    The opera house from TR2 was the scariest for me. It's so dark and there aren't many enemies, but somehow the whole level made me feel like I was being watched. It was so uncomfortable

      It’s always scary when Tomb Raider games have you explore abandoned sites, whether it’d be an abandoned monastery (St. Francis’ Folly), abandoned opera house, abandoned subway (Aldwych), or abandoned exhibit (Egyptian Adventure in Coastal Ruins), mostly with enemies coming out of nowhere, or the place being booby-trapped without warning.

    • @AxMania

      Yes, I agree! It was really hard to narrow this down to a top 10. The Opera House level is easily one of the creepiest levels in the series.

      Opera House was a brilliant piece of design. Creepy sound effects, ominous music, dark corners, jump scares, booby traps, hidden enemies, the list could go on.

    You forgot about the scariest encounter in all of Tomb Raider history... Winston.😀
    Dude legit used to scare me he always seemed to appear. But more seriously the yetis scare me the most nowadays. I think it's just the noises they make because they're fairly fragile enemies that if you have enough space are pretty easy to out maneuver too.

    Being left at the bottom of a dark ocean with sharks, the air in your lungs is all you have, and there's no way of knowing how to escape (40 Fathoms, TR2) was probably the scariest moment for me! The TR games are sooo immersive, situations like that are all the more intense and make you feel truly lost and desperate! There were so many times as a kid where I'd panic, push the inventory button or pause, and hand the controller to my mom because I couldn't handle it lol!! Great top 10, I love that the eel was in there because I jumped when you mentioned it in another ranking video, even fully knowing what was coming 😅

    • @AxMania

      Yes, the opening of 40 Fathoms is so terrifying! Not just the sharks, but the immediate fear of drowning, and not being sure where to go makes you feel desperate, haha! I did the same :D My keyboard has had many panicked Esc button slams, due to cruel mummy, cobra etc. ambushes.

    Im really surprised theres no Tomb Raider 4 mentions. I remember being too scared to beat the first tomb in egypt cause of how creepy the atmosphere was and cause of the jackals and mummies. The part where the bull bursts through the door terrified me as well. All the Cairo levels were very creepy too.

    • @ajmohawk2993
      @ajmohawk2993 2 года назад +15

      For the Cairo levels, what scared me were the mechanical machine turrets that would fire at you constantly when in range, then activate the flamethrower on you when you get close.
      Plus, seeing Von Croy possessed in Citadel was creepy.
      The Lost Library was perhaps the hardest and scariest level to beat. Cairo levels are like a maze. The bull charging through the doors did scare me, but I got used to it as it helped to activate some panels on the walls.

    • @AxMania

      It was so difficult to narrow this list down to just 10, perhaps I should've made a top 20 instead, haha! The Last Revelation has a lot of creepy moments for sure! It's only that I happen to have 10 moments from the other games that I find scarier ☹️ I agree with The Tomb of Seth, that entire opening cave has an amazing presence.

    • @ajmohawk2993
      @ajmohawk2993 2 года назад +9

      @@AxMania Speaking of The Tomb of Seth, there’s a moment where as Lara and her guide continue through the opening cave, a cutscene commences where the camera comes out of an entrance towards Lara as the eerie music plays, which turns out to be an Egyptian dog that attacks. That moment has stayed with me after playing that section of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation.
      Sometimes, I wonder what made the guide so spooked when opening the door to the Hourglass that he ran away back up the stairs.

      Dragging a corpse to get to a trap door was definitely hella creepy in tr4 😆 The city levels we're pretty creepy overall, you just knew something BAD happened there. I also liked the enemies you couldn't technically kill (scarabs, ghosts) so you'd just have to keep running away and hoping they couldn't reach you after a while.

    The background soundtrack in Aldwych level is quite scary and gives tension when you go into the metro tunnels where a train can appear and hit you violently, especially being a newbie without knowing the level
    Tinnos's background soundtrack fits perfectly in Reunion level being a scary kind of Dimension of the Dead

I was so startled it took me 3 days to gather the courage to come back to finish the level lmao. Also, the entire Aldwych level always terrified me bc I'm a bit claustrophobic and they truly chose violence when they placed those jumpscares in an abandoned underground level.

    When I was little it always creeped me out how after dying in classic Tomb Raider the camera would just linger there until you pressed buttons on the controller. You're used to just reloading or respawning in most games pretty quickly after death so having the camera just staring at your corpse really reinforced the feeling that YOU ARE DEAD, and that your body's probably gonna be trapped in a tomb decaying for all eternity forgotten by the rest of the world. Bonus points if you died impaled on spikes or something like that, destined to become one of the billion skeletons you walked past who've died to those traps in the past...

