another party in my developing story and one was killed so I started using mercenaries. If I had to just keep one game, this would be it. And I decided that I couldn't share my devotion with Dungeon Universalis and so moved that on without playing it.
I can't imagine having the brain power or energy to tackle LoD and a whole other system. LoD looks to be the full package if you want an RPG/boardgame in a box
I want to thank you. I have gotten so many games thanks to your epic reviews (the Ace version of this being one of them, also Fallen Lands, the latest Secrets of the lost Catacomb, Dungeon Crusade and Dungeon Universalis). I love your videos and watch some multiple times. THANK YOU!!!!
I play it with 1 friend and we both run 2 characters -- makes tracking everything muck easier and you can combo strategies with your two characters nicely.
I recognize many of those legendary items on the book from the song "Legend Of The High King" if the league of dungeoneers OST of the stretch goal that is now available on Spotify and RUclips. It's an amazing song!
The acrylic standees were the one thing that bothered me about the campaign. The only way to get them was in that all in deluxe tier. There was no way for a former backer to obtain them without having to get the whole game again and that didn't sit with me well at all
That’s why I’m done with Kickstarters. The amount you save isn’t worth the fact that you’re essentially being treated like a beta tester for the inevitable second edition.
Thank you for featuring those acrylic standees! I would absolutely purchase from the von Braus site or sponsor a crowdfunding effort to make them more widely available. I love miniatures, but have really started to appreciate how great these types of standees can be. Not only do they save space, but that art looks fantastic. I also agree it's unfortunate the original likely needed some more polish, but this scenario - where fixes are released relatively quick and made available at a reasonable price is the best outcome. It's a delicate balance - without the original overwhelming support, maybe there wouldn't even be an updated edition. Regardless, I do think the publisher has demonstrated they can be trusted, which is a good thing. And yes - I'm with you completely - four characters is not my ideal gaming situation; I'm hoping you (or someone) can figure out something that is a bit more streamlined for solo play...
Very excited for this to arrive and it's not long now, the new expansion looks really good with a lot of content. The art, in black and white especially, looks fantastic reminds me a little of the old Fighting Fantasy days. I am please the update pack has new manuals/books and cards and the new blue cover to the rulebook is insane. The only thing that disappointed me during the campaign was as an all-in backer from the first printing the acrylic standees were not available to me unless I bought the game again which clearly I was not going to do. I hope Micheal can find a way to make these available either in future releases or on the website.
Nice! Exciting to see. I am one that prefers the cardboard standees, as the black outline/background ensures that all the fine edge shapes and detail stand (no pun intended) out. But the long term durability of acrylic is definitely very appealing. Hmm…
Do you know if the new rulebook from the second print is the same as the pdf version he is currently selling in his shop ? I would like a printable pdf of the new rulebook for when I get the new set. Also is the pdf just the main rulebook ? Or is more included book wise ?
Best to ask these kinds of questions from the source itself. Michael is very active on the LoD Facebook group, and on the Dungeon Dive Facebook group. He also has a contact option on the LoD webstore.
Thanks, Daniel! I'm intrigued to know more of your solo rpgish approach to this game. I know that you are still looking into the best way of not managing that many characters, without losing the fun of it.
The acrylic standees are lovely, but dont have their individual names printed on them like their cardboard counterparts do. Trying to work out and sort the scrylic standees would be a mammoth task with no reference points
Totally agree with the idea of being able to play with a single character! In Star Saga, this is addressed by playing 4 turns with just one character. Check out too Rangers of Shadow Deep, it’s similar to your approach of having one character and basic 'minions,' which makes the game much easier and agile.
Regret not picking up the upgrade pack. I got first printing and as soon as I got it it was announced that an update would be coming along with the 2nd printing so I delayed getting into it. Then for some reason I skipped backing the upgrade, silly me.
I think they've an amazing job with this game, although it does have some rules inconsistencies, omissions, balance issues in places. I noticed 3 separate problems with the rules in the false prophet expansion. It's the kind of game where you need to make judgment calls and house rules, I think. Considering it was just a small team that put this game together, they have done an outstanding job and have made a top tier dungeon crawler game.
Always appreciate the level of DEPTH & DETAIL to which you review & compare the products that you cover… Just like a line from the Theme Song of the classic James Bond Movie, The Spy Who Loved Me… “NOBODY DOES IT BETTER.” 🥇😂👍
Can't wait for my copy to arrive. Lots of good stuff there! I just hope I can get it to the table. These big games can be a challenge to get the table.
Hey Daniel. Could you provide a link to the standee bases you purchased? I don’t want tear up my standees and I’d rather get a known item than to guess.
These are similar but not the the same store so I can't vouch. The store I bought from no longer exists. www.etsy.com/listing/841466851/flexible-plastic-stands-for-board-game?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=board+game+standee+holder&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&bes=1&sts=1&content_source=5729b400361d43ca66bb2f460e3e5cc6eb1e84b3%253A841466851&search_preloaded_img=1&organic_search_click=1
Thank you for the video, it has helped in checking the contents of my box (my copy arrived a few days ago) but I am also regretting nor getting the acrylic standees after seeing yours! I've never used standees before and was disappointed with how those supplied damage the carboard figures. Consequently, for now, I am using poster putty. Could you say a bit more about the alternative that you mention in the video please? A link would be great, or some key words for a search as currently I am only turning up the same style as used in the game. TIA.
Just like you, I will be paring down the rules of LoD to a HeroQuest level because it's too much to handle solo. I wish the acrylic standees were available to non-Ace backers, but unfortunately, it wasn't the case.
I have really enjoyed running two full heroes and two mercs solo. Once you have the rules down, two heroes is remarkably manageable. Except I have a habit of my hired mercs always dying. Given that I follow the merc reputation rule, it has gotten harder to recruit them 😅.
I just saw ur video on dungeon crawlers and the Quest for The Lost Pixel game looked rly fun, but i dont know where to buy it? I tried the gamcrafter site but they are in the US and im in Denmark so shipping is a problem. Do you know any other places to get it or is that the only way?
You're really good at adapting some of these games into a solo RPG toolkit, and I'm beginning to wonder if a designer/developer collab is in your future (like the "Automa brought to you by" phenomenon with Stonemaier games). I think your insight would add value to so many of these recent crawl/adventure systems in a crowdfunding campaign, specifically ones where the main product isn't *technically* designed for pure solo play. Also, I'd totally grab those acrylic standees in a heartbeat if they were up for sale, either on their store or in another campaign. I'd part with the cost of an expansion for them, honestly, though a little "expansion-lite" content with the acrylic kit would definitely sweeten the deal.
Hi Daniel. I have a question i would like to ask you now uou have had a chance to review the new materials and revised rule book. Would you now regret moving on your copy of League of Dungeoneers and keeping Dungeon Universalis, or does Dun still win out in your opinion?
I have not reviewed the new revised book in detail yet. I don't think I would choose between DUN and LoD - they're both quite different. A better choice could be made between Shadows of Brimstone / Warhammer Quest / Darklight Momento Mori / League of Dungeoneers.
@TheDungeonDive ah, I thought Dungeon Universalos and League of Dungeoneers were very similar games. I wouldn't have thought LoD would be comparable to Shadows of Brimstone, I can see some similarities owning both, but I would have said they were completely different in their own rights
@TheDungeonDive I didn't realise SOB was derived from WHQ, I did think Dungeon Universalis was though, as was LoD? Look forward to watching anymore LoD content if you do any Daniel
Ah, okay. I thought they were actually called prestige classes so I was confused when I didn't hear them mentioned. Still very exciting stuff all in all. :)
Interesting discussion. I wasn’t a huge fan of this one at the end of the day and ended up selling it. I’m MUCH more excited for dungeons of infinity, and waste knights sandbox mode.
Right on! I don’t like it better either. But, it’s the closest to old WHQ, and there is no reason for anyone to buy expensive copies of WHQ any more because this does absolutely everything it does and more, and a lot of stuff it does better. The overland adventure part is way better than the traveling stuff in WHQ. I own everything for both games.
I like crunchiness when it makes the game more memorable, or promotes adventure and engagement. I rarely get that though. Often, those things are hampered by an abundance of rules.

