With Dorothea, it was all basically a big misunderstanding, which is not a very satisfying conclusion. You'd think they'd challenge Dorothea's preconceived judgements about someone, for being apart of a certain group of priviledge, where she would self-reflect. IDK, I think holding a grudge against someone, for five years, for crime of glaring at you, when they were 10, is a little F'd up. Now, they did show that she did care about Ferdie, as shown in the B support, but its clear that she held some kind of distain for him, all that time.
It is such a shame Billy Kametz is gone so soon. He really helped bring Ferdinand to life. Things like this would not have been as well done without his performance.
My favourite of Bernie's romantic pairings (i.e. not counting Alois). The A support is cute, but the B support is what sells it for me. While some of Bernadetta's C support panic attacks are so over-the-top that the other person can't be held responsible, there are also plenty of cases of people deciding that the best treatment for someone afraid to interact with people is to ignore everything she says (or screams) and just (sometimes literally) drag her into situations she's afraid of. Her B support with FERDINAND VON AEGIR is about the only time someone apologizes for that. (Looking at you, Caspar.)

Idea for an S-support. While in the town at Garreg Mach, Bernadetta is accosted by some men led by none other than her father, the former Count Varley. Count Varley is supposed to be in exile, but he does not intend to allow Bernadetta to inherit his title and land, and tries to kill her. Ferdinand intervenes and defeats Count Varley and all his men, sparing the former count's life since Bernadetta would not approve of killing him. Count Varley then starts raving over how he'll never let Bernadetta have his inheritance. To everyone's surprise, Bernadetta then shuts her father up by declaring that she's renouncing her claim to House Varley. She then (comically) says that she's in love with Ferdinand, and that her inheritance means nothing by comparison. Then, realizing what she has just blurted out, Bernadetta starts panicking again. Ferdinand then happily confesses how much he loves Bernadetta, much to her joy. As the two accept each other's proposal, Count Varley is dragged off to prison, screaming madly at his daughter all the while. --- I know some of you would've wanted Ferdinand to kill Count Varley, but I think forcing him to reap what he sow is a sweeter punishment.
My prefered option was to handle Bernadetta and her dad (other than just having her introduce her family to her new commoner friend Dorothea and her meteor spell, as you mentioned) is with a paralogue mission. There is a lot of good narrative potential in the relationship between Bernadetta, Count Varley, Edelgard and the Church of Seiros that is currently completely wasted. First, write her out of the Petra paralogue (this should not be difficult, as the cutscenes themselves make a point of how Bernadetta has nothing to do with that story). Replace this with a post-timeskip paralogue with Shamir in any non-Crimson Flower route. Since Count Varley opposed Edelgard's rule, there could be strategic benefits to the church to getting his support. Since he's explicitely stated to be placed under house arrest by Edelgard, any attempt to reach or free him would greatly benefit from having the one person who grew up in that house (and left it as little as possible) on the team, especially since any operation that deep into imperial territory would have to be done as quickly and quietly as possible. And Shamir is both a logical proponent and executer of such a "commando raid", and ruthless enough to deliberately intimidate Bernadetta into helping. Byleth could walk by during the shakedown, notice the panicked screams, and eventually negotiate a compromise where he plus the army accompanies Bernadetta as protection. The resolution of this mission can go in several interesting ways, aided by some tweaks in the actual mission design (splitting up deployment on an indoor map so that Bernadetta is with a small group and thus has to be fighting, putting a goal tile that Bernadetta must reach, etc.) It could end up with Bernadetta, a veteran of a dozen battles and having just fought her way through a dozen guards, comes face to face with the old frail man who has been essentially imprissoned for five years and start to wonder why she should still have to be afraid of him. Since paralogues are optional and other cutscenes and support have to be written without knowing if the player does it, it can't radically change Bernadetta's behavior, but that's fine. A clean and pretty "cure" to a childhood trauma wouldn't be realistic anyway. If you wanted to make the story a bit nastier, it could turn out that he's a misogynistic old bastard who didn't support Edelgard because she's girl, but also has no interest in helping Shamir or Rhea for the same reason. This would probably end with a beating by Shamir, and can include nice bits like Shamir apologizing to Bernadetta for refusing to listen to her warnings that her father was terrible and not worth rescuing and/or the Count refusing to give Shamir what she came for only for Bernadetta to defy her father and tell her exactly where he's probably hiding it, what the vault code is, that sort of thing. On the nicer end of the spectrum, one could also have the sight of his daughter fighting his way through the army of Edelgard whom he opposed for principled reasons making the Count realize he was wrong to treat his daughter like a failure that was only fit to be a meek wife. The even nicer one where it turns out her father wasn't as bad as Bernadetta remembers, while not inconsistent with Bernadetta assuming half her classmates want to kill her during her C supports, is not really feasible without some serious rewriting of some of the explict details in her support conversations (beating up a commoner who befriended her and tying her to a chair for hours come to mind). Honestly, the only reason I'd even consider it was because it made a really powerful moment in Psychnauts, but I don't think you can make it work here. Still, with these and probably half a dozen other variations, we could've gotten a lot more satisfying resolution to Bernadetta's story arc than the one we got. I can only hope for some DLC content, but I'm not holding my breath. From the over-the-top panic attacks played for comedy, I get the feeling that not all of the writing staff was very happy about including Bernadetta.

It's because Dorothea used to be a street urchin until the Mittelfrank Opera Company recruited her, and she's terrified that once she grows old and no longer capable of singing, she'll end up back in the streets, so she's looking for a partner who she can grow old and financially secure with. So she has ulterior motives for hitting on Byleth.
Such a terrific support there. Seeing Bernie blush satisfies our heart and soul. Man, imagine telling her what’s her favorite Super Mario Bros character and her answer is…… A Piranha Plant!

SPOILER Playing through on the Blue Lions and we just had to kill Ferdinand. I had been trying to recruit him but ran out of time before the timeskip. Going back and watching his support videos with the other characters makes me feel even worse about it. :'(
That's how I felt when I killed Ashe in my first play through. Hurt so much that I always recruited him or did not fight him. When I played the Blue Lions route I didn't kill Bernadetta, Linhardt, Dorothea but sadly could not avoid not killing Caspar and Ferdinand
I was able to recruit Dorothea but I only got his B support with Dorothea and so was unable to recruit him. Really added to Dorotheas line about "cutting down Ferdie" Fucking oof man.
@@DSeditor22 He is one of the relatively harder units to recruit. His B Support is locked till after the time-skip, I think, so you can't hope to autorecruit him like with most other units. So if you want to recruit him, you need to get up your Heavy Armor skill which isn't really a common investment for Byleth.
The thing I like about Ferdinand, is that he actually learns from his mistakes in most supports. Especially with Bernie and Dorothea.
Ferdinand literally did nothing to Dorothea.
