  • The future arrived last year: In 2018, a Chinese scientist genetically modified twin babies to be genetically superior. In February 2019, the World Health Organization expert advisory committee, developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing, appointed Jamie Metzl, a leading technology futurist, geopolitical expert and sci-fi novelist.
Metzl has been changing the dialogue around human genome editing and using the medium of sci-fi thrillers to bring it to a wide audience. His published work includes history books examining the western response to human rights abuses during the Cambodian genocide, historical novel The Depths of the Sea, sci-fi thrillers Genesis Code and Eternal Sonata and his latest book Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity, to be released April 23, 2019.
Metzl has served in the US National Security Council, State Department, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as Executive Vice President of the Asia Society and with the United Nations in Cambodia. He appears regularly in national and international media discussing global issues. His syndicated columns and writing on Asian affairs, genetics and virtual reality are featured regularly in publications around the world. An avid ironman triathlete, ultra-marathoner, former White House Fellow and Aspen Institute Crown Fellow, Metzl holds a Ph.D. in Asian history from Oxford, a JD from Harvard Law School, and is a Phi Beta Kappa Magna Cum Laude graduate of Brown University.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Read Metzl's book "Hacking Darwin!" I just finished it and he delves into all of these ideas in much more detail. We're living in what will be defined, as he calls it, the "Genetic Revolution." That's pretty amazing, if you think about it. It really is absurd that we're preoccupying ourselves with any other kinds of news, as he alludes to in his intro, like what celebrity is marrying who.
Indeed, Metzl, Church and Sinclair are going to be looked back on like the Newtons, Galilleos, and Voltaires of the 20th century.
I strongly encourage everyone else to watch lectures and interviews with David Sinclair and George Church. I think in a few of the panel discussions, these three compadres are all guests together, or at least two of them.
    Great Talk! Thanks, TED!

@@tinyrockyplanet8953 Good points, Rocky Planet. However, I'll remind that if there weren't any revolutions, we'd still be living with kings and queens. Or worse, we'd have no technology and we wouldn't even be talking right now.
Every thing that you enjoy today has been possible by some kind of revolution. The information revolution. The industrial information. The Enlightment. The Great Reformation. And dozens before that.
Future ones may include the Space Age, and others. (A.k.a.: the Warp Drive Revolution, and I'm just speculating).
From a totally different angle, all of these hesitations of why this technology could be dangerous almost reaffirms of why it's crucial. That is, we live in a world of mistrust and corruption, what if there was a genomic code that could make people more trusting and less ethically deprived?
In other words, the current state of the world is already flawed, so why would you want to perpetuate a flawed model?
Moreover, I'll strongly think that you'll be changing your tune once a few dozen family members get saved by CRISPR technology, whether they had leukemia, CF, Huntington's disease - I'm sure you'll change your mind once their lives are saved by this technology.
      Thoughts?

Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.
There are many good people in this world, and there are also bad people. If you want to leave God out of this subject, that increases your chances that bad people get control of this type of technology and use it for destruction, devastation, depopulation.
We owe it to our future generations, just as our past generations have done for us, to allow our bodies to function as they have for the entire existence of humanity. Our immune systems are complex and very effective.
Don't you find it funny, humanity goes this long without needing some sort of "gene" editing but in the last 100 years or so, and since bill gae-toes have found some odd infatuation with gene editing, specifically the VMAT2 gene, all of a sudden, "we must do this protect future generations"? WHAT A CROCK-OF-SH*T. That man can't even protect his own software from viruses, why would anyone ever trust him with real ones???

They can make us perfect but if habits are not in place at home, then we can still get obese, diabetic, etc. we end up with some of the same problems. It always comes back to lack of exercise, diet, and diligence (for intelligence). I think rich people would be more convinced because of the perfect physical appearance their babies will receive. If a CRISPR modified fly mates with a regular fly, its offspring will be a direct clone of the modified fly. How can you talk about creationism as "truth" is just what you want to believe Without any evidences. I can tolerate religions, but there are limits to not cross. Religions are just blindfolds for weak and fearful peoples who can't look at the reality and need to submit to something because there are too cowards to accept there are just mere animals on a telluric planet lost in the void of space and absolutely alone because even if extraterrestrial may exist the distance between stars are far too big for hope a contact. Science make humanity progress by its rigorous method and absences of certitudes that permit to always question what we think we know, by this way we improve or knowledge and comprehension of our world. But it's true in the science world there is no comfortable illusion like a wizard who walk on water, multiplying breads and fishes or turning water on wine. The science world may seem cold and fantaisyless, but it is actually our best tool to learn about the world. But I understand you don't want to accept science, you hide in your childish stories because you're too terrifying by your own mortality, so you shut down your brain and blindly believe in a paradise where live an old guy who magically create things.
