The NaI(Tl) scintillation counter is a good instrument for uranium exploration as it responds only to gamma radiation and has a higher efficiency than a GM as the detector is a dense solid rather than a gas and as a result of the superior counting statistics it can detect the gamma radiation from a boulder or outcrop at a greater distance than a GM unit. When working with uranium ore or doing down-hole logging, we use a GM in combination as it doesn't saturate as easily as the scintillation counter.
