P.S.- Another rare machine that i grew up playing, and is in my top 5 favorites is F-Zero AX (also, my favorite racing series). I used to work at a entertainment park called Golfland Sunsplash back when it actually had decent games and i helped maintain the machines. The F-Zero AX was an awesome set-up. One of my favourite arcade games of all time. I'd love to see the original cab again but I have a steering wheel, a light gun and a huge collection of roms. I'll have to get it all working together.
My recent experience with this game indicates that two moderately inebriated adults can blast through this game with a continue or three per level depending on how serious they're playing. It's definitely a quarter muncher.... but it's also pretty short... so the overall $$$ damage is not too bad Not sure if there are difficulty DIP switches though... so YMMV for sure what an absolute blast, this game is such an absolute treasure

Another missed opportunity for the Sega Saturn. If you design a console that is basically a System 32 you should be porting everything super scaler too it yet the vast majority of games never got home conversions. I wish Namco would have made Saturn games, this would have been a perfect game to port on the Sega Saturn. Does anyone know why Namco and Square soft just avoided Sega?
Namco and Sega had a rivalry in the arcade market dating back to the early '80s. Namco had fully embraced arcade 3D technology and the PS1 as a pure 3D system was a good fit. Nearly every Namco game for the PS1 was a 3D game. Sony and Namco co-developed the PS1-based System 11 board. Namco became more of a partner than an ordinary third-party dev with Sony and also had more favorable licensing terms, compared to the stricter terms under Nintendo and Sega previously. Square or Enix never released a game for the Mega Drive, which wasn't big in Japan. Despite the MD having some excellent RPGs, Sega consoles weren't generally known for RPGs. I think Square and Enix thought that the PS1 had more potential to become the next big RPG system.
Only just clicked on, and not watched the video yet, but f**king A, this is one of my most fun experiences in the arcades bar none. And one of my favourite youtubers doing a video I know it's gonna be an awesome watch. Anybody else play it 'drive by style' with one hand on the wheel and the other for the gun? I emulate on Series X and it's kinda heartbreaking there's no gun available for X-Box that would work. I already got a crappy wheel for arcade racers so I'm half there (those £30 multi-platform ones for Xbox/PS4/PC that just take over your controller functions and aren't recognised as a real wheel like those £300 simulator ones, works so much better for arcade racers than a proper sim-wheel does, and they work in emulators for stuff like Chase HQ and outrun on MAME and those old school arcade racers on PS1/PS2/GC/Dreamcast etc... as well as making stuff like Need for Speed, Ridge Racer, Burnout and Split Second WAYYYYY more fun. They eat a big bag of asses for stuff like Asseto Corsa and Forza Motorsport though.) **EDIT - Damn, everyone in the comments had a player 1 gun as well, so either the arcade near me must have a busted one, or the model was different in Europe, as there was no player one gun on my mine and it cost another 50p to use the player 2 gun. I would have saved so much money back in the day.**
The arcade version was always kinda cumbersome to play since the gun was attached to the dashboard. I mainly played Lethal Enforcers at the time sine I thought super scaler type games weren’t interesting since home ports always sucked. Which was a weird way to look at things…
lol it’s never stopped people before. It’s social media. People will start an argument over anything 🤣 you could give them $100 for free and they’d complain it’s five twenties and not a single hundred
If you can get a Wii USB sensor bar, a Wiimote and a Nunchuck, it's a great way to play it on your PC. Or maybe on a Wii U with MAME, I'm not up to how good MAME on WiiU is right now
Oh I love sprite scalers, I was lucky to have played this in the wild. What do you think was the best / most technological use of the tech? Galaxy Force II? Thank God for the 3ds M2 ports.
HELL YEAH Lucky and Wild! Awesome arcade game. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this would make an awesome VR game, either a port of the original or a new game inspired by the original. Driving games are awesome in VR. Shooting games are awesome in VR. The combination would be perfect for the hardware.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I'd think super scalers could work really well in VR with the high resolutions and framerates. And I'd bet they'd even run great on less powerful VR hardware like the Quest 2. Seems like developers are leaving money on the table.
Is there some sort of database where i can fish out all mounted-gun (potentiometer, not lightgun tracking) sprite-scaler arcade games? I'm trying to remember something.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Looking for a darkish reddish zombie-ish game of the first person rail shooter kind that i played exactly once more than 30 years ago, so between 1992 and 1995, at a random railroad station in Crimea. Mounted gun and sprite scaling. Absolutely unfair, horrible coin muncher. At the time i had a self-built ZX Spectrum clone at home (a Leningrad 48k), and some of my friends had a Dendy or Ending-Man (Famiclone).
Never have seen this in the wild or played it. At least, not that I can remember. Did spend some time in Japan in 1993 and so it is possible that I encountered it then. Is this supported by Mister yet? Would like to try it but controls might be cumbersome.