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  2 года назад +6

      Yes, that's a really good point! That's super creepy. Often in games in the 90's, a death had a sort of "melody", or "Game Over" text or something, that made it feel more lighthearted or like a game, but in Tomb Raider it's just eerie silence and Lara's corpse for seconds. Haha, exactly!

    The spider cave...... The SPIDER CAVE!!
    I remember being afraid of it back then! I was not even afraid of spiders but as a 8 year old back then knowing ahead of time there would be giant spiders in there, I would not feel okay pressing forward! I eventually did, but damn. My personal worst actually was the chapel from Chronicles in the intro area of the Labyrinth map. Once the skeletons spawn, the ghostly ones with swords, I lose my shit, still do to this day to a degree. The reason for that is my personal experience of having had nightmares as a kid of skeletons with giant swords chasing me in the dark, after watching an animated movie, I couldn't tell you which one, but I know it featured skeleton swordsmen. May have been a Disney one, I don't know. That was way before Chronicles though. When I played that level and saw those skeletons, I kid you not, I ate an entire box of biscuits as stress relief in one go.

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  2 года назад +3

      Haha! I think it's incredibly cruel of Core Design when they drop those giant spiders on you. Young kids played these games! I understand, the Ireland levels are so obviously designed to be scary. I agree completely by the way, I also think the chapel from that entire section is the scariest part. The fixed camera also makes it quite hard to navigate, which adds to the tension when there are so many enemies.
      Hmm, that's really interesting. I love to uncover old memories of animated movies and stuff from my childhood. An animated movie with skeletons carrying swords sound familiar. The Black Cauldron, perhaps?

    Damocles room itself was scary when leaving the room after getting the key - the swords activate and you have to dodge them as you escape.

      In Natla’s Mines, the cowboy saying “Ain’t nothin’ personal.” However, that room is where one of the fuses is, and you have to walk and stay on that block it’s on, then slowly walk away. That’s a strange place for them to put a fuse.
      But the biggest scare was in the final room, where the big guy says: “SAY CHEESE!” Scared me so much 😱
      Sometimes, Lara’s voice during the tutorial level caught me off guard, like in Tomb Raider III, when you approach the staircase, she’ll suddenly say how to use the Look button. But I’m used to her voice nowadays - I always thought it funny how when learning the swim mechanics, you reach the surface and she says, “Ah! Air!” That always gets a chuckle out of me.

I watched your playthrough of that part again when I edited this, and I really love your crawlspace footage, because you don't have a flare lit, so it just shows a completely black monster walking around above you, which looked so much more creepy than my footage 😱 Haha, thank you for the confirmation regarding the spider cave! 😂

    Really look forward to these, they never disappoint :)
    TR3 really is the scariest, when I saw the first Shiva statue I didn't take my eyes off it and just inched along the wall staring at it, didn't help that the PS1's vertex wobbling made it look like Lara was trembling in fear as well.
    Then it turned out that the first one really WAS a statue... still scared me enough to avoid picking up the shotgun next to it.
    Would love to see a ranking of the endangered real-world species Lara has killed sometime, could get complicated when it comes to mythical beasts since so many are unique like Garuda etc

      The worst is knowing what the blood comes from. The FMV after the stage shows a ritual where the priest sacrifices himself and is squashed with a plate with spikes on bottom and Seth's armor on top.
      Unlike spikes and blood in gameplay the one in video is realistic, low light helps compensate for graphics at the time. And the sound... it was really unsettling even if it's the fourth time in a row they use the same plot device of final boss being someone who sacrificed themselves and transformed.

      This is a GREAT list! I had the "raptor room" from Crash Site in 11th and the "mutant room" from The Hive in 12th, so ;) I personally find the T-Rex encounters more exciting than scary, as I don't really feel fear when I face them. That's actually a little strange :P I'm afraid of an eel, but not a T-Rex.

    These games terrified me as an adolescent and I think the main reason is three-fold.
    Non-linear exploration; an absence of dialog/narrative and the low-poly graphics.
    The level that represents this the most for me as a child was The Opera House. I may have mentioned this before on another comment, but game systems didn't have the power to fully represent in detail complex realistic environments. They could only *suggest* them. Places such as caves were easy to evoke because they don't require much detail but an Opera House is incredibly ornate and Tomb Raider 2 does not accomplish the task of rendering it. So what you are left with is this odd space that doesn't feel real that is incredibly dark and confusing to navigate. The atmosphere made me feel ill and even today I struggle with that level. It feels dreamlike but its not meant to be. It's amazing

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  2 года назад

      I absolutely love this comment, and how you put this into words. I feel the exact same way, but had no idea how to describe it. This is something that old games actually benefit from, where the "accidental stylistic" graphics add something unique that games with photorealistic graphics can't really do.