It's one of those 'lifestyle' games, isn't it? I'm glad some of us are able to make a choice 😀

Have you managed to sort all your acrylic standees out and work out what each one is?
Those acrylic standees look great. Can’t wait for my copy to get here, getting more excited the more previews I see. Thanks for the unboxing!
Yes. Thanks for posting this. Im waiting on my haul. Although there is a lot to keep track of, this is my favorite solo dungeon diving game.

Great in depth video. Loved every second :) Excited to flip through the expansion rulebook pages myself!
A shame it wasn't in this state when it first came out....I feel that way about almost every Kickstarter I back

They should be available at some point. They just need to work through some logistics.

I thought for sure we would get new travel cards for the upgrade kit, as that the 1st edition artwork on the back of them was upside down.
I could have spent my time growing up learning a musical instrument, but instead I looked at D & D books, haha.

What size card sleeves would the new ‘town cards’ require? I don’t like the sleeves that come with it so always get my own. Thanks in advance.
Just use the ones that come with the game so you can limit the plastic waste.

Search for "standee holders" or "board game standee" on Etsy. There are some good alternatives.
never clicked on a video so fast
Oh no. I need the acrylic standees 😂
i had 8 acrylic sheets in the main ace box, and three in the False Profit box itself, am i missing something?
Not sure. Probably best to ask over at the super active Facebook group. The designer is super fast to answer questions!

Just Gamecrafter. It’s just made by one guy who wants to keep it as a hobby and not get involved with all the stress of a larger project.

Not for this one. The main thing for me was all the standees.

No. LOD was spawned from the designers love for Advanced HeroQuest, but it’s a much more complex game.
Settlement cards are new, to not have to open the book to see what is in your settlement
Very handy!
Is the tracker in the update pack?
No. It’s coming later.

It’s not designed for solo. But all co-op games are solo games.