Do you know / have the pinout for the edge connector that takes the analogue inputs for the steering, brake & accel, and gun positioning? I can't seem to find it documented online.
@ If at all possible, it would be most appreciated if you’re able to dig it up and share it, please. I just acquired the board yesterday so I’m keen to wire up a rig to play it.
@VideoGameEsoterica I'm not sure if I've played this or something similar using emulation years ago . I think the controller made it a miserable experience but I can see why you'd like this classic, especially with 2 players, light gun and steering wheel. . Is there a modern day equivalent?
I LOVE THIS GAME. There is a working, playable cab at Barcade in Philadelphia. Every time I hit up that bar with people, it's SUCH a treat to hand them a fistful of tokens and blast our way through this one. It's also great since it's inside a BAR, which means you can drink while playing the game... and (virtually) "driving" lmao
This game is not exactly my cup of pee. It has the same enormous popups of screen filling props like Thunderblade, and so IMO was an era where sprite scaling already a bit had lost its soul (making just even bigger and blockier madness like Pitfighter, without caring for fine graphical details anymore). But it has some interesting ideas; I like the truck 7:00 dropping multiple cars onto the road or 9:40 the burning obstacles falling inside a tunnel.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes, sort-of...😉 I ceased to have fun in war-like shooting games (there is too much genuine war in this world now). But I would love to make a disaster driving simulator about driving through similar chaos full of destroyed roads and bridges, flooded sceneries, lava or forest fire (waiting too long nearby a fire burns your car etc.). Missions like rescuing injured people or bringing supply goods into a disaster area is nicer than just a shoot-em-up.
It's pretty, but not as pretty as something like Outrunners in my view. The draw distance is quite short and the roads flat with little verticality. There doesn't seem to be any cool weather effects either, like in some other sprite-scalers. On the plus side, the scaling works smoothly and isn't glitchy, even though there's a lot going on in this game

They had every game you could possibly imagine. They even had a mini theater of Galaxian 3.
However namco jump ship to Sony during the preparation of the ps1.
So many good sprite callers that could have been great on Saturn
Yeah that was a bummer for Sega
@@VideoGameEsoterica OutRunners/Racing Hero/NBA Run N Gun 1+2/Soccer Superstars/Galactic Storm/Night Striker/Galaxy Force 2/Thunder Blade/Super Chase/Top Speed/Chase HQ/Operation Thunderbolt/Rambo 3/Aqua Jack etc.
I’ll take them all!
I wish Namco would have made Saturn games, this would have been a perfect game to port on the Sega Saturn. Does anyone know why Namco and Square soft just avoided Sega?
I’ve never heard a real reason but my guess is Sony showed up with cash
Sony just had the momentum that generation too. Same with PS2 era
I assumed this was 3D rendered until you said it wasn’t. That’s really impressive 2D scaling.
Yes the pseudo 3D is very convincing
They eat a big bag of asses for stuff like Asseto Corsa and Forza Motorsport though.)
**EDIT - Damn, everyone in the comments had a player 1 gun as well, so either the arcade near me must have a busted one, or the model was different in Europe, as there was no player one gun on my mine and it cost another 50p to use the player 2 gun. I would have saved so much money back in the day.**
Haha that’s the only way I play it. Driving and shooting GTA style
The arcade version was always kinda cumbersome to play since the gun was attached to the dashboard. I mainly played Lethal Enforcers at the time sine I thought super scaler type games weren’t interesting since home ports always sucked. Which was a weird way to look at things…
Lethal Enforcers was a classic
I don't think there's any arguing against the vid title this time. 🚓🔫
lol it’s never stopped people before. It’s social media. People will start an argument over anything 🤣 you could give them $100 for free and they’d complain it’s five twenties and not a single hundred
If you can get a Wii USB sensor bar, a Wiimote and a Nunchuck, it's a great way to play it on your PC.
Or maybe on a Wii U with MAME, I'm not up to how good MAME on WiiU is right now
That’s actually a good combo idea. I’ll give it a shot
Need true next gen version of this would be sick....
I’d love a next gen sequel
Oh I love sprite scalers, I was lucky to have played this in the wild. What do you think was the best / most technological use of the tech? Galaxy Force II? Thank God for the 3ds M2 ports.
Art and design wise my fav is Night Striker
@VideoGameEsoterica definitely a cool aesthetic with some great music. Have the Mega CD and Saturn port.
I can’t wait for the sequel. Wild we are getting one
Sad I never saw this one in the wild, back in the day. I would have loved it. Ah well.
You never know. One day it might pop up
Tango and Cash the game with a taste of chase HQ...
A potent combo
HELL YEAH Lucky and Wild! Awesome arcade game.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this would make an awesome VR game, either a port of the original or a new game inspired by the original. Driving games are awesome in VR. Shooting games are awesome in VR. The combination would be perfect for the hardware.
