    Looks like you had the right idea. As of 06-16-22 only 1074 fish passed the sonar into Russian Lake. Hopefully all the fish are still stacked in the Sanctuary. It seems the run is starting a little late for the last couple of years.

      It was definitely work getting them but a good challenge nonetheless. It’ll only get better but they are late by a week at least I’d say. I’m thinking another rain storm would do the trick to get them moving in.

      I like the uglystik bigwater 9wt. It’s a 2 piece so it’s harder to pack into the spot but it’s affordable and tough.

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 года назад +1

      We didn’t run into any bears and the park didn’t have any warnings out yet, or sightings to report.
      There was quite a few hikers on the main trail but not many fisherman on the river yet.
      The river was filling up with fish while we were there so I’m sure the bears are standing by!

    Thanks so much for posting! Congrats on your catch! Remembering my Alaska trip from a few years ago! Caught Halibut off Homer. Must return for Salmon. So are these fish done spawning-like on their way to die?

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 года назад +2

      These fish are just returning to the fresh water from the ocean and have not spawned yet. However, at this spot they are nearly to the spawning grounds but not quite there yet.
      These Russian river fish must still get up the falls and into the lake before they can spawn, and ultimately die. All of these beautiful chrome salmon will begin to turn bright red with green heads after just a couple weeks in the fresh water too, quite the spectacle!

    I looked for this spot today with no luck, any way you might give up some more details on where to break off the main trail? These videos are great!

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 года назад +2

      hmmmm... this is like asking for my social security number on the internet!!! lol jk. When you're hiking in on the main trail and get to the top, the trees open up and you can see the mountain tops really well. The main trail begins a subtle downhill slope and is relatively straight. The entrance for the trail to bear hole is on the right and is heavily treed. Good luck! I seen 3 bears there two nights ago...

      @@alaskasmallcraftadventures Thank you! I only fish the Russian 1-2 times a year so I won’t crowd the spot much if I can find it haha. It was a slow fishing day today but had fun hiking around looking for this spot and laughing at how many crooked trees and little trails there were. Thank you, I appreciate the videos and information!

      I’d imagine between Alaska and Florida you’re looking at two completely different worlds. What a transition! And not to mention getting spoiled by these rivers as a first timer! My first experience was the ninilchik river harbor king salmon fishing back when you could walk across their backs from one side of the river to the other! I’m no guide and I leave that work up to the professionals, but when you get here let me know and I’ll see about getting you pointed in the right direction!
