Lay spent three years preparing for this MV. The styling in“开天” (Kai Tian - Opening the Heaven) references Pangu, the mythical figure described as having “the head of a snake and the body of a dragon” (蛇首龙身). The song is released on January 1, a date chosen to coincide with the transition from the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Snake, reflecting the imagery of the snake’s head and dragon’s body. The cracks on Lay’s face can be interpreted in two ways: as fissures representing the earth splitting open (symbolizing Pangu’s creation of heaven and earth) or as the cracks on a snake egg. According to ancient mythology, Pangu was said to have been born from a snake egg, giving the impression that he has just emerged from the egg, bearing its cracks and the naïveté of entering the world for the first time. The phrase “化左眼为日,开启太阳纪” (“transforming the left eye into the sun, ushering in the solar era”) explains the heterochromatic eyes. This links to the mismatched-eye motif seen on the cover of his album “莲” (Lit) and in the final scene of the “What Do You Need” MV from his first album “Lose Control”, where the left eye is briefly revealed as heterochromatic. The “solar era” refers to a 12-year cycle, aligning with Lay’s 12th year since debut. Starting from January 1, it marks the beginning of his 13th year in the industry and the start of a new solar era, corresponding with the studio’s announcement of a “new chapter.” It feels like the conceptual framework Lay wants to present was already formed at the start of his solo career. Every step since then has been a building block for this grand system. He spent 12 years completing the first “ enormous circle”in his heart. What kind of mind is this? It’s absolutely incredible.
It’s not quite bragging though, it aligns with hiphop genre i guess. And he stamps his manifesto on what he tries to create, which is the mix-mandarin pop genre, like Lit, Flying Apsara, Veil and here Kai Tian. And you are right, Kai Tian is the continuity of Lit. He started this song at the same time as Lit. There are some fans who explain the concept of Kai Tian and Pangu myth quite well. His West and East albums are very good too 😊
You should look up the mythology of Pangu. This video is very much refenrencing it and Kaitian was his axe that he used to split the heavens and earth. It really adds a lot, as the giant Lay at the end is reminiscent of when Pangu falls and his body becomes different features in the universe. Love the reaction!!
Really like this song. So powerful!

Lay continues to grow a little bit more confident in the music he appreciate and showcase to the world with his beautiful culture