      @@AxMania The modern Tomb Raiders (and unfortunately most triple A games in general) also Don't. Shut. Up.
      They are constantly feeling you either diagetic or internal dialog. Be it characters talking or the game just telling you how to play the game.
      If you counted the amount of dialog in the first Tomb Raider it would barely be enough for even the first 10 minutes of most modern big budget games.
      People don't like feeling alone, I get it. But damn it ruins the atmosphere

    Good list, rx tech mines definitely deserve no.1 spot. Other things that weren't mentioned:
    - tr3 piranhas. I was freaking scared of getting into water
    - tr3 temple ruins were downright terrifying, especially the living statues
    - tr3 dinosaurs, raptors in dark rooms gave me some jumpscares, but the t-rex takes the cake. That was my 1st t-rex encounter and I remembered staying crouched down perfectly still for several minutes hoping it couldn't see me

    This is a great video, as always. I think my top three scary moments are:
    1. RX Tech-Mines (especially that Jump Scare. I screamed very loud the first time)
    2. The freaking spider cave (Dark room, where giants spiders just fly in your face... Noooo)
    3. The Yeti room in TR2 (The noise they made with the darkness were too much for me)
    I rank it that way, because those were points, where I just stopped playing the game as a kid, because I was too damn scared to go on.
    I also wanna throw in Home sweet home from TR2. I was like "nice, I've beaten the game. Wait.. What the hell is going on? What am I supposed to do now? Okay, no I'll quit the game right here." It was really scary for me, because Laras Home was always my safespot. Nothing could happen you there and I've spend so much time there practicing for my first adventure. Seriously Croft Manor at night is pretty scary.

The retro Tomb Raider games had in common that they had a very dark vibe. And since as a child i was aspecting a fun action-adventure I was caught off guard by its sinister atmosphere. 2. Tomb raider 4 in the starting levels when you encounter the coffin that you have to lure the unkillable mummy out in order to access the tunnel behind it. First time encountering an unkillable enemy in a tomb raider game and it was scary!

    @lionocyborg6030 Год назад +1

    I can’t decide how to rank them but here are my top spots:
    *The corpses in the All Hallows’ sewer.* Their rotten rags as well as their skulls and claws make them look like dementors from Harry Potter. There’s the mutant versions in Lost Artefact too.
    *Sleeping with the Fishes and 40 Fathoms (mostly the former) being so deep underwater, that there is nothing but inky blackness above.* Lara can’t even try to surface in Sleeping with the Fishes as riptide currents carry her back to the sea caves under the channel tunnel, but at least there’s dolphins to cheer her up instead of TR2’s sharks.
    *The atmosphere of the catacombs of the talion and ice palace.* I had spooky dreams (not exactly nightmares, not exactly pleasant) about these caves as well as the RX Tech Mines except a lot darker and there were several avalanches and the falling icicles replaced with falling piles of snow. The yeti as well as dark crevasses before the gong don’t help.
    *3 occasions where Lara is nearly killed (or **_is_** killed) by deadly swimming pool drains.* In TR1, she is sucked down in the Neptune room but instead of being held against the drain’s cover, she is dumped in a tiny side room and she has to turn off the drain’s suction current before she drowns. In TR2, it’s an actual swimming pool in the barkhang monastery. The waterfall splashes on the surface above the drain’s grate from air bubbles escaping in the pipe are a bad sign. As soon as Lara enters the pool, the drain suction current tries to suck her down to the “safety” grill and hold her against it until she drowns, just like badly built pool drains in real life. She’s lucky she doesn’t get disembowelled.
    In TR3, the drain is in a satellite’s coolant vent tank in High Security Compound. Lara needs to close a valve in order to survive entering the sump or else she is sucked into the drain and shredded alive by the pump. The latter two of these, coupled with nightmares and real pool drain grates burning my feet as well as looking scary are why I hate pool drains with a passion. When I learned they really could kill and I accidentally guessed right the way how as a toddler in my mind, that didn’t help.
    *The atmosphere and design of all China levels sans Great Wall.* These levels evoke an irrational fear I had in my childhood that I’m not proud of, started by an episode of Rupert set in China, complete with creepy music stings, my introduction to dragons, deranged animation making a smaller dragon pull nightmare faces and the fires of Hell from the big one. TR2’s China levels remind me of that fear with similar textures to the emperor’s palace in the show, lots of deep lava and the origin of TR3’s Tinnos ambiance. The hellish look of the flowing lava in Floating Islands, the whole Xen look of that level and the jade warriors don’t help any. Bartoli in dragon form is tame by comparison.
    *The atmosphere, mutants and darkness of Antarctica.* Similar reason you gave except I also add Tinnos to that list with its mutant Polynesians who were left behind, and the wasps. The meteorite cavern seems to be located on the slopes of Mt Erebus, right next to the lava chamber.
    *Set being entombed in TR4.* His sarcophagus is not only an iron maiden but it’s also electrified. We even see him getting impaled by it in first person before it cuts to his blood draining out. The amulet stems the blood but removing it makes it flow again and flood some nearby pits. Lara can swim in Set’s blood too.
    *Arnaud being partially melted by Eckhardt’s glove in TR6.* The entire left side of his body looks like a waxwork was left too close to an open gas flame, left to twist and deform into a soup of elemental silver and other metals. Eckhardt may even have (according to Murti Schofield’s notes) have ripped out not just transmuted elements from his body but his thyroid gland too which he ate raw and pumping, before turning the rest of Arnaud’s body to silver to disguise his handiwork. The thing is we don’t know if Arnaud just survived or if Eckhardt let him live and suffer to serve as a warning to Bouchard.
    *Dr Kristina Boaz being fed to a spidery bio pod.* The “mouth” of this thing is sure to set off anyone with trypophobia, due to its mangled gills everywhere with barely any room to fit something as large as Boaz inside. The worst part is that it is not a mouth: it’s a vagina. The pod matures from its chrysalis stage into a sort of giant spider/scorpion hybrid, with Boaz still poking out of its labia during the boss fight, serving as the first weak point to aim for. She’s then quite literally reborn as a giant mosquito girl, and not the cute kind either. Needless to say, you have to fight her too.
    *The giant eel in Living Quarters*
    *The design of Atlantis in TRAE.* Unlike Crystal, Core Design really pulled out all the stops in their remake of TR1. Atlantis doubles down on the gore and fleshiness of the original, with decorative teeth lining the opening hatchery with huge nerves running through conduits above. The lava chute room requires Lara to climb inside a giant artery to exit. The main lava shaft now has a huge column held up by chains in the middle with lava falls coming in through cracks around the sides. The column is actually a giant brain stem, whose brain is just outside where the old scion room used to be. Now the scion is implied to go in the middle of a large platform on top of the brain, with computers hooked up to it as a sort of interface. It implies the scion is a biotech CD designed to decode and read the brain’s thoughts and vice versa. Then there’s the potential design of the biotech War Machine/Kyodai Natla Robo Natla would have piloted during the new final boss, as well as the gameplay description of its level in the design doc.