I’d love to see a ton of super scalers recreated in VR
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah I'd think super scalers could work really well in VR with the high resolutions and framerates. And I'd bet they'd even run great on less powerful VR hardware like the Quest 2.
Seems like developers are leaving money on the table.
@GreyMatterShades I wish someone would try
Is there some sort of database where i can fish out all mounted-gun (potentiometer, not lightgun tracking) sprite-scaler arcade games? I'm trying to remember something.
Not that I’ve ever seen
@@VideoGameEsoterica Looking for a darkish reddish zombie-ish game of the first person rail shooter kind that i played exactly once more than 30 years ago, so between 1992 and 1995, at a random railroad station in Crimea. Mounted gun and sprite scaling. Absolutely unfair, horrible coin muncher.
At the time i had a self-built ZX Spectrum clone at home (a Leningrad 48k), and some of my friends had a Dendy or Ending-Man (Famiclone).
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know what maybe it was original SNK Beast Busters (1988). Man it looks a lot worse than i remember it.
Zombie Raid?
Could be that too
Never have seen this in the wild or played it. At least, not that I can remember. Did spend some time in Japan in 1993 and so it is possible that I encountered it then. Is this supported by Mister yet? Would like to try it but controls might be cumbersome.
No sadly no MiSTer core. Hopefully one day
For you, what are the most accurate cores on Mister ? Megadrive, Neo-Geo ?
Neo-Geo/SNES/Mega Drive/PC Engine
@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks 😉
When I was a kid, a guy once called me over and paid for me to be player 2 for a whole run. I have no idea how much he spent, but it was a lot.
Haha that story could have gone badly. Glad it didn’t!
@@VideoGameEsoterica lol I can confidently say I only ever had wholesome experiences with strange adults in arcades.
As it should be!
Could you do clip about Rapid River (Namco)?
I don’t believe it runs well enough for coverage yet
Do you know / have the pinout for the edge connector that takes the analogue inputs for the steering, brake & accel, and gun positioning? I can't seem to find it documented online.
I believe I do somewhere here
@ If at all possible, it would be most appreciated if you’re able to dig it up and share it, please. I just acquired the board yesterday so I’m keen to wire up a rig to play it.
Contact me on discord or Twitter so I can send it when I find it
Man me and my boy Billy used to play the shit out of this in 7th grade
Good way to spend some time!
Excellent
Just a perfect game IMo
@VideoGameEsoterica I'm not sure if I've played this or something similar using emulation years ago . I think the controller made it a miserable experience but I can see why you'd like this classic, especially with 2 players, light gun and steering wheel. . Is there a modern day equivalent?
Not really a modern day equivalent in the last 15 years
ooh looks fun
Def give it a shot
All that you could want.
The perfect mix
I LOVE THIS GAME. There is a working, playable cab at Barcade in Philadelphia. Every time I hit up that bar with people, it's SUCH a treat to hand them a fistful of tokens and blast our way through this one.
It's also great since it's inside a BAR, which means you can drink while playing the game... and (virtually) "driving" lmao
It’s the perfect co-op game. Especially with drinks!
This game is not exactly my cup of pee. It has the same enormous popups of screen filling props like Thunderblade, and so IMO was an era where sprite scaling already a bit had lost its soul (making just even bigger and blockier madness like Pitfighter, without caring for fine graphical details anymore). But it has some interesting ideas; I like the truck 7:00 dropping multiple cars onto the road or 9:40 the burning obstacles falling inside a tunnel.
lol did you mean tea?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes, sort-of...😉 I ceased to have fun in war-like shooting games (there is too much genuine war in this world now). But I would love to make a disaster driving simulator about driving through similar chaos full of destroyed roads and bridges, flooded sceneries, lava or forest fire (waiting too long nearby a fire burns your car etc.). Missions like rescuing injured people or bringing supply goods into a disaster area is nicer than just a shoot-em-up.
Haha
Just an fyi that your discord server link in the description is broken
Thanks. I had to change some up
Hahaha. Good one VGE. 8^)
They should release this on switch..
I’d certainly play it
or you can do what me , my bother or my Dad did when i was a kid.....all play at once with good old dad at the steering wheel
Drive by with dad haha
It's pretty, but not as pretty as something like Outrunners in my view. The draw distance is quite short and the roads flat with little verticality. There doesn't seem to be any cool weather effects either, like in some other sprite-scalers. On the plus side, the scaling works smoothly and isn't glitchy, even though there's a lot going on in this game
Roads just flatted to accommodating the shooting mechanics it feels like
this game is so good, it sucks it got kinda slept on :(
Yes it should be way more well known than it is
I love sprite scalers, but I find that 'Damage' hit and flash infuriating and distracting . . . .
It’s a vibe but I love it
