Everyone who complains about Judge Judy asking non-relevant questions. What she's doing is getting a feel for the plaintiff or defendant. Asking simple questions, like where someone works or where they live and for how long, she's finding out how well the person will respond to easy, answerable questions. So when she starts quizzing them on issues pertaining to the case, she can read how truthful they are being, by whether they need to pause and think about their answer first. And she's usually quite adept at reading someone by how well they field her questions.