    Oooooh! I love the third part of Tomb Raider! I've been walking through it on my Sony playstation for almost a YEAR (when I was 15 y.o. in 2000-2001)! This game was my first playstation CD that I bought (without even having my own console yet!) in the hope that someday I will play it. The fact is that my parents were very disapproving of my spending money ("And why did you buy it? You'd better buy yourself something else!"). And, in order not to be scolded for "wrong spending", I had to hide the game.
    I hid this game from my parents for more than a year (!!!), until they finally bought me a console.
    And when you started talking about the scary moments of this game, I immediately remembered that mutated scientist and a big monster (but I remember the one in some dark cave. And the sound of his appearance was the same as in your case).
    Thank you for the great and interesting video!

      Hahaha, I love this story, thank you for sharing! 😃 I miss these times so much, where you just spent AGES on the same game, and it felt like the doors to a whole new world opened, when you finally did advance. Thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it!

    Tomb Raider might not be a horror game, but TR1 Atlantis is one of the scariest places from all PS1 games. I'm sorry, but Resident Evils and Silent Hills have nothing on meaty Atlantis. They have their scary stuff of course, but mansions and police stations are far more comfortable places to be in, than a room that looks like inside of someone's body 🤢
    The Giant Eel might be the worst TR enemy of all. Most people will remember bosses and rooms, but hardly anyone remembers that one eel. It scares me the same EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

      Haha, "meaty Atlantis", eww. I agree. That place is straight up nightmare fuel. The constant sound of a beating heart also adds to the disturbing atmosphere of that place.
      God, I hate that eel so much. I definitely remember it, and I don't think I'll ever forget it 😅 Unfortunately. I don't even like to do that part of the level now - as an adult!

    The eel is for me the worst. Every time I replay TR2, it freaks me out. The sound, the speed of the attack, the fact that it is so close to the camera and the look of the eel itself, all of it is terrifying. Sometimes I forget about it and the jump scare hit me hard, and sometimes I remember what awaits me and I don't really want to go in there...

      Haha, yes! It's like it's straight out of a nightmare. Everything about it is so disturbing!

    Very good and funny video. I agree with lots of picks here. I will also add an aquaduct in Rome and crazy Sphinx level from first Tomb Raider

      Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Yes, they are great examples as well. Especially with the mutants that rush down the stairs in the Sphinx level!
