In the United States, pole dancing was more or less introduced alongside what became stripping, at least in part because you often need more revealing clothing so your body can grip the pole for tricks. Plus some of the tricks can kind of feel a little like you’re showing your privates even though you’re clothed lol As a person doing pole fitness (pole dancing but both the title itself and the training emphasize strength and flexibility training rather than performance/erotic performance) in the west, the sexualization can feel hard to get away from sometimes. I’ve personally never been harassed or told that I shouldn’t be doing pole (the most I’ve gotten is just surprise lol), and I think the perception may be slowly changing, but I’m still somewhat selective about who I tell that I’m doing pole fitness. Like, I haven’t told anyone at my workplace, just in case it would become gossip. As a person who prefers to dress more modestly, I appreciate this anime for not sexualizing it, and I like that the characters get more modest costumes. It gives me ideas for what I could wear as costumes for showcases 😊
This episode highlights the general problem surrounding this project; most people unfortunately associate pole dancing with strip clubs and similar sexual-related activities without even making an effort to explore or look into the sport, exercise and artistic forms of pole dancing :( Aside from the anime itself focusing on the artistic aspects, the restaurant exchange was nice to see :) If only more people were as open-minded... I really love the video integrations on the smartphones BTW; not something I see often in animation, at least with such high quality :)
It is true, though. When you think of dance, you would imagine street dance, hip hop dance, ballet, contemporary dance, samba, etc. But, you wouldn't think or expect pole dancing to be seen on tv or any dance competition. You would always think of them to be something shown on strip bars. I recently watched AGT who has a pole dancer but it was really hard not to think about the bad image that pole dancing has that you wouldn't expect an approach that makes the style to be appealing to an audience full of people with varying age and genders.
You know, Mio kind of reminds of Minami Kotori from Love Live. Her vibes kind of similar to Kotori maybe because she has a very soft and cute voice and a very gentle demeanor.
Now this demonstrates part of what intrigued me about this series in the first place. That it's going about what is a touchy subject matter with a kind of nuance. I mean as shown here when people hear the words "Pole Dancing" it tends to have a negative connotation with "Strip Club" in their heads. And the displays of Pole Dancing in an athletic or artistic form from what we've seen thus far, it's displaying them in a way that is more sensual than sexual. So with all that said I really do hope this series continues to do a good job in this light with this subject matter. Well that aside. With Mio the cosplayer in their ranks she'll probably also help solve problems with those stage costumes down the line.
